To not take DS(7) to A&E because he has a foil confetti star stuck up his nose

Yesterday I heard DS snorting and blowing his nose. It transpired that he had shoved a foil star (from a confetti bomb) up his nose. Actually, it didn't go up far enough the first time, so he pulled it out and then gave it a right shove, then discovered that he could't get it out.

Last night he said that he could mildly feel the star, then this morning he said that he couldn't feel it at all. I think it might have worked its way down his nasal passage and hopefully will have gone into his stomach with the expected result.

I've asked friends what to do and there's been a mixed response between trying to tweeze it out (NOOOOOOOOOOOOO), trying to make him sneeze - and then right up to taking him to A&E.

He can breathe, eat, swallow, talk moan as usual so he's obviously feeling OK. However I've also been told by a medic that if it hasn't come out within a day or so then I SHOULD take him to A&E.....

Apart from the 4 hour wait, I don't want to clog up A&E with something fairly minor - but then again, the foil star has quite sharp edges and it might scratch something internally on its way through...

What do you think?

PS this is true, not a joke/troll post.

Glad everything went ok today and the nostril is no longer sparkly. A lesson learned for your DS!

My DS would be just the same - he has no idea why he does certain daft things, he just does them.

You would be shocked at what people manage to put in themselves ... DH has removed light bulbs and ribena bottles over the years ??

Wine and Cake for you x

If it doesn't come loose then do follow the advice and take to the ED. It might not be a broken bone or anything major but if left there it may cause a localised infection, and in the nasal cavity that could not only be painful but also end up affecting his airway. There is also the (minor) danger that it could travel down the throat and cause an obstruction or irritation too. ED staff are trained to remove foreign bodies, it's part of why they exist so don't feel bad for taking him there because it's absolutely the correct service to use, though it might be worth going to a MIU if you have one nearby. The only bummer will be that you'll obviously be waiting a while as your child won't be a priority case as you've described it.

Please don't try to remove it yourself though with tweezers (I'm guessing from the original post you won't anyway!) as you might cause damage by doing so..... And be thankful it wasn't a marble like I did to myself aged 7 Grin

Oh and DS2 as a toddler managed to put rice crispies up his nose while I was also in the kitchen. Looked very unhappy for a short while. Took 2 sneezes to dislodge all of them and before I could removed them from his face/hands he ate them, snot and all....

Well done! What a tiring day though, a dose of worry and stress all around I should think?

SurprisedJerseySpud · 08/03/2015 22:11

DD2 shoved a popcorn kernel up her nose once. Had almost got her to blow it out when her elder sister said 'Yes like this' SNIFF

We went to A&E to get it suctioned out :\

Bless him, glad he's ok! I caught my 2 year old ramming a pink bead up his nose yesterday - swine! He must take after me, I ended up in hospital around the same age after shoving a baked bean up my nose.. Apparently by the time my parents got me there I was going blue! Shock

My husband is banned from super glue after gluing literally all his finger on one hand together and nearly sticking his other hand to it aswell. Twat. Grin

apostropheuse · 08/03/2015 22:30

I'm Glad you got it out in the end Smile

I have to admit I once had to go to A and E to have the rubber piece of one of those in-ear earphones removed from inside my ear. I was absolutely mortified when the doctor (who looked about twelve himself) told - me with a big grin on his face - that he normally removed them from thirteen year olds.

I was about 48 at the time. Grin

Your superglue story is briliant - thanks for sharing - of course, I mean that in a sympathetic / supportive way - I realise it wouldn't have been funny at the time

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/03/2015 23:02

My DN did something like this, twice. Apparently, the paper absolutely stank.

dougierose · 08/03/2015 23:04

DH & the superglue saga: fortunately it was only a thin layer so he managed to chio it off shakes head despairingly

Country Did you ever see the Junior Doctors programme when a man claimed to have fallen off the loo at such a freak angle that the loo brush wedged itself up his ar**? Go on, list the eyebrow braising items that have had to be removed :p :D

Again, thanks for the wine, flowers & cake and good wishes. Smile

Just been reminded of the time my BIL put Deep Heat on bollocks.

dougierose · 08/03/2015 23:09

justmy Actually it WAS hilarious at the time! He walked in and mumbled "ewrhjbfivesuoerfkiwdmuteethtigether* and I laughed for 16 weeks. He is an unfortunate soul. Many many years ago DS dropped a poo on the stairs & DH didn't see it and trod in it. He was traumatised and kept saying over and over "And it was still WARM..."

I love him really.

This is my dds rotten pea Grin we also have the sponge she shoved up her nose in a container somewhere. I'm saving them for her wedding day, to embarrass her.
