No nudity policy

At the swimming pool today I noticed a sign in the ladies changing room/showers stating that they had received "feedback" from customers concerned about nudity in the presence of children and so they now have a policy of no nudity in the changing rooms during lessons and minimal nudity at other times.

Now I'm not usually one to strip off in communal areas and generally feel more comfortable in a cubicle so I don't feel personally attacked but WIBU to provide my own feedback that I am happy for whatever level of nudity people require to change after swimming to continue and that I am happy for my children to witness naked women in this environment where applicable.

I didn't say anything but it has annoyed me all day. I have no idea if a similar policy is in force in the mens changing room.

"I do think that in a public changing room some attempt at discretion should be made."

Why, though? Why should I hold on to my towel to cover my bum while my breasts are bare, then make sure I cover my breasts while my bum is bare, in order to avoid total nudity: "Oh my God, another adult woman in this woman-only space where people are getting changed might see my fanjo and my breasts AT THE SAME TIME thus making me shamefully naked rather than partially naked but making an effort to hide the DIRTY DIRTY BITS." It's not like I'm all "wahey, I'm in the changing room, I'm going to parade myself around a bit so strange women and children are forced to look at my c-section scar, might shake my breasts in their face a bit and wiggle my belly at them", I just consider it much the same as getting dressed in my house.

Does anyone (other than the mysterious offended on behalf of their children) actually get upset/offended/shocked by seeing another woman naked? I really couldn't care less.

Samcro · 06/03/2015 16:22

can I be a prude?
i have managed to get to a ripe old age with out flashing my body in a changing room and would rather not.
I don't get why people are so keen to do so.

leedy · 06/03/2015 16:25

I'm not "keen to do so", I just don't care. As I said above, I'm probably totally naked for about ten seconds and it's the fastest/easiest way to get into my swimsuit and/or get dressed without having to think about whether I'm being "decent" in the process. I might feel different in a mixed-sex changing room but I'm perfectly comfortable doing so in a women's changing room.

According to DP the men's changing room features both nudity and bodybuilder types guzzling protein shakes and preening in the mirror at how "ripped" they are.

caryam · 06/03/2015 16:25

Samcro - I have never seen a woman parading herself in communal changing rooms. I would find that strange. I have seen plenty of women not totally cover themselves as they dry themselves.
And try and dry a woman who is confined to a wheelchair without some partial nudity as I have as a carer. Totally impossible.

Samcro · 06/03/2015 16:27

i do that most days, I am a carer. but i use the disabled facilities when she is with me.

caryam · 06/03/2015 16:29

Lucky you to have access to those.

Samcro · 06/03/2015 16:32

i plan it that way, take her to a pool with good disabled facilities.

ObsidianEagle · 06/03/2015 16:34

Lucky? Oh yes, she is soooo lucky she has a disabled Ds who entitles her to the facilities.

Seriously? Wtf?

ObsidianEagle · 06/03/2015 16:34

Dd bloody autocorrect!

ObsidianEagle · 06/03/2015 16:36

If your pool doesn't have decent disabled facilities surely its breaking the law?

ThereIsACarInTheKitchen · 06/03/2015 16:46

What does "parading around" actually mean? I've heard it before when the topic of being naked in changing rooms is brought up but I haven't got a clue what it means.

squoosh · 06/03/2015 16:47

'Parading around' generally means not being as prudish as the person who uses the phrase 'parading around'.

leedy · 06/03/2015 16:48

:)

Though I'd like to think it probably involves a brass band and a boob-shaking strut, possibly with one of those twirling batons.

I think it may be related to "ostentatiously breastfeeding".

leedy · 06/03/2015 16:49

[plans giant neon sign to bring to changing room for next "parading around", reading "LOOK, I AM IN THE NIP!"]

ThereIsACarInTheKitchen · 06/03/2015 16:49

Everyone is the changing room in my leisure centre just gets showered/dried/changed. Nobody is ever naked for more than a couple of minutes, tops. Don't think I've seen anyone strut around or parade around or whatever...or maybe they do but because I have no idea what those things actually mean I just don't notice it.

ThereIsACarInTheKitchen · 06/03/2015 16:50

In, not is.

caryam · 06/03/2015 16:50

What I meant is not all pools have separate disabled changing rooms for adults. But it does have a hoist to get into the pool. Many pools don't have that

caryam · 06/03/2015 16:52

I was talking in reference to having to use communal changing rooms for women to dry and change a woman I have helped care for. I know from these threads that some places seem to have way better facilities than the Council provides where I live. We have a lot of very old leisure centres with ancient facilities

Sallyingforth · 06/03/2015 18:16

I don't get why people are so keen to do so.

Whoever in this thread has said they are keen to be seen naked?

It just happens that part/all of the body becomes temporarily uncovered whilst changing. There is no sensible reason to change any differently in a pool or gym changing room to doing it at home. It's just a body FFS, and everyone has one.

Middlerose · 06/03/2015 18:18

Oh dear. I used to live in Asia (Japan and Korea), where it is compulsory to get naked in the bath houses/ spas...

Why can't people separate nudity and sex?

hestialou · 06/03/2015 18:32

Political correctness gone mad! I don't flaunt myself at gym but not obsessive on covering up, surely sending wrong message somehow? KimK and other celebs half naked in press but a female changing room not ok?

Gileswithachainsaw · 06/03/2015 18:45

No one's said they are keen.

just that they don't worry about a fee seconds of being naked whilst changing or getting dcs changed.

I'd like to know Wtf these kids are being taught at home if traumatised by a glimpse of a breast or penis.

Mrsbird311 · 06/03/2015 19:52

Oh dear we seem as a nation to be getting rather fucked up, it's ok for various pop stars to writhe around in barely a thong on telly but a proper normal woman getting changed in a changing room is some how going to send the kids into a screaming hysterical frenzy, the madness has to stop we all have bodies , kids know what all the bits look like do I'm sure they won't keel over in shock, can't we just teach kids that naked bodies are normal . I would boycott any swimming pool that introduced such twattery

SuperMumTum · 06/03/2015 20:23

Thanks for your views everyone. Its a topic I've seen before on MN but never really thought about in depth. The pool in question is an old edwardian baths with limited space but the changing rooms were upgraded only a couple of years ago. Theres a big cubicle for disabled people and a few others but otherwise its open plan Its popular with families and schools but never massively busy as there are much more modern pools not far away. I've been there loads and never noticed anyone flaunting themselves or doing anything other than getting dressed or undressed and minding their own business. I am actually 8 months pregnant atm and my towel does not cover much up any more so perhaps its the sight of my "accidental" nudity thats upsetting the children!! Either way I will say something as I think this does have wider consequences such as those mentioned here about being normal anf sensible about everyday nudity and not sexualising humans, especially children, unnecessarily. The point about Kim kardashian getting naked and oiled on a magazine being somehow ok but a middle aged woman changing out of her cossie being inappropriate has really bothered me.

Bambambini · 06/03/2015 20:26

Ha, my mum gave me a little talking to when I came back from a swimming outing with my sister and her kids. Seems I was flaunting myself as I quickly got dressed (literally seconds) in the ladies communal area (thought I'd leave the few cubicles to those who do care) and didn't do the towel dance as I find that more embarrassing than a few seconds of flesh. My sister had cliped on me for being a floosie!
