Just went to my local cooperative store as I needed a lemon for a dish I was cooking. I take said lemon to the till with a few other items which the checkout assistant begins scanning.

She gets to the lemon and, I shit you not, says to me, "What is this?" I didn't know whether to Grin or Shock but I managed to utter, "Lemon, it's a lemon!"

As I also bought a bottle of wine on a school night! I know that she must have been at least 18!

So, MN, AIBU? Are lemons some exotic rarity that most people have not been exposed to?!

Was it one of those lemons that is quite round like an orange?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/03/2015 20:27

Yellow thing, goes in gin? She's clearly not a MNer Grin

weeblueberry · 16/03/2015 20:27

Was it a bit green? Maybe she was clarifying whether it was a lemon or lime?

also clutching at straws

Ynbu, every adult should recognise a lemon

Nolim · 16/03/2015 20:30

Maybe english wasnt her first language?

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 16/03/2015 20:30

No no no. It's lime for gin, lemon for vodka.

Tsk, what is the world coming to.

Bunnyjo · 16/03/2015 20:33

This was the lemon in question.

Lemon for gin?

WHAT???!!

Smidge001 · 16/03/2015 20:36

slattern No no no... I'm sure standard drinks are:
(a) 'vodka, lime and soda'
And
(b) 'Gin and bitter lemon' (which personally I can't stand)

But I am getting these from (a) time spent in Aus, and (b) memories of my grandma so both could be slightly skewed Grin

thatstoast · 16/03/2015 20:36

Oh my god, this happened to me but I was the checkout assistant. Let me qualify it by saying that most people who came through the till were horrible people and woe betide you if you charged them an extra 2p for a lime rather than a lemon. So one day, I held up an odd looking lime and asked the customer what it was. The answer came from her small daughter, "It's a lime, isn't it mummy!". She was very proud of her citrus based knowledge and I felt like a right idiot.

SaucyJack · 16/03/2015 20:37

I never have, never do and never shall refer to the bloody co-op as "the co-operative" so for that alone YABU.

Go to Waitrose if you wanna ponce about buying fancy fruit.

Bunnyjo · 16/03/2015 20:39

Clearly my photo adding skills are on a par with her citrus fruit skills. This is the lemon in question...

Still can't see the lemon.

I'm beginning to see why the cashier was so confused! Grin

Argh, I cannot add photos! But the lemon was very yellow and very lemony looking and the checkout assistant was English too

Well the problem with the lemon is its invisible. No wonder the poor girl had to check.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 16/03/2015 20:43

I'm sorry Smidge but you are clearly wrong Wink.

Vodka should only be drunk with either tonic or (d)coke and a slice of lemon.

Gin with lime, unless it's Hendricks when only cucumber is acceptable.

Bitter lemon is only drunk by those over the age of 70 - in other words, my mother/ your grandmother.

Smidge001 · 16/03/2015 20:44

I posted a photo too and it hasn't appeared either. It was proof of gin and bitter lemon. Pah. Now no one will believe me.

Could this be a new checkout game? I was asked what an avacado was last week. Anyone in retail? Is this an obscure wind up the customer game?

Lime in vodka. Most definitely.
Lemon in lemon meringue pie.

Smidge001 · 16/03/2015 20:46

slattern you might be right with the age range for bitter lemon actually!

But vodka lime and soda is great. You should try it on a hot sunny day (hmm maybe that's why it works so well in Australia....)

flora717 · 16/03/2015 20:46

Bitter lemon and gin is quite nice imho. Quite honestly any piece of citrus fruit in my gin will convince me I am drinking for enjoyment rather than end of week desperation Shock

does anyone remember the dave gormnan thing about the lemon/lime and the take away sign?
