I suddenly have the most outrageously painful toothache, I've taken a paracetamol but it's not touching it! I have antibiotics left over from a few months ago they're 500mg, but I'm not sure if I can take one (I suspect it's an infection) because I'm pregnant (first trimester)
If I phoned nhs direct for advice would I be an absolute time wasting numpty? Feel like climbing the walls in pain right now! Hmm

phone the nhs direct

uglyswan · 14/03/2015 21:53

Nooo OP, please don't take leftover antibiotics!!! Call NHS 111 and ask for emergency dental care (it'll cost you £18.50, but if you can afford it it's definitely worth it!) So sorry for you, acute toothache is really mindblowingly excrutiating. Get well soon!

Elisheva · 14/03/2015 21:54

A single antibiotic will do nothing. Do you need to see an out of hours dentist? I think NHS direct can give you the number.

NatalieMc82 · 14/03/2015 21:54

Phone them!! You are in pain and that is what they are there for! They may even be able to get you seen by an emergency dentist (I don't know if this is available in all areas but certainly some). And it would certainly not make you a time waster or a numpty.
Hope you get on ok.

ThePickledPoet · 14/03/2015 21:54

Thank you :) was worried I was being a time waster! I have a hot water bottle held on my cheek and it's still agony :( x

Icantthinkofausernameatall · 14/03/2015 21:55

Sorry I can't be much help but don't take the antibiotics, they won't help with the pain.
Toothache is one of the worst thing along with earache!
If you can get hold of some clove oil that numbs the pain slightly but I'd try and see the dentist as soon as you can.
I really sympathise with you and I'm so sorry I can't be more help!

RJnomore · 14/03/2015 21:55

In the meantime gargle saltwater round it and can you crush half an aspirin into it?

It's okay to take aspirin and paracetamol isn't it?

ThePickledPoet · 14/03/2015 21:56

Thank you all for your replies! I'm going to phone now :) Xxx

Isn't all dental care free in pregnancy? Assume that covers emergency as suggested above but I could be wrong. Good luck op. I feel your pain. No advice but Flowers for you in sympathy.

Chocolatefudgebrownieicecream · 14/03/2015 21:58

Don't take aspirin in first trimester I am pretty sure it's dangerous (check, but don't take before checking)

TheoriginalLEM · 14/03/2015 21:59

get to the ooh dentist. 111 should have the number. around here ut is dentaline. i actually had root treatment at the emergency dentist - i was in too much pain to argue. I need to get it finished off but the root is dead so no pain. It worked immediately. You will need antibiotics but probably not the ones you have.

Belindabelle · 14/03/2015 22:00

Sip ice cold water. If it is an abscess the cold will make the vessels contract and relieve the pressure on the nerve.

You have my upmost sympathy. Childbirth is a breeze compared to this.

Don't use a hot water bottle -it can draw the infection through into your cheek, which is not good!

RJnomore · 14/03/2015 22:02

Oh sorry!Blush

Don't take aspirin then.

When I had awful toothache recently DH got me a numbing gel in tesco which was great.

uglyswan · 14/03/2015 22:08

Seconding the clove oil suggestion - if you haven't got clove oil (what?), chewing the damn things helps as well: they'll leave your mouth completely numb and dribbly, but it's still some improvement.

firefly78 · 14/03/2015 22:10

i took aspirin everyday in pregnancy to prevent pre eclampsia?

musicalendorphins2 · 14/03/2015 22:10

Oh you poor thing, I hope the dentist can offer some relief. Good luck.

Totality22 · 14/03/2015 22:16

I'm not sure clove oil is meant to be taken in pregnancy? It's vile stuff.

I would assume if OP is in early pregnancy she may not have her exemption card yet.

Salt water, ring 111 and don't take left over antibiotics. . I had several infections during my first pregnancy and ended up on antibiotics 3 times in as many months (I'd only had antibiotics 3 times in my life prior to pregnancy). Antibiotics are fine in pregnancy but do need to be prescribed by a dentist who has all the medical facts.

PenguinTuxedo · 14/03/2015 22:18

I read you can't use clove oil in pregnancy. I'd ring NHS Direct, op. Hope they can sort a dentist for you.

Guiltypleasures001 · 14/03/2015 22:21

My nan used to give me a sip of whisky to cover the tooth it used to numb it and some sort of antiseptic properties Hmm obviously spat it out or oil of cloves, now that's truly disgusting.

Thee a spot just behind your jaw op that if passed hard will give some benefit for a while as well

GiddyOnZackHunt · 14/03/2015 22:22

Firefly - you were probably on a low dose of aspirin as a blood thinning precaution under medical guidance. Taking ordinary doses of aspirin isn't recommended and low dose wouldn't touch the pain.

Fluffyears · 14/03/2015 22:41

As a po days the heat my draw the infection I to your face so be careful. Ooh dentist will help I had to go at new year.

OddBodkins · 14/03/2015 23:05

Please call Nhs direct. I had a wisdom tooth infection whilst I was pregnant and they got me sorted out.

backwardpossom · 14/03/2015 23:08

You have my sympathy OP - I had an infected wisdom tooth just over a year ago and I'd rather have gone through labour again than that.
