To be mystified by good foundation?

DD is nearly 6 months, I'm still a good 3 stone overweight. I've accepted that this will take some time to rectify, and so have decided to focus on my rapidly falling out hair and makeup. I see photos, and people about with flawless looking skin, but not obviously foundationed. How do they do it? For what it's worth, my skin is slightly dry, and has the odd discolouration. I use max factor 3 in 1, but it either doesn't make much of a difference, or I clearly have too much on. Any foundation experts out there who can recommend?

You might get more help in the Style and Beauty topic

I use Clinique foundation and it looks pretty natural and flawless

nottheOP · 10/03/2015 13:45

Foundation is my only bit of expensive make up, applied with a foundation brush.

Go to all the counters and say you'd like them to colour match you and give you a sample so you can see it in daylight and see how it wears. This helps to avoid wasting money.

I like Estee Lauder double wear and chanel but really it depends on what you want and your skin type.

Nabootique · 10/03/2015 13:45

I think a lot of it is to do with good colour matching. Lisa Eldridge has some excellent videos advising on how to choose your foundation.

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 10/03/2015 13:46

I always think it best to focus on making your skin as good as you can so exfoliate and moisturise especially if its a bit dry then you have the best chance of getting what you want from foundation. I use lancome miracle air de teint, i love it.

BolshierAyraStark · 10/03/2015 13:47

Style & beauty-I use Illamasqua, expensive but good.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/03/2015 13:47

I use shiseido with a brush as well. Brush stops too much caking on and the expensive foundation is good so a tiny drop does my whole face. It really is worth going to the counters and having LOOOONNNG discussions with them.

mrsmugoo · 10/03/2015 13:49

I've tried all kinds of expensive foundations - Chanel, MAC, Nars, Laura Mercier etc but my favourite is Bourjois Healthy Mix. Cheap as chips from boots. I use the Real Techniques buffing brush to apply it.

BuzzardBird · 10/03/2015 13:50

I recommend Bourjois if you are on a budget. The Healthy Mix Foundation gives me the same coverage as Clinique Even Better and will go on well with a dry skin. Some of the pricier foundations can be a little harsh if your skin is sensitive.

do counters still give out testers, last time I asked in JL they said no.

worksallhours · 10/03/2015 13:59

I use MAC foundation and have for years (I have very yellowy skin and it is the only brand that seems to make a suitable foundation colour for me).

I tend to use either a serum or beauty flash balm underneath the foundation, so I get a dewy look that makes it look as though I am not really wearing much foundation. I also use my fingertips to apply it as sponges, brushes etc have never really worked for me.

As my face can end up looking quite "wet" after moisturiser, serum/balm and foundation, I give it a quick blast with my hair dryer to set it. I don't use powder.

I don't formally exfoliate but I do wash my face with a muslin cloth every morning, which gives my skin a quick slough.

BuzzardBird · 10/03/2015 14:08

Alpacino They do on Clinique counters in Debenhams and Boots, you get about 2 weeks in a pot.

A primer used on top of a foundation gives a smooth finish too. For this Lanacane cream is just as good as anything else.

nottheOP · 10/03/2015 14:12

al I got one in boots last week

Gruntfuttock · 10/03/2015 14:12

I don't believe that anything can make skin more flawless yet natural then Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream which is a proper Korean BB cream not like the vastly inferior so-called 'BB creams' brought out by western companies over the last few years. I first heard about it when it was mentioned in passing on a craft forum, of all things, about a year ago and after looking it up online and reading umpteen reviews I bought some from Amazon. My goodness, it really blew me away. I will never use anything else now and have a nice little stockpile. As well as from Amazon you can buy it from yesstyle.co.uk as well as a few other places, but IME it's cheapest on Amazon.

OrinocoTheWomble · 10/03/2015 14:27

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser (not the oil free one) makes me look even toned and a little dewy! It's very easy to apply and gives good colour cover. Think costs about £34 - worth going into a store that sells it and getting them to pick the best colour for you. You don't really look like you've got anything on. Makes me look much better anyway!

Offler · 10/03/2015 16:16

A friend recommended Le Touche Eclait by YSL for my no longer quite youthful skin. I popped into Debenhams for a colour match and a 7-day tester pot, which I am still using nearly two weeks later!!
Use a brush to put it on, and I use less than the assistant put on, but looks great (and I am not a make-uppy person, one of my previous foundations I was still using was 8 years old Blush).

AlPacinosHooHaa · 10/03/2015 16:18

offler did they just give you the tester after the colour match? try a hard sell on you?

was procedure, coloyr match now have a tester, did you have to ask for it?

sparklepopsicles · 10/03/2015 16:19

Bare minerals with a brush. That is all

OscarWinningActress · 10/03/2015 16:25

Am recently converted to the Bourjois healthy mix as well. It's wonderful and inexpensive. Did you know it's made by Chanel?

Exfoliating and moisturizing really well cannot be emphasized enough. Moisturizing properly is the key with foundation :)

AlPacinosHooHaa · 10/03/2015 16:29

Is bourjois dry and powerdy or dewy

BuzzardBird · 10/03/2015 16:32

Chanel have sold Bourjois to Coty.

RobbStarksBitch · 10/03/2015 16:41

I've used all sorts from high end brands to 'drug store' brands and I have to say that to me it all boils down to your technique.

With a bit of practice you can achieve a flawless look with even the cheaper foundations. I use a lot of Rimmel products. I apply my foundation with the real techniques miracle complexion sponge and it works a treat. I know you said you have dry skin but it's important to set the foundation in place with a powder so it doesn't just slide straight off! Determine where your dry areas are and avoid over powdering them as this will make the dry skin more obvious.

iLoveFlop · 10/03/2015 16:56

Thank you everyone, think I'm going to try the Bourjois due to my rapidly diminishing maternity pay.

I may end up obese and bald, but by God will my skin look clear!

If you have any large pores or fine lines that you want smoothing try the Lanacane Ant-chaffing gel £6.50 over the top of the foundation, you will be amazed at the difference.

Ohwhatsoccuring · 10/03/2015 17:31

You are not alone, I am in exactly the same position. Too poor to go to WW and moulting worse than the dog.
You have inspired me and I feel some new foundation may be the way forward. I can at least attempt to look fresh and dewy whilst covered in baby sick.
Good luck.

RavioliOnToast · 10/03/2015 17:34

vichy dermablend is my holy grail of foundation! I use mac full coverage for special occasions but it dries my skin out with it being a cake type . the vichy is available in boots for £16 and it's classed as 'skincare' as it's a camouflage foundation so it's good to stock up on their 3 for 2 days! hth
