To think it is rude to constantly check your mobile phone when out with friends/family?

Just that really. None of my friends do it, maybe just when pop to the loo but just had a night out with friends of a friend and they all had their mobiles on the table. Just...why? Fair enough if checking on babysitter or something very important but they seemed to be just checking for texts/facebook updates.

Between people texting and facebooking when they're out with friends, people shouting into mobiles on public transport, and people's mobiles constantly dinging and pinging and singing in shared offices, a general reminder of how rude and inconsiderate some of this behaviour is would be welcome.

Agree. Some people seem to have lost sight of the most basic semblance of good manners, such is their devotion to their mobile phones. I've been tempted, on occasion, to grab a mobile and fling it through the nearest window of a bus / train rather than listen to someone recount in minute detail, at top volume, every detail of their latest saga.

Yes, yes and yes - it is awful!

I commute a long way and am often on my phone to read twitter (actually have found out some interesting/useful stuff on it) so probably look as bad to some people, glued to my phone while on the train - but I wouldn't dream of it while socialising or with my family.

Hygellig, there are no signs and no one says anything but it's a private pool (swimming school hires private school pool out of school hours). Maybe that's the difference.

I have a friend who spends most of her time with people on the phone. Am used to it. I tried being annoyed but their is no point anymore.

I have actually asked people if they'd prefer to be out with whoever they're texting than me?! My friends all know what I think of it and give a justifiable reason if they do need to use their mob in my company or ask if it's ok.
