Some one stole my boots!

BeeRayKay · 12/03/2015 12:00

Went to the gym this morning.

My boots wouldn't fit in a normal locker, and I didn't want to use a disabled persons locker.

So put them under the bench, after seeing a few other ladies do the same with theirs.

Came back. GONE.

Someone stole my brand new 48hour old boots.

I'm gutted.

I know I shouldn't take stuff thats valuable.

But AIBU to think it's not okay to just take someone elses stuff?

What Vegas said, making sure you tell the manager (and the police if it gets that far) what the receptionist had said. Check the CCTV to see if the receptionist had a bulging bag when she left too!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 12/03/2015 14:11

I said they weren't lost, they'd been taken and she said that I was wrong.

Don't leave it at that will you. How annoying.

I was about to say the same thing as Flipchart it could be staff as much as it could be another customer.

Flipchart · 12/03/2015 14:12

When I used to work at the Waterplace at Bolton years ago this happened a lot. People did call the police but they just asked where they left out. If they were there wasn't much that could be done. If they had been in a locker and some broke into that, well that's a different kettle of fish.
Staff were used to members of the public ranting that thing had been stolen and they weren't going to leave the building but what could they do? They can't just gives names and addresses of people out.
People take things that are left out. Of course it's thieving but there are thieves about. The signs warn you to put processions away.

VenusStarr · 12/03/2015 15:28

Does anyone else suspect the receptionist? Confused it's just the way she dismissed you by saying they'd not been stolen.

I'm sorry this has happened, you'll probably not find out what happened to them, it's rubbish for you :(

PeaceOfWildThings · 12/03/2015 15:53

Did you see the receptionist's feet?

ineedabodytransplant · 12/03/2015 15:57

You can request a copy of the CCTV at the time of 'losing' your boots. It may cost you £10 or so if they are real arseholes about it.

To comply with the DPA they MUST have a nominated person responsible for the CCTV system. That is the person you need to speak to.

ClumsyNinja · 12/03/2015 16:24

OP, how awful! Definitely complain to the manager and keep complaining until they take some action.

hennybeans same thing happened to us with my 4yr DS coming home in shoes that were a size too small and very well worn. His shoes were only a couple of weeks old and the next size up.

I was livid as this was at a pre-school so the staff somehow mixed them up when getting the kids footwear back on after an activity.

His name was written with an indelible marker inside his shoes but despite a message going to all the parents, no-one ever brought his shoes back. Obviously I initially assumed the child had made a genuine mistake getting dressed but as there were only about 9 boys attending that day, theiir parent must have realised they had the wrong shoes on and chose to keep them. This was also in a very naice area so I was even more gutted that they didn't do the decent thing.

I complained to the manager on several occasions and they eventually refunded the cost of a replacement pair.

Floggingmolly · 12/03/2015 16:31

What did the receptionist suggest had happened to them, if she was so certain they hadn't been stolen???

BeeRayKay · 12/03/2015 17:52

chrome that's awful! Bet you're feet were in shreds!

To whoever asked.

They were £60. I had a discount code so got them cheaper, but they were meant to be £60, so I can replace next month. I just shouldn't have to.

I think I will ask to speak to the manager tomorrow. It's a council run gym should that make a difference?

Oh and there aren't any signs up actually which I thought was bizarre. Normally I'd expect to see signs saying things like "any property is left at owners risk" but there wasn't anything.

And I wasn't in work after, but I had an appt with my mental health care team and had to go with my manky running trainers on. Which doesn't look good when I'm trying to convince then I'm doing ok and part of that for me, is to be dressed smartly.

She could only say you were mistaken if there was a similar pair that was left there, as though someone had just put the wrong ones on. If there wasn't a pair left, then of course it was theft.

You poor thing. I hope your team understood.

Flipchart · 12/03/2015 18:54

Can't you speak to the gym now?
If its a. Council run one they are usually open until 9 or 10 and with the time difference from this morning there will be a different receptionist and duty manager on shift.

BeeRayKay · 12/03/2015 19:40

Good point. Ill call them now.

God this is just yet another shitty thing this week.

People are cocks.

My lovely green addidas hoodie was stolen from a council run gym changing room once, I was stupid to leave it there and should have known better because I work there !!!!!
Although you would have had a much more sympathetic response from us there is not much we could do. cctv is certainly not allowed in changing rooms and we could have over a hundred people swiping through in the space of an hour on a busy morning, unfortunately leisure centres do seem to be a target for thieves nasty little scumbags we have got plenty of notices about warning people to lock up belongings .
Really sorry about your boots Wine

MatildaTheCat · 12/03/2015 20:12

I had my sandals stolen whilst swimming.

Had to drive home with bare feet.Sad

silverlace · 12/03/2015 20:16

It is so annoying that people feel entitled to do this sort of thing. What does go through their head "Oh look some new boots, I'll just have those."

I used to go to a posh gym and came out of the pool dripping wet to find my lovely fluffy towel had been taken off the hook. Another time at the same place someone stole my brand new Soap and Glory shower gel out of the plastic bag I had left it in on a hook by the shower. They would have had to remove my towel and go through the bag which contained shampoo etc.

BifsWif · 12/03/2015 21:27

Sorry but the advice above is incorrect. They will not allow you to view CCTV footage due to data protection laws. You can only request CCTV footage if you have been filmed and are in it, in wh i case you have to provide a request in writing, describe what you were wearing in the footage and then pay a £10 fee. As you obviously won't be in the footage of someone else taking/carrying your boots they can only release it to the police. I suggest you contact the police and report the theft and see if they get anywhere. I'm sorry about your boots, is disgusting that people just help themselves to someone else's belongings!

watchingthedetectives · 12/03/2015 21:32

Someone stole my trousers at work once - they were part of a suit so was left with just the jacket - v odd. Had to go shopping in scrubs at lunchtime as I was on an interview panel in the afternoon.

Most annoying

Buttwing · 12/03/2015 21:36

It's so horrible when something like this happens. Dd had her flip flops stolen when she was swimming. I was so disgusted that someone would steal a child's shoes. She had to go home barefoot dp had to give her piggy back. Some people are just nasty.

angelface34 · 12/03/2015 21:46

It's really sad that we live in a world were you cannot leave F'in shoes out without someone taking them. Sorry about this op

Flipchart · 13/03/2015 11:53

Any luck with the leisure centre today Bee?

Kiffykaffycoffee · 13/03/2015 13:27

So sorry about your boots OP. I had a similar experience over 20 years ago and had to walk home in socks! It was at the swimming pool, naice Midlands town, new boots left on shoe bench at entrance to changing rooms. Then gone! And staff completely unhelpful and unsympathetic.
I think thieves are always on the lookout for new shoes/boots to steal so now I only wear my grottiest ones AND hide them in a plastic bag. So far so good!!
I also think the leisure centres are indirectly encouraging thieves by providing a place for people to leave their shoes. I think people are lulled by a false sense of security because everyone leaves their shoes there. The centres should provide more large lockers and warn ppl they leave shoes at their own risk!
Thieves swapping outgrown children's shoes for a new, bigger pair has been going on for years too. Naming them can provide some protection.
I also have an old pair of shoes in the car boot to drive home in in case mine get punched... But I doubt anyone would want too Wink
