This makes me grind my teeth every time I see it.

It's irritating but not nearly as much as people starting their posts with "So".

TheRealAmandaClarke · 19/03/2015 21:10

Yabu
I genuinely cant get my head around the claims of outrage about grammatical errors.
Its entirely possibe to read and comprehend a piece of text with about a third of the letters missing. So the odd spelling mistake doesn't actually pose a problem.
I think it's a faux concern tbh and serves only to help the linguistically outraged to feel undeservedly superior about their language skills.

AlPacinosHooHaa · 19/03/2015 21:13

please tell me which means what. genuninly dont now

AlPacinosHooHaa · 19/03/2015 21:14

Yes agree amanda, i can understand why they feel irritated by it, as they were taught and it matters to them but its not end of the world. and yes its an opportunity to feel superior.

dexra I suggest you avoid the "mistakes at work" thread over in chat...

derxa · 19/03/2015 23:06

I'll go there now!

You are not unreasonable. I hate it myself.

stqueen · 19/03/2015 23:12

"I should OF known" instead of "I should HAVE known" - makes me loose lose the plot every time that one.

Flame me if you so desire but a lot of common culprits doing this & all the other grammar gaffes mentioned (there, their, they're/affected, effected) are. . . .TEACHERS!

missusdaly · 19/03/2015 23:17

YDNBU They're different words that sound different, are spelt differently and have different meanings! You might as well go ahead and mix up the word 'cactus' with the word 'giraffe'.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 20/03/2015 06:07

But they're just spelling mistakes.
In the context of a sentence its not confusing.
Its not reasonable to be angeredby it. Its a bit boring really.
"Oh I simply can't bear to see were instead of we're. It makes my teeth itch"
Do calm down, really.

derxa · 20/03/2015 06:19

It is boring but annoying.

It enraged me when I saw it in a very high level operations design document yesterday.

And it annoys me elsewhere. It's like only in the past few years people have stopped being able to spell.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 20/03/2015 07:54

I think its bcause we view so many written words now.
And they are in lieu of speaking. So on a chat forum or fb people write as they talk. Its not submitted as a piece of written work might be.
And previously, before mass social media, these conversations would be had orally. there were fewer opportunities to observe someone's spelling.
Writing was confined to more formal situations. Fewer people wrote things down for others to read.

derxa · 20/03/2015 08:31

Spellchecker has a lot to answer for. Many online newspaper articles have mistakes as described above.
