Just went to my local cooperative store as I needed a lemon for a dish I was cooking. I take said lemon to the till with a few other items which the checkout assistant begins scanning.

She gets to the lemon and, I shit you not, says to me, "What is this?" I didn't know whether to Grin or Shock but I managed to utter, "Lemon, it's a lemon!"

As I also bought a bottle of wine on a school night! I know that she must have been at least 18!

So, MN, AIBU? Are lemons some exotic rarity that most people have not been exposed to?!

I want to say "or a nice gentleman"...

Trills · 16/03/2015 21:21

Frozen lime won't flavour your gin until it melts though...

Bunnyjo · 16/03/2015 21:21

And I have may have just sliced the second half of the lemon and placed in the freezer, as per Slattern's suggestion...

Would it be wrong to text DH and ask tell him to get a good bottle of gin and some naice tonic water on his way home?

I got half a bloody cucumber in my Hendricks the other day.

Not nice. One slice maybe (but I prefer lime, or lemon really), but I could have made a salad.

MaidOfStars · 16/03/2015 21:32

Gin with lime, unless it's Hendricks when only cucumber is acceptable

Some gins take apple.

Atnelpoe · 16/03/2015 21:39

Vodka and grapefruit, now that's where it's at...mmm mmmm

Gunpowder · 16/03/2015 21:40

I used to drink gin and bitter lemon underage so I wouldn't get ID-ed. ALWAYS WORKED! They obvs thought I was a 70 year old called Edna. Everyone who asked for Malibu coke got busted.

Bunnyjo · 16/03/2015 21:42

Which ones, Maid? I like a good gin and tonic and I love Hendricks with cucumber, but have never thought of using apple with any and will be trying it this weekend

Gin with Apple. What madness is this?

But I must admit to being a little intrigued. Please do tell me more.

Grapefruit is the work of the devil and should not be allowed to sully the wonderfulness of vodka.

Atnelpoe · 16/03/2015 21:47

Ah you see Slattern I used to think Grapefruit was the work of the devil too, in fact I still don't like it on it's own, but I mixed it with Vodka once by mistake lush, me? Never and damn does it taste good. Try it!

emwithme · 16/03/2015 21:47

You can also use naked lemons. A friend of mine makes lovely lemon drizzle cake but it needs the juice of 2 lemons and the zest of 4; so she de-zests the lemons and then gives them to me, and I chop them into quarters, wrap them in greaseproof paper and freeze them and then drop them into alcoholic stuff.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 16/03/2015 21:54

Atnelpoe I'm not sure I could get over my aversion of grapefruit, however in the interests of research I will give it a try. The things I do for MN.

I'm glad to see the extent of recycling of fruit. MNers truly are conscientious and hate waste. Wink.

Atnelpoe · 16/03/2015 21:58

Now I just want Vodka, mmm, lovely gloopy freezer vodka...

GinAndSonic · 16/03/2015 22:01

You can freeze them you say?

Moln · 16/03/2015 22:04

I'm having a G&T right now. It's my second and all.

Will I reveal which fruit is within the gin?

MaidOfStars · 16/03/2015 22:04

Caorunn

MaidOfStars · 16/03/2015 22:06

Williams Chase

Moln · 16/03/2015 22:06

Btw was the COOP lady very small? Maybe she thought the lemon was a melon with pointy bits?

Bunnyjo · 16/03/2015 22:09

Moln, if you are the checkout operator I recently encountered you may not be able to!

Maid, thank you!

Bunnyjo · 16/03/2015 22:11

Moln, she was taller than me. However, I am barely 5' 3" so am hardly Amazonian in stature!

Moln · 16/03/2015 22:18

Hmmm. Very mysterious, if she wasn't super tiny and mistook a lemon for a melon then what could be possibly have thought it was.

Grantaire · 16/03/2015 22:18

My friend swears by gin and elderflower.

ARoomWithoutAView · 16/03/2015 22:20

Gin and elderflower is very good.

I don't like gin.
Elderflower is too sugary sickly.
But together they are a great couple.

SayraT · 16/03/2015 22:23

I realise that this wasn't the case with your checkout person but when staying in Brazil with a Brazilian friend, an Italian friend and my OH (Scottish) we walked past a lime tree and Brazilian friend said something about lemons.

It turns out that in Brazil a lime (green) is a lemon (yellow) and a lemon is a lime.

OH, Italian friend and I all said that a lemon was yellow and a lime was green but Brazilian friend (and other Brazilians) insisted that we were wrong and a lime was yellow.

Bunnyjo · 16/03/2015 22:24

Maybe she is used to only serving Mnetters and was utterly confused by this weird yellow looking thing that was not accompanied by a bottle of gin.

Yep, that's it. I've answered my own AIBU Grin
