To think that gravy on chips is illogical.. and working class...

My heart sinks when I have a meal with fries and (it IS always) a working class server decides without asking that any liquid on the plate is there solely to turn something that is clearly cooked for crispyness into mush. Its the same with beans or anything.

Its double illogical (which I think is a class thing) because NOT doing that means you can have soggy and shit or crispy and lovely, whereas once a fry even remotely touches mush, its fucked.

I know about Iceland, but are all working class meals flavourless gullet swilling mush? Is that where it comes from?

ooh nice ouryve, we'll be having chips with our crocodile and kangeroo burgers.

ghostyslovesheep · 14/03/2015 17:22

Notta I hope you are talking proper fish cakes - or savoury cakes?

white fish and spuds mushed up with chives , battered and fried Grin I miss them so much

BolshierAyraStark · 14/03/2015 17:23

Chips with Hendersons & gravy is just bloody gorgeous & I don't give a flying fuck if you think I'm working class Hmm

Sorelip · 14/03/2015 17:23

hesterton the secret is to use a shitload of vinegar in the liquor. All over the mash and pie as well. Otherwise it's pretty tasteless.

I'm southern but love chips and gravy. Got the habit in secondary school. Haven't tried it with cheese though...

CunningCat · 14/03/2015 17:24

Is op Katie Hopkins? Show of (virtual) hands!!!!

MythicalKings · 14/03/2015 17:25

Not sure it's a class thing but there should never be gravy on chips.

ghostyslovesheep · 14/03/2015 17:25

No KH would reply more and be more of a cunt funny

Enormouse · 14/03/2015 17:35

Chips and curry sauce. Grin the northern irish just don't make it like the chippies in the Midlands Sad

I thought that Ikea was a reclaimed middle class enclave, like Lidl and Aldi? Y'know where the trendy but frugal got their socktopuses and tealights?

WayfaringStranger · 14/03/2015 17:39

I really fancy some chippie chips right now.

FindoGask · 14/03/2015 17:41

chips and gravy are the tits! Same principle as roast potatoes and gravy really: ie, world-class cuisine.

SaucyJack · 14/03/2015 17:42

I thought the OP was quite funny- but then I've never even eaten chips and gravy, never mind suffered some weird tribal urge to defend it Grin

Bloody Northerners. And you wonder why we all think you're so miserable.

Nocturne123 · 14/03/2015 17:50

Enormouse , that may be true but there was something strangely satisfying about a curry half and half from the Chinese after a night out in Belfast Smile

Ah nostalgia

nilbyname · 14/03/2015 17:54

That Parmo thing looks like a bastardisation of a chicken Parmesan?!

Bet I could annihilate one of I was tres in my cups!

OriginalHugsy · 14/03/2015 17:54

Ahh heck I'm illogically doubley hungry now for some soggy fucked up gravy chips Grin

RitaOrange · 14/03/2015 17:55

I have to say I have never had chips and gravy or chips on their own with anything.
I just have fish and chips or chips and a fishcake- our chip shop does them and they are gorgeous, lovely but parsley not chives.

Gruntfuttock · 14/03/2015 17:55

"a curry half and half"

What's that? Confused

Enormouse · 14/03/2015 17:57

That's true nocturne. They do fantastic Chinese here. Indian otoh… Sad. I have yet to find a good one.

Enormouse · 14/03/2015 17:58

Half rice, half chips (I think)

Branleuse · 14/03/2015 18:04

gloriously deliciously working class

supersop60 · 14/03/2015 18:06

Don't mind gravy on chips, but I was a bit Hmm when DP wanted gravy on his fish the other day. Never seen that before.

CarbeDiem · 14/03/2015 18:19

Gravy chip butty is the best - soggy chips AND soggy bun.

Working class - tick
Northern - tick
Couldn't give a shit - tick

Chillyegg · 14/03/2015 18:19

A parmo is a food for kings?

Chicken breast baked in béchamel sauce then bread crumbed fried and covered in cheese. You can too it with pepperoni or veg and mushrooms!

All are welcome to visit and we can have Parmos and chips and gravy after we've spent the night in thw local social.
Blue nun eee your posh!

DrCoconut · 14/03/2015 18:25

Has to be chips and mushy peas. A chippy meal is incomplete without peas. My southern DH and in laws don't get it at all.

Gruntfuttock · 14/03/2015 18:29

Oh I say! This thread has become quite frightful! I'm so glad that I've never been oop North.
I've also just realised that I haven't been in a chip shop since I was quite a young child, so that'll be over 50 years then.

bobthebuddha · 14/03/2015 18:30

Gruntfuttock, try poutine at least once. I always thought it sounded rank, but it's actually lush. Lots of lovely gravy, fraightfully common Grin
