To worry about the Tory plans after this budget

bobbywash · 18/03/2015 15:10

and I accept the election may derail all of this but.....

The chancellor has said an additional 30bn worth of cuts needs to be made in the next parliament for their figures to work.

Now bearing in mind the ring fenced NHS budget and the (wavering) commitment to the education budget and pensions. Where the heck are an additional 30bn of cuts going to come from.

Is there anything left to cut

Needasilverlining Iona doesn't care about statistics, she's seen some people and therefore knows it to be true for millions.
Please kindly point to my post where I said I knew it was true for millions.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 18/03/2015 17:32

IonaNE Ah, so the answer is no, you can't actually provide any evidence for your claims. BTW, did I mention I regularly snog Johnny Depp?

IonaNE · 18/03/2015 17:34

Beyond Ah baddz, youre supposed to move, remember. The job centre will front you the removal fees and help with changing rentals, dontchaknow...
Yep. just like it did for all the immigrants, who, from much poorer countries, managed to come to Britain with children, no/little English, no/little recongnised qualifications - and still managed to get jobs (and I'm talking about legal, minimum-wage, above-the-board jobs) somehow. I bet the Lithuanian and Polish etc. "job centres" all funded these families' moves... but since the British Job Centre does not, it is unreasonable to expect someone from Scunthorpe to move anywhere.

Baddz · 18/03/2015 17:34

Sigh.
The same old trite prejudices trotted out by the same types.
I am glad that our taxes go to help these families. Without benefits these children would have even fewer chances in life, and would probably go hungry.
How can we call ourselves a civilised society when we do not care for those who cannot care for themselves?
This govt have done a very good job in demonising the poor, the young, the unemployed and he disabled.
Whilst giving massive tax breaks to their rich friends.
Truly sickening.

D0oinMeCleanin · 18/03/2015 17:37

Beyond, if you don't know a single person who's never had a job, your estate does not even come close to the ones in the North East of England

I'm in the NE. I have quite a few friends who used to live on one of the worst estates in a not so great to begin with town, many still do live there.

All of these friends now work or have worked in the past and are looking for work, bar those who sadly died due to drug over doses. None of them have several generations who have never worked. They may have several generations of drug and alcohol abuse, or criminal behaviour, or teen pregnancy etc. but every single one of those families have someone in their household who either is working or has worked in the past and is looking for work currently.

The only person I know who makes benefits a choice, is from a hardworking, middle class family. Dad was an engineer, mum a registered nurse. She is an unemployed, single parent and wouldn't know work if it hit her in the face, she is however a great mum and I would fully expect her child to do well for herself.

Littlemonstersrule · 18/03/2015 17:38

They have done some great work and I hope they get back in. We are getting back on track.

They could get rid of the universal free school meals and child benefit as that would be a great saving. Benefits should always be relooked at and there are still plenty more cuts that could be made from them.

I don't get the gripe about carers allowance, it's not lower if the person is related to you. Caring for family members is done by many many people, some claim benefits some don't. There's no scope for a salary to be paid as its not a job so it's just paid at a little less than JSA as DLA and tax credits are also paid to heavily increase the amount.

IonaNE · 18/03/2015 17:38

Saskia Ah, so the answer is no,.
The answer was "yes". Read my post again and follow the instructions please, if interested. Since the only "evidence" for you would be some personal experience; and because I cannot legally allow you access to the documents I had access to, your only bet is to find one of the jobs I listed, for yourself. Are you a registered social worker? Do you hold QTS?

P.S.: Johnny Depp is your problem, sorry, can't help you with that.

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 18/03/2015 17:38

In my many hr job roles, i'd rather hire someone who had little english than a bigot.

Unrelated, i saw on another thread that you are currently unemployed, iona?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 18/03/2015 17:40

iona

Because if you did pass the info on you would finally end up with something evidence based to use on threads like this.

Instead of just talking bollocks

IonaNE · 18/03/2015 17:40

They have done some great work and I hope they get back in. We are getting back on track.
This ^.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 18/03/2015 17:41

And yep worked in the social care sector for about 2 decades

IonaNE · 18/03/2015 17:41

NeedsAsockamnesty, goading me to break the law?

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 18/03/2015 17:43

Little, the "gripe" is that my husband has to help me in the shower and prep all of my food. Does yours? If the council sent round a carer, they would get min wage for it. Why is it a paid job for a stranger, yet a duty for a partner?

My dh doesnt even get carers allowance as it would take money away from my esa.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 18/03/2015 17:43

No dear just pointing out that if the DWP don't have the figures then you should probably stop insisting they do

GibberingFlapdoodle · 18/03/2015 17:46

The Institute of Fiscal Studies also said that the tory plans for cuts would 'substantially alter the relationship between the individual and the state'. I'm with baddz, it's all going to hell in a handbasket.

As for all these welfare people who need to get jobs, where are all the jobs Iona? There are fewer jobs available than there are people on benefit, the figures are in the ONS. And of course the number who actually want work is larger than the people on record, lots of people are now fallng off the system just to avoid all the shit associated with it. And also of course all the jobs that are available only need to provide 1 hr employment a week to be so counted.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 18/03/2015 17:46

IonaNE You don't need to access any confidential documents, there is quite a lot of publicly available data about this subject. Here's a list:

scholar.google.co.uk/scholar?q=the+myth+of+the+intergenerational+workless+household&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart&sa=X&ei=t6gJVd20McvcPfetgPgG&ved=0CB4QgQMwAA

And no, I'm not a social worker and I hope to God that you aren't either.

Coco0123 · 18/03/2015 17:46

I am very worried about what cuts will be made. I am very reliant on even the child benefit at the moment, I would struggle losing that.

I think free school lunches for all infants should be scrapped. Why should those who can very easily afford it get it free, doesn't make sense. Should be means tested as it always was. Plus, in our area at least the quality has been seriously compromised since it started....

muminhants · 18/03/2015 17:47

They've made all these cuts and the deficit is even larger than it was when Labour got in. So they've caused misery and for what?

I don't know who I want to win. I've said it before and I'd like to see a government led by the likes of Gisela Stuart, Sarah Wollaston and Caroline Lucas. I'm sure they'd do a better job than Ed/Dave.

I'm more Labour-leaning but Dave comes over as more competent than Ed does. But I don't want a referendum of leaving the EU and I don't want more libraries closed and I don't want a return to the 1930s with the poor doffing their caps to the rich.

What I do find disappointing is how wet the Libdems have been. Yes they've done some good stuff and probably reigned in the worst of the Tory excesses but given they've been propping the Tories up they could have been a lot more bolshy and made them do more progressive things. I'm not a Nick-hater but he has been wet.

muminhants · 18/03/2015 17:47

Sorry the deficit is even larger than it was when Labour left power! Bigger than in 2010 I meant.

irretating · 18/03/2015 17:48

And.... why exactly would I do this? Why is it important for me that the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a leftist .... [insert your own] should know anything?

For the pursuit of truth. It would show the JRF's research was faulty.

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 17:49

Super budget, I'm very happy with what they have acheived so far and after today I'm even more confident that they will be returned to power to continue the excellent job!
Dawn - caring for one's children and husband is what we do , no? You get carer's allowance which I believe is absolutely right but it isnt a job so can't be linked to minimum wage. I'm not sure where the idea came from that the state ( i.e teh taxpayer) should be repsonsible rather than the family?

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 17:50

I am very worried about what cuts will be made. I am very reliant on even the child benefit at the moment, I would struggle losing that.

Where did the budget say anything about scrapping CB?

Coco0123 · 18/03/2015 17:52

armchair it didn't say in the budget that child benefit was being cut, just a poster up thread was musing what cuts could possibly be made next & suggested cb.

GibberingFlapdoodle · 18/03/2015 17:52

Yes the deficit has grown. Oddly there was also that report from the oecd showing that economic redistribution, in the form of welfare etc, actually increased economic performance of a country as a whole, and how bad inequality is for economic growth. www.oecd.org/els/soc/Focus-Inequality-and-Growth-2014.pdf

We all already know it's bad for individuals, and bad for society as a whole to be so unequal (try The Spirit Level). The UK is one of the richest countries in the world, there are far poorer countries that are more equal than we are. We can afford to help our disadvantaged.

Armchairathlete · 18/03/2015 17:54

Sorry the deficit is even larger than it was when Labour left power! Bigger than in 2010 I meant.

Erm. No. It's shrunk considerably from £153 bn to 90Bn.
