To be mystified by good foundation?

DD is nearly 6 months, I'm still a good 3 stone overweight. I've accepted that this will take some time to rectify, and so have decided to focus on my rapidly falling out hair and makeup. I see photos, and people about with flawless looking skin, but not obviously foundationed. How do they do it? For what it's worth, my skin is slightly dry, and has the odd discolouration. I use max factor 3 in 1, but it either doesn't make much of a difference, or I clearly have too much on. Any foundation experts out there who can recommend?

The Bourjois health mix is a good cheapish foundation, definitely.

I reckon it's more a case of what you do to your face before the foundation that counts, hot cloth cleansing, then a facial oil at night (and non-branded Rosehip is cheap as chips on Amazon, try Naissance seller)

I use Estee Lauder Double Wear which gives a medium coverage. I have acne and rosacea and it covers the redness really well but spots are still slightly visible. My holy grail foundation was Estee Lauder DW Camouflage but they discontinued my shade Sad My only annoyance with EL foundation is it's crap for flash photography. So in all photos of me out with friends for the evening, I'm like a shining bright moon face.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid gives a great medium coverage too but it breaks me out in spots.

Revlon Colorstay Foundation is a great alternative to DW. Similar consistency and shade but starts to go a bit speckley and oxidised after a few hours.

Bolshier, which Illamasqua one do you use? I used the rich one years ago after a recommendation from a friend. Looked great on her but on me it separated and went really weird and patchy. Only used it the once and it's not exactly cheap!

Wait, hang on.. wear gel or primer over foundation? Seriously? Doesn't that undo all the work of blending the foundation evenly?

iLoveMushrooms · 10/03/2015 18:29

clinque is a good foundation, use a matt powder on top. Use a brush for the foundation, then apply powder and use a kubuki brush to rub it all in and make it even.
At night put coconut oil on your face and lips since you have dry skin, its good and will make a big difference and of course try to drink more water it really does help skin.

Lanacane over the top of foundation? Ive been using it underneath. Is this wrong?

wiggywigglewoo · 10/03/2015 19:21

I use MAC studio fix fluid applied with a Real Techniques blush. I developed horrendous acne when I was pregnant that got even worse postpartum and it was the only thing that didn't make it worse. Now my acne is gone but I still have some scarring/hypetpigmentation and it covers it really well. Tempted to try the Bourjois healthy mix as a cheaper alternative though after seeing all the positive comments on here.

Another vote for borjois... Also looking after your skin... So some kind of hot cloth cleanser ( super drug vitamin e or no7 etc) some cheapo flannels to wash it off gives some gentle exfoliation. Then an exfoliating toner (worth looking at ones with acids) in and a moisturiser that suits your skin (aldi lacura is good on a budget)

EssexGurl · 10/03/2015 20:01

Boots no7 foundation match service is fab. Only foundation I have found that doesn't make me look like I am wearing lots of base. It is me but much better. No uneven tones, blotches etc. I hardly wore make up but feltI needed to as I got older. Now wear it most days. Total vanity I know but makes feel better about myself.

mrsmugoo · 10/03/2015 20:36

I use my little one's cheeky wipes to "hot cloth" cleanse with - the microfibre hand and face ones are amazing for cleansing!

mrsmugoo · 10/03/2015 20:37

Another foundation I would recommend is MAC Face & Body. It gives a "real skin" look.

The bourbon healthy mix serum 'gel foundation is amazing stuff. It is so light. A tiny bit seems to cover blemishes and imperfections really well but blends seamlessly and looks so dewy and natural. I am a complete convert from my olay BBC cream that I was using before .

That's what I was thinking jock, surely putting a gel on over the top of your foundation would smear it a bit? I have HUGE hideous pores, so I want someone to come along and tell me that this will work.

BuzzardBird · 10/03/2015 20:58

Jock and Maom just dab it onto the areas that need it after foundation. A lady of Clinique told me that their primers work much better on top of foundation and in some cases it is true.

BuzzardBird · 10/03/2015 21:00

I find my pores are better covered by applying the primer (I like the Clarins one) after my foundation. Just where you need it, not all over.

OscarWinningActress · 10/03/2015 21:56

AlPacino I'd say it's more dewy than powdery but it leaves sort of a satin finish that's just lovely. My skin is combination and it somehow mattifies the oily bits and moisturizes, soothes and glides over the dry bits. And it does NOT clog pores (my most-feared foundation 'crime' IMO) even though it's not labelled as such.

Honestly, it's not the foundation that's key, it's the application. I'm in my thirties and I only discovered the secret to flawless application myself this year. You need this product: BeautyBlender sponge. It's amazing, I have used it to apply cheap and expensive foundations and it gives buildable coverage that looks amazing (I have quite the foundation collection as I've been on a decade long hunt for the perfect foundation only to discover it's the application that creates the flawless look, not the product itself so much). The best thing about this sponge is that it takes zero skill to use, it worked perfectly the first time I tried and I'm hopeless with any makeup or hair tool that requires some skill. I had tried foundation brushes in the past but was not happy with the results so this has been a great discovery for me. Here is a link, hopefully it's on sale in the UK. Beware of cheap versions, I tried a cheap alternative I found on Amazon but the quality of sponge was lower and didn't give me a flawless finish. I guess it's the particular type of sponge material in the Beauty Blender that makes it work so well.

Oh, another I've been doing for the past year that has helped my face has been... shaving!!! Yep, I jumped on the dermaplaning (fancy word for female face shaving) bandwagon after having it done at a spa. I was so delighted at how soft and completely smooth my skin felt that I bought razors on Amazon had (cautiously, very, very cautiously) taught myself to shave. I also used youtube videos to learn from. I do it once a month or so, I NEVER do my upper lip (I wax or use cream for that area) and I"m pleased at how smooth my face looks. In case you wonder, the hair does not grow back looking thicker as it's fine, vellus hair not terminal hair (hair on our legs and upper lip area is terminal hair). I use these razors: www.amazon.com/Eyebrow-Razor-Beautiful-Eyebrows-12pcs/dp/B008N1NFLO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426028641&sr=8-2&keywords=womens+eyebrow+razors
