feel your pain OP, i am a seasoned sufferer of cystitis and UTIs.

this always works for me: drink as much water as physically possible and dont stop, wee EVERY time you have the urge (saving it up just gives the bacteria a nice environment to thrive in, you need to slough them out regularly), dont eat or drink anything sugary or acidic, have bicarb in water or boots OTC sodium citrate prep.

definitely dont take your friends abx!

This is one of the few times in life that antibiotics are definitely in order. I wouldn't want to take a chance that it could spread, kidneys etc... Other than that the only thing that seemed to bring me relief the one time I had a UTI is drinking gallons and gallons of water for days on end. Fell for you, I had to take a 5 hour plane ride at the height of my UTI. Worst memory ever.

velourvoyageur · 14/03/2015 18:57

Aw kid. Sorry you feel so shit. Sure it's not a kidney infection?

I was (tmi) pissing blood clots last weekend, big ones. Drank three litres of water and the blood finally stopped at the end of the afternoon. Literally spent the day in the loo. No symptoms since. Chugging water always works for me (though I'm sure the infection's still there yadda yadda).

Didn't know there was a difference between UTI and cystitis?

Shock you poor thing. Flowers for your past suffering!

ahbollocks · 14/03/2015 19:33

Yy ibuprofen and paracetamol alternative 2 hours

Marshy · 14/03/2015 19:54

Good to hear that op. Make sure you take the full course.

velocitykate · 14/03/2015 22:16

I had exactly the same yesterday evening - I do get it quite often, but this was the worst ever. Started about 4.30 as I was driving home from work. Immediately took a sodium citrate sachet and started to drink loads of water (this usually lessens it enough that I am comfortable enough to get to a doctor with a urine sample). It just got worse and worse, It felt like I was desperate for a wee all the time, then my wee turned pink.

Phoned OOH GP who were happy to leave a prescription without seeing me and within an hour of taking the first tablet, it was starting to ease (this was about 10pm). Took till about 2am before I was comfortable enough to sleep, but am much better today - just a bit of frequency. Hope you feel better soon.

poppymoon · 14/03/2015 22:19

hmmmmm i'm glad everyones abx seem to be kicking in quickly but a bit concerned that i'm on day 3 now and still feel like shite.

backtowork2015 · 15/03/2015 14:21

take vitabiotics high strength cranberry tablets as a preventative once this is sorted.

pepperfish · 15/03/2015 16:16

Go to the doctor ASAP. They won't do a lot except tell you to go home and drink lots and take some paracetamol, but it'll be on your notes so that when you go back and it's got worse, they will be more willing to give you medication. By which point you'll be tearing your hair out and begging for it.

A bad UTI is horrible. Hope you feel better soon.

Littlecaf · 15/03/2015 16:22

Feel you pain, OP.

Get on the loo, get a large bottle of water and drink drink drink. Keep filling up. Don't move for about half a day.

Phone GP, get first available appointment. Get antibiotics. Don't take no for an answer.

Also, up thread someone said don't drink aloe vera juice in pregnancy. Why? I downed it in pints during my first trimester, was my only craving and was the only thing that hydrated me properly. My son is 4 weeks and seems fine.........?

Sazzle41 · 15/03/2015 16:46

Salt water bath in not too hot water. Then ask Chemist - isnt there that over counter thing? Cymalon ??? (dont quote me on that, years since i had cystitis )

bimbobaggins · 15/03/2015 18:55

Cranberry tablets from holland and barret work a treat for general cystitis but for a uti definitely ab's

RummidgeGeneral · 15/03/2015 19:05

I know it has been said by other posters but please spread the word to women that a wee after sex prevents cystitis. It doesn't have to be a big wee. Just passing a few drops does the trick. I wish this advice was given to women in the packets of Cymalon etc, but of course that would cut into their profits. We should tell our daughters about this. I suffered really badly when I was a young woman until a doctor told me to do this, and then never again.

GreenPetal94 · 15/03/2015 20:05

I've tried loads of things and for me nothing works apart from antibiotics

BernadetteMatthews · 15/03/2015 21:28

I did a wee after sex last night and have started to feel that familiar burn.

Sorry for the tmi.

RobinHumphries · 15/03/2015 21:39

Pissing blood clots is the worst pain ever, the burn fades to nothing in comparison.

fadingfast · 15/03/2015 21:41

I have found bearberry tablets really effective for the early symptoms of cystitis. I was first given them by an italian pharmacist on my honeymoon 13 years ago Blush. Obviously once it's set in then antibiotics are the way to go, but I'd recommend giving them a go if you are a frequent sufferer.
