To think supermarket food is better than takeaways?

Whenever I've had a takeaway I tend to find it ok but a bit disappointing, especially considering the price. However for a lot less money I can buy a really nice 'takeaway style' meal from the likes of Waitrose or M&S, it only takes a few minutes to heat in the microwave /oven, is always hot, hopefully the meat is decent quality (I'm always dubious about the quality of takeaway meat) and tastes great.

I particularly rate Waitrose curries and their pizza is brilliant. The exception would be fish and chips which tastes best fresh at a seaside takeaway Grin anyone agree?

Agree with the marks and spencer takeaway style meals they are lovely. But sometimes you just want a nice dominos or a nice curry. But I can definitely see your point

MrsBertMacklin · 15/03/2015 17:56

Agree. Waitrose 'Menu' pizzas and their curry ranges are great (and their curries are quite low in calories.

Also like the Tesco Finest curry range, the jalfrezi is lovely.

The only exceptions for me are Thai (supermarkets never put enough oomph in them) and fish and chips.

PickleSarnie · 15/03/2015 17:56

Definitely agree. I always feel a bit grubby and used after a takeaway. So if we ever don't feel like cooking we go for a waitrose curry.

Aridane · 15/03/2015 17:57

No - no supermarket beats my local Chinese, or the amazing ultra thin crust of the pizzaria. Sounds like you need better takeaways.

trixymalixy · 15/03/2015 17:58

No I totally disagree, supermarket ready meals are nowhere near as nice as my local Chinese and Indian takeaway's food. I've always wondered who buys those horrid cardboard things they sell as nan bread in the supermarket.

usualsuspect333 · 15/03/2015 17:58

Nah, I don't have to cook takeaways.

FuckItBucket · 15/03/2015 17:58

Never had a supermarket madras that tastes better than a takeaways

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2015 17:58

It depends on the takeaway really.

We're surrounded by them here. Some are god awful but a few do gorgeous food.

I've not tried the M&S/Waitrose takeaway style food though. Maybe I'll give it a whirl next weekend.

FuckItBucket · 15/03/2015 18:00

Trix and they are smaller than takeaway naans. My local one does a huge thing, as big or bigger than the plate.

Mrsderekshepard · 15/03/2015 18:01

Supermarket take away is vile, the pizzas where u choose your toppings are nice but the Chinese and curry are a big no no, you've obviously never experienced good food.

RatOnnaStick · 15/03/2015 18:01

I've never found an oven pizza that does a takeaway one justice. My oven just dries and burns them. I'm quite happy to eat supermarket chinese bits but I always find there's more sauce and less meat in the tesco curries and I prefer my local indian. (even though its a 30 mile round-trip)

sosix · 15/03/2015 18:03

Our local Indian is amazing, sm doesn't compare. Chip shop is rubbish though... Would rather have oven chips.

TheChandler · 15/03/2015 18:06

Is it really worth debating the difference? Surely they're all full of additives, artificial flavouring and added sugar and fat which are addictive, so whichever one you eat the most of, you will have "trained" your tastes to prefer?

FuckItBucket · 15/03/2015 18:11

Always someone to ruin a perfect meal with words like additives and fat Grin

Takeaways are just better in general. It's an actual fact.

Well should be

mousmous · 15/03/2015 18:14

well for a start supermarkets label the ingredients.
discussions on the phone with a person who doesn't know what they put in their food isn't fun...

Instituteofstudies · 15/03/2015 18:36

There are masses of takeaways our way and everyone I've tried has been so salty I could barely eat it. I don't mind Pizza Express pizzas from the supermarket but the takeaway type stuff in general available in supermarkets, i've not been impressed with either. I'd rather go out for a lovely meal less often than spend my money on disappointing salt-fests.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 15/03/2015 18:39

We have some smashing takeaways locally.

Morrisons fresh pizzas are better than their frozen ones. The cheese melts just lovely and they are really nice. Never tried a curry so can't comment.

I was thinking earlier I could just eat a big fat greasy kebab but I'd already got a Chicken in the oven so it will have to wait another day.

hiccupgirl · 15/03/2015 18:40

I'd agree. As much as I like getting a Chinese or Indian takeaway, I find more choice of things I actually want at the supermarket. Tescos have recently been doing a great range of small tapas style dishes that I love and I can't get those as a takeaway round here. Also it means DH and I can have different things as he usually wants a curry but I find most of them set off my IBS badly.

Bakeoffcake · 15/03/2015 18:50

We live rurally so don't have much takeaway choice. We also have no home delivery so I'd much prefer to get an M and S or waitrose meal.

Last night we had M and S Mexican- chicken fajitas with pepper and onion, sour cream and tomato salsa. It was delicious and cost about £8 for 3 of us. I did get some nachos and put grated cheese and chopped onion in them.

Was yum!

lampygirl · 15/03/2015 21:24

Can't beat Pizza Hut if you want pizza, not enough sauce on supermarket ones, however curry and Chinese are always better with home cooked rice and a sauce jar/flavour sachet type thing. Chicken and a load of veg. Always under a fiver for 2 and you know that most of the ingredients are good.

Dustybinlydia · 23/03/2015 15:18

I would choose a takeaway over supermarket alternatives, every time.

richthegreatcornholio · 23/03/2015 16:02

Supermarket 'take-always' are just complete shite compared to a proper take-away.

SomewhereIBelong · 23/03/2015 16:14

Asda build your own pizza is better than any takeaway pizza we have had.

But you can't beat our local Chinese takeaway or chippy.

Mrscog · 23/03/2015 16:16

It depends, most supermarket takeaways are nowhere near as good, but the Waitrose Indian range is a VERY good substitute, and when the £10 for 2 mains, 2 sides and a rice or naan is on, pretty good value!

TheMoa · 23/03/2015 16:19

With the exception of spring rolls from the Co-Op, I've never had good 'takeaway style' food from a supermarket/M&S.

Our local restaurants are very good though, the Chinese place we get our takeaways from is amazing (and gets the highest possible hygiene rating) , and the pizza place must have magic ovens and awesome suppliers.

The supermarket stuff is awful, no matter what range I buy from.
