God knows what mine gets up to all day. I have asked on occasion - I really have - but I get the urge to start smashing the crockery by the time he finishes the first sentence. I think it might involve a sophisticated way of counting toilet rolls.

AIBU to start making things up (weasel trainer, Beyonce's body double, etc.) if anyone asks me again what he does?

Yes. I worked alongside him for a year and still work in the same industry. I couldn't do his job (it's very specialist) but I understand what he does and enjoy hearing about events in his working day.

KatoPotato · 10/03/2015 15:57

DH is an animator. He makes cartoons and gets stressed about colours.

My Dad says if you can't explain your job in one sentence then it's not a real job.

ClaimedByMe · 10/03/2015 16:03

Dp works in an oil refinery, I know his job title and he uses job related words like flange, pumps and pipes but I switch off when he speaks Blush

Boleh · 10/03/2015 16:07

We work for different bits of the same company and have a pretty good idea what each other do. We tend to vent about our day on the way home from work so I have a reasonable idea about the politics of his job and the irritations of the software systems and so on! He knows the same about mine. We couldn't do each other's jobs as they need different technical skills but I can (and do) make intelligent conversation about his job with his colleagues if we meet them on the way in or out of the building.
Oh and I have a pretty good idea about expensive mud and just how annoyed drillers get if you want them to waste time circulating bottoms up for rock samples Wink

Claimed is flange a real word? I had always presumed it was made up tech speak.

ShadowSpiral · 10/03/2015 16:14

0x530x610x750x630x79 - flange is definitely a real word.

A flange is the sticky out rim you get around the end of some pipes, it lets you bolt or attach other pipe fittings like valves into the middle of pipelines.

And train wheels I think are also usually flanged, the sticky out rim (or flange) there helps them stay on the rails properly.

Goneintohibernation · 10/03/2015 16:15

I know exactly what he does, but only because it is the same job I do, so I guess I am cheating a bit.

noddingninja · 10/03/2015 16:16

DH is doing a PhD in drug chemistry, something to do with crystalisation, he tells me but my chemistry A level was a long time ago. It mostly goes over my head. I'm a medic and he understands my job a lot better (likes to think he could just turn up and do it for me Hmm)

And no we don't have a Walter White style lock up full of cash, sadly.

blueshoes · 10/03/2015 16:20

Both dh and I are lawyers so we have a good idea of what each of us does day-to-day in terms of tasks.

As for the content of those tasks, I understand the subject matter of what he does as I am familiar with his practice area, having studied it at law school and worked with colleagues in his same field and of course, listening to him.

However, he hasn't a clue about the content of what I do, no matter how I try to explain to him. It is just "something in the City" and involves a lot of finance and corporate jargon and market talk. To him, everyone is a "banker" which drives me nuts.

Thurlow · 10/03/2015 16:21

CarolaStorms - I'm a librarian who works in the City and DH does not have a scooby what I do all day. (clue: it's not 'reading books')

Waves furiously - me too Grin

Always fun to explain. "I'm a librarian. No, I don't work in a library. I work in a law firm. Yes, they have librarians. No, librarians aren't just the people you see in your local library. Actually it's a very highly qualified job. Well, I organise information and I find information and I do research and... Wait, why are you falling asleep?" Grin

(Actually I've found since I've moved to a new firm that has slightly juicier clients people are a lot more interested in what I do. Only I can't tell them anything!)

MrsSeymourButts · 10/03/2015 16:25

Kato, your dad sounds like a wise man...

My DH is a self employed builder, I work in the High Court, we seldom talk about our jobs unless something absolutely amazing or bizarre happens but we do talk about some of the characters we encounter during our work.

DH sees into peoples homes, I see into their misdemeanours and problems!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/03/2015 16:42

Yes and I wish DH would give himself a little more credit about what he does tbh!

TheBookofRuth
"No one understands what my DH does for a living, he's basically Chandler."

  • Is your DH my BiL? All I know is he works in IT in 'the city' - I've moved on from telling myself he's a Transponder and have come to the conclusion he's Moss from the IT Crowd (his voice is actually exactly the same which doesn't help!) imagines BIL emailing people to help put out an office fire as the emergency number is brilliantly too long Grin
livingzuid · 10/03/2015 16:49

DH works for one of the largest telecoms companies in Europe. I know exactly what he does and I'm super proud of him because he is very very good at what he does. I could also never in a million years do what he does so am always full of admiration. His office also seems full of affairs of the heart in the manner of a bad soap opera, so as a sahm I confess I quite enjoy hearing the latest instalment Blush

GoldenBeaches · 10/03/2015 16:53

I know what my dh "should" be doing at work but from his description of his day it sounds like he messes about with his work chums and they play a lot of pranks on each other Hmm he must get some work done though as he's recently been promoted.

Madamecastafiore · 10/03/2015 16:55

DH is a fund manager which means he manages funds!!

In reality he seems to be very blokey, swear a lot and manage to watch lots of sport!!

HSMMaCM · 10/03/2015 17:12

I want to be a law firm librarian. Never knew that was a job. Sounds fab.

Thurlow · 10/03/2015 17:28

It is indeed fab, HSMMaCM, just sadly there are a lot less of us nowadays then there were before the recession hit!

CarolaStorms · 10/03/2015 17:31

waves to Thurlow

Law firm here too! When I tell people what I do I often tell them my (slightly silly, v. corporate) job title first, then give in and say 'basically a librarian.' Then they'll say 'oh that must be nice, reading books all day.' YES, that's exactly what I do! The lawyers find that incredibly useful Grin

(that said, some days my job can be described as 'googling stuff for lawyers')

AyeAmarok · 10/03/2015 17:33

Who knew there were so many Very Important highly specialised jobs about.

This all sounds a bit "my DH is soooooooo important" TBH.

I know what my DH does all day. He knows what I do. We tall about it lots. Mine is specialised but he still is very interested and understands it.

I also know exactly what all my family members, in-laws and friends do all day, in all their very wide ranging occupations. Because it's interesting and I ask. I find this thread quite strange!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 10/03/2015 17:36

0x530x610x750x630x79 got totally caught yesterday crying with laughter re-reading the fat ball thread while at my desk. Grin

MummyPig24 · 10/03/2015 17:37

Nope. He's a calibration engineer. Something to do with antennas. He sometimes shows me the certificates and graphs he has to make. It looks insanely complicated! I've no idea what it really involves.

Hygellig · 10/03/2015 17:40

DH is a software developer/programmer. He has tried to explain what he does but must get frustrated because I have no knowledge of programming or much understanding of what he's trying to do.

PumpkinPie2013 · 10/03/2015 17:44

I do - we both teach in the same place Grin

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 10/03/2015 17:50

Yes, I used to work there too.
