To eat a chorizo at 37 weeks pregnant

I am really craving chorizo. You're not meant to eat uncooked meats while pregnant, but I am 37 weeks now and do you think it would be that bad?

I have a particular chorizo in mind from an upmarket shop near me. You're meant to cut it into pieces to have at the start of a dinner party I think but I would eat the whole sausage myself.

I think chorizo is fine. It's not on the NHS list of foods you should stay away from IIRC.

rosepetalsoup · 16/03/2015 10:28

It is uncooked though.

i would eat it too.

Do you mean the cured meat? Or the uncooked chorizo which you cook like you would sausages?

DorotheaHomeAlone · 16/03/2015 10:28

I also think chorizo is fine but if you're very anxious you could always cook it first. It's bloody delicious fried.

weeblueberry · 16/03/2015 10:29

It's cured so fine in all liklihood. And it's friggen gorgeous so go for it. If you're really worried then just fry it :)

rosepetalsoup · 16/03/2015 10:29

Yeah, cured meat.

X posted with you there OP.

Cariad007 · 16/03/2015 10:29

Good point. I think there's no problem with the cured meat. And nobody, pregnant or not, would eat the sausage type without cooking it first!

OhMjh · 16/03/2015 10:30

Eat it. Cook it by frying if that'd make you feel a little better but I really wouldn't worry about it. I too craved chorizo when pregnant and didn't realise it was on the 'naughty list'; I think I must have gone through a ring a week for 4 months - DD is 15 weeks old and absolutely perfect.

rosepetalsoup · 16/03/2015 10:30

This kind of thing

Ooops tried to post a pic but it didn't work. Anyway the one that's like a spicy salami. I need a whole one to myself and I need it today! Too ashamed to call NHS direct.

Really? Not even a sneaky bit before cooking it?

Erm no, of course I don't. Blush

rosepetalsoup · 16/03/2015 10:32

Ah that's a relief OhMjh!

Why don't you just look up what the official NHS guidance says? Or fry it!

Skeppers · 16/03/2015 10:32

I've been eating a shit tonne of the stuff. Admittedly cooked, but I've been scoffing a good few wodges whilst in the process of cooking...just for quality assurance purposes...! Wink

I wouldn't eat the specifically labelled 'cooking chorizo' raw- at any time, not just during pregnancy- but the properly cured stuff you get from a deli counter? Tuck in!

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 16/03/2015 10:33

So I can eat chrorizo in early pregnancy as well? I've been mission my chroizo and smokey bacon pasta (about the only thing I can actually cook).

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 16/03/2015 10:34

Missing not mission Hmm.

rosepetalsoup · 16/03/2015 10:34

I have looked it up, it says

'Be cautious with cold cured meats in pregnancy

Many cold meats, such as salami, Parma ham, chorizo and pepperoni, are not cooked, they are just cured and fermented.'

I ate chorizo through my 3 pregnancies and didn't even realise it was on a banned list!

quesadillas · 16/03/2015 10:46

I ate loads of cured meat last time, but only pre-packaged rather than the really lovely stuff from the market, as I wasn't sure how long the exposed edge had been exposed for on a market stall. I was diabetic, it was one of the few pleasures in my diet!

cryMeASliverOfPie · 16/03/2015 10:54

Nothing was on the banned list when I was pregnant... Except shell fish and pate because bluerghhhh. I definitely ate cured meats and bleu steaks...yum.

I don't think the UK guidelines are strict on cured meats anyway, that's more of a USA thing and I've read that because the quality is less good over there.

rosepetalsoup · 16/03/2015 10:56

Ok, thanks everyone. I will be acquiring a top-notch chorizo this afternoon!!

OP posts:
obeliaboo · 16/03/2015 10:57

Unless stated otherwise on the packet, you are supposed to cook chorizo anyway....peel the skin, and cook. Cured meats, avoid (although i did sneak in some serrano and proscuitto) but chorizo is fine, it should say on the packet if its ready to eat but generally, its raw sausage and not a cured meat so it has to be cooked. (brother's a chef, i have been harrased as you may tell).

rosepetalsoup · 16/03/2015 10:59

No - I know the one I want to eat is cured.

obeliaboo · 16/03/2015 11:39

Then give it a little quick dry flash fry and tuck in! Wont hurt you one bit :) nomnomnom
