To think celebrities that get cosmetic surgery are treated unfairly

Whenever a celebrity gets plastic surgery and they are mentioned on mumsnet (or other media) they are automatically put down. If it is a celeb who has done work they are called "fake" "frozen" and numerous over insulting terms. Why do we put celebs who have plastic surgery down so much. Relates to the Nicole Kidman thread.

because some of us feel angered that the patriarchy society prefers people to fit an ideal of how they should look, not accept how they actually look

QueenOfSouthLondon · 16/03/2015 17:49

But If someone choses to fit the ideal that is there choice and they do not deserve to get mocked because of that choice

Plastic surgery is fake.

It annoys me that these people are held up to be Helens of Troy, when they wouldn't actually look that much different from some girl who works in Boots without all the surgery, make up and airbrushing.

Theknacktoflying · 16/03/2015 17:51

I think the unfairness only comes in, when they accept £££££ from beauty contracts and then proceed to deny any work or correction.

QueenOfSouthLondon · 16/03/2015 17:52

Saucyjack it may be fake but I don't understand why it is brought up every time a celebrity is mentioned.

Floisme · 16/03/2015 17:55

They're entitled to do whatever they want but until they drop this absurd pretense that it's all down to good genes and a touch of cold cream then I don't think they can complain when people point and laugh.

notsolovely · 16/03/2015 17:56

Sometimes I think its unfair other times is completely fair. If you want to look a certain way fair enough. If you are going to sell products based on it without admitting to surgery, I think its wrong. I also think its wrong when they spout advice or give the 'its how my make was done' excuse. When its clearly surgery and no amount of shading will produce the same results. Also alot of them are fake or frozen, so its not an insult its factual.

QueenOfSouthLondon · 16/03/2015 17:56

Floisme but Everytime they are mentioned is not fair

OP posts:
notsolovely · 16/03/2015 17:57

Its surely no different to airbrushing in magazines that everybody objects to?

QueenOfSouthLondon · 16/03/2015 17:57

Notssolovely why should they be forced to admit to things in their private lives

OP posts:
notsolovely · 16/03/2015 17:59

Its not everytime. They are mentioned thousands of times per day. It may be mentioned alot. But not everytime. I had my boobs reduces and lifted. I get compliments from female friends alot as I breastfed but still have perky boobs. I don't tell them its the cream I use and encourage them to buy it. I tell them its because I had them done.

notsolovely · 16/03/2015 18:00

Because most of them are trying to sell something, even if its just their image of perfection. They are selling a lie. If you sold a car based on lies, you would get taken to court.

QueenOfSouthLondon · 16/03/2015 18:01

But to be fair you are not a celebrity so it's not the same If you know what I mean. I think it is a choice to reveal or not either way I don't think its fair to constantly crotise their choice.

OP posts:
Theknacktoflying · 16/03/2015 18:02

Because they accept £££££ on false pretences .... Their lives are not private, but rather another well packaged and unrealistic way of making more dosh

SaucyJack · 16/03/2015 18:03

Why does it bother you anyway Queen? Genuine question.

wearing · 16/03/2015 18:04

Not the case. Celebs who've had crap (ie obvious) plastic surgery get put down.

ALL celebs (pretty much) have had surgery. The ones who don't get called frozen are the ones who've had a decent job done.

scousadelic · 16/03/2015 18:04

The airbrushing is done by somebody else though so, technically, not their responsibility.

I'm quite happy for anyone to have whatever plastic surgery they choose but, if they then choose to make out that this is normal and the rest of us are failing in our attempts to look nice then they deserve the backlash

It's rather like a celeb with obvious hair extensions advertising thickening shampoo and expecting us to be stupid enough to fall for it and not point out the fakeness

Binkybix · 16/03/2015 18:05

Because they perpetrate a perception of what people think humans should look like, which I believe is damaging. So IMO it's fair game.

notsolovely · 16/03/2015 18:06

How do you know I am not? Lol No you right I am not. However its the same thing. I don't tell other women who feel a bit down their boobs don't look as perky as mine that its genes or a product I spread on them. I don't tell them if they buy this they will get boobs like mine. That's what celebs do. They are used to sell products because alot of women and girls want their level of perfection, which is not achieved with creams and make up.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/03/2015 18:06

They are being paid to advert a product in a way that often carries the implication that, if you use the product - you too could look like this. So, if their "flawless" look is actually due to plastic surgery rather than the product in question I think people have a right to question their appearence.

Floisme · 16/03/2015 18:09

I wouldn't have a go at Sharon Osbourne for example because she's upfront about it (I might not care for how it looks but I think that's another matter). But when they not only lie about it but take money to promote 'miracle creams' that actually do bugger all ... well why shouldn't people take the piss?

notsolovely · 16/03/2015 18:10

In fact its worse if a celeb does it than me. As they are reaching millions of people and profiting out of it. If I told my friends to get to Holland and Barrett and buy coconut oil (which is what I do use) I wouldn't make any money out of it. Celebs are making millions based on a lie.

MaryWestmacott · 16/03/2015 18:12

Not all celebrities go for the obviously frozen and fake look -Sandra Bullock is one who springs to mind of 'has had some work, and has it done well".

but there's also the fact it's very unfair that woman are judged not just on their general beauty, but in relation to looking young and not haivng "let themself go" - which normally means "10 years have passed, they look 10 years older". Youth is valued so highly in female beauty, that female celebrities do have to have work done to avoid being judged as 'past it'. Until they get to around 60, when they can stop and start accepting 'older woman' roles, there are very few roles where they are happy to cast a 40-something woman that looks like a 40-something woman. In hollywood, successful female actors are a 'kooky' or 'sexy' teen, then a gorgeous 20-something, then a glamorous 30-something then hold until 60, then you are 'grand dame'. Middle age doesn't happen, there are roles, but faces can't look like they are 40 or 50.

Woman who get the 'hold' thing right are rewarded and called beautiful, woman who get it a bit wrong or are too obvious with what they are doing, are slated, but we still don't demand to see 'real' looking faces, just ones that have better surgons.

sebsmummy1 · 16/03/2015 18:14

Because we are sick of being perceived as thick as shit because we are Muggles and they are other worldy brings who are naturally blessed with fabulous genes and a fast metabolism. We have eyes in our head, we can see (for example) that Kyle Jenner used to have thin lips and now she has thick lips and it is not lipstick or clever use of lip liner. That Rene Zelwegger used to have hooded eyes and how she has a slightly startled look and it is not clever lighting or skin cream, that Nicole Kidman used to look like a normal being and now she looks like someone pulled her face up about three inches and her eyebrows are now up where her harline used to be. They can deny deny deny but there original face is on bloody film twenty years ago!! I find it extremely rude and it pisses me off.
