To think celebrities that get cosmetic surgery are treated unfairly

Whenever a celebrity gets plastic surgery and they are mentioned on mumsnet (or other media) they are automatically put down. If it is a celeb who has done work they are called "fake" "frozen" and numerous over insulting terms. Why do we put celebs who have plastic surgery down so much. Relates to the Nicole Kidman thread.

Why does being famous make them above criticism? So what if they choose to ruin their faces, if they make themselves ridiculous they will be mocked. Fair dos.

QueenOfSouthLondon · 16/03/2015 18:29

It doesn't make them above Criticism but it is not fair to mention their plastic surgery on unrelated things eg advert that has Nicole Kidman in what has that got to do with her surgeries

I think anyone who is that dissatisfied with the way they look that they are prepared to undergo potentially risky and painful surgery should be treated with compassion. Someone who spends a lot of time in the public eye will be subject to a significant amount of scrutiny by the media, spiteful comments from everyone from keyboard warriors to international critics, and attempts to take photographs of them which are as unflattering as possible. The fact that they choose to minimise the impact on their self esteem though surgery is a symptom of society's problems with the way women look, not a cause of it IMO.

VenusRising · 16/03/2015 18:34

Queen, they have altered their appearance for money. For them then to say "buy this product and you'll look as good as I do" is dishonest.

It's not a private choice, it's a public persona, and they profit from it.

Also they look ridiculous and deserve the guffaws they get.

notsolovely · 16/03/2015 18:35

I haven't seen the advert so can't comment on her looks however, why do you think she was picked? Because of her incredible acting skills? No because she has a certain image, the image is created to make women look at her and want to be like her, which is impossible because its all fake.

AgentCooper · 16/03/2015 18:40

I agree, DoJo. I feel sorry for people who are obviously so worried about their looks that they're willing to undergo invasive surgery. You can see why they feel that way - it must be rotten to have everyone and their dog mocking you for having wrinkles or a jawline that's no longer as tight as it was when you were 18 on the internet.

It's especially sad when it makes characterful faces look nothing like they did. Those inflated cheeks on Madonnas, Courteney Cox, Chelsea Handler - there's something so strange about them. They look like Brazilian waxes.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/03/2015 18:58

The ones who get put down for it are 100% the ones who have either overdone it or had too much done.

Nicole Kidman is an easy example of a very famous woman who has over done the Botox.

Keira Knightley had collagen in her lips about a decade ago - God knows why, she didn't have thin lips anyway, they looked ridiculous. She's certainly learnt the art of less is more if she's continued having them done.

That old bloke from 9 1/2 weeks is another one who has ruined his face.

It beggars belief that these people expect the general public to feign blindness.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/03/2015 19:00

Nicole Kidmans surgery gets mentioned regarding everything she does because her face doesn't move. A problem, as she's an actress, not a waxwork.

mumofthemonsters808 · 16/03/2015 19:00

What I object to is the normalisation of youthfulness, a middle aged woman is now expected to look half her age, have the same body that she had pre children, dress upbeat and trendy, have perfect teeth. Yet we do not have these unrealistic expectations for men who seem to be allowed to age gracefully. I bet Robert Redford never had his wrinkles airbrushed because these lines added to his appeal not hindered it, unfortunately this does not seem to apply to females. Im probably just bitter about this issue because my DD said she could not believe Jenifer Lopez was my age, cue a lecture from me about real women and how all the money in the world can not change the age of our internal organs.

Frances Bean Cobain is another one who looks completely unrecognisable from two years ago.

Weirdly, she was born with her dad's face but is now morphing into a more hygienic looking version of her mum.
