To not take DS(7) to A&E because he has a foil confetti star stuck up his nose

dougierose · 07/03/2015 22:00

Yesterday I heard DS snorting and blowing his nose. It transpired that he had shoved a foil star (from a confetti bomb) up his nose. Actually, it didn't go up far enough the first time, so he pulled it out and then gave it a right shove, then discovered that he could't get it out.

Last night he said that he could mildly feel the star, then this morning he said that he couldn't feel it at all. I think it might have worked its way down his nasal passage and hopefully will have gone into his stomach with the expected result.

I've asked friends what to do and there's been a mixed response between trying to tweeze it out (NOOOOOOOOOOOOO), trying to make him sneeze - and then right up to taking him to A&E.

He can breathe, eat, swallow, talk moan as usual so he's obviously feeling OK. However I've also been told by a medic that if it hasn't come out within a day or so then I SHOULD take him to A&E.....

Apart from the 4 hour wait, I don't want to clog up A&E with something fairly minor - but then again, the foil star has quite sharp edges and it might scratch something internally on its way through...

What do you think?

PS this is true, not a joke/troll post.

My ds did this at with a piece of shiny foil paper when he was about the same age.

I took him to the GP who couldn't reach it so advised me to take him to a&e. They managed to get it out after ds sneezed and dislodged it a bit. I think they don't like to leave it because it can be inhaled into the lung

Silvercatowner · 07/03/2015 22:59

My DS did this with a lump of sweetcorn. We were advised it was an emergency because of the risk of inhaling it.

IfMaybeBut · 07/03/2015 23:06

I'm normally of the "don't go to A&E" advice type. However I absolutely agree with Country...unless you can get him to snort it out by blowing hard down his nostril he need to go to A&E (which is like the direst hellhole on a Saturday night so go in the morning)

dougierose · 07/03/2015 23:06
Shock Shock Shock

And there was I thinking that my friend who told me to go to A&E was being a bit melodramatic.

Shock

Fckkkk I feel like I'm a really bad mother now.

DH has also suggested you could first try to blow it out. Cover his mouth (or get him to close it tight) and blow hard up the non-sparkly nostril to see if it comes out the other.

I promise this is true! This is the first thing they will get you to try in A&E.

OvertiredandConfused · 07/03/2015 23:10

My niece stuffed loo roll up her nose when she was with her dad. He forgot to mention it to my sister. Few days later, niece started with a runny nose, then disgusting green smelly discharge Sad. She need up having a general anaesthetic to remove it.

Cleanbean · 07/03/2015 23:10

I took DD to our walk in clinic with a pea up her nose. They wouldn't even look at it and sent us straight to A+E as they said there was a risk of inhaling it.

emwithme · 07/03/2015 23:10

I once got a bead stuck up my nose. I was wondering what the area of my nostril was and thought I'd use my beads to check (If the bead fit perfectly, I'd then measure it, was my thought process). The blue bead did fit perfectly (the red one was too big and the green one too small) but then I sniffed, and the bead went in. I then tried to get it out with my fingers but ended up poking it further in. It then got stuck.

I had to confess later that evening when my mum told me off for snort-wheezing at the dinner table. She got her tweezers out, pulled the bead out and told me off.

A week later we were at the doctors because I was having ear-issues. The doctor looked in, then got the tweezers and pulled the green bead out, along with a load of gooey ear wax.

CountryPlumpkin · 07/03/2015 23:15

You are not a bad mother OP! They see this sort of thing in A&E all the time Smile

AgentZigzag · 07/03/2015 23:18

Don't feel bad OP you posted on AIBU, what did you expect it's one of those things like when you're trying to decide whether they're ill enough to stay off school or not, it's a hard call to make.

You've decided to do something now so no need to beat yourself up about it too Smile

dougierose · 07/03/2015 23:19

Thank you Country - although I feel like crying now Sad

Anyway, I'm logging off now as I'll be getting up at 6am to take him to A&E (along with another of these blasted stars which keep reappearing, the sodding things).

Thank you for all your comments everyone

xx

not giving him breakfast will concentrate his mind on not putting anything up his bloody nose again.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 08/03/2015 00:21

Oh good luck op, so tough to know really...

watchingthedetectives · 08/03/2015 00:33

Agree with Flagon and Country - close the other nostril over and blow sharply into his mouth (you have to make a seal over his mouth) - worked brilliantly for a stuck cocoa pop don't ask

PrettyFeet · 08/03/2015 00:40

No you aren't a bad mother at all, you just aren't a drama lama.

My DS was having an anaphylactic shock and I thought he was showing off.

He broke his foot and I sent him to cadets saying "if its broken now, then it will be broken at 9 when I pick you up"

In my defence, he did tell me to call an ambulance when he had a cold due to him not being able to breathe.

giraffesNeedBigPoloNecks · 08/03/2015 02:27

hope they get it out

cinders456 · 08/03/2015 07:05

My ds (aged 5 at the time) swallowed a 2p coin Shock.. Kids, hey!

kelda · 08/03/2015 07:11

Hope it gets sorted today.

If it's quite light and stuck, it might not come out with blowing into his mouth as others have suggested.

knackered69 · 08/03/2015 07:13

My Ds1 ate my contact lenses...Blush

cinders456 · 08/03/2015 07:20

And my other ds (at the age of 4) decided to eat the WHOLE boiled egg, shell included. Weird.

Nativity3 · 08/03/2015 07:21

Hope they see you quickly op :)

SummerHouse · 08/03/2015 07:25

FlowersFlowersFlowers

You are a brilliant mother. I totally understand this dilemma. I don't think my instinct would have been to take him.

Come back and let us know. Hope they get it and then its sorted. My feeling is its been digested.

Some people on threads like this are a bit.... -Sanctimonious- over the top about health related issues.

NobodyLivesHere · 08/03/2015 07:26

If it makes you feel any better OP my dd shoved a tiny screw up her nose, we went to a&e who got it out and she wanted to keep it. So we did. Then, SHE SHOVED IT BACK UP THERE. So back we went.

EveBoswell · 08/03/2015 07:53

If you go to A&E, take a loose star with you so they know what they're looking for.
