Is any there anything legally / morally wrong with this? I would save almost 50 just for a short walk..

I rent where I can afford and that happens to be in a street of terraced houses. I don't expect to be able to park outside my own house or necessarily anywhere near it. If I come home late in the evening and have to park in the next street that's what I have to do. I don't think it would be unreasonable to be pissed off if I had to do that for two weeks because someone as selfish as the OP and others like her thought it was ok to use residential streets for extended periods of time to save money. As for "too tight to buy a house with a driveway" I would submit that "too tight to pay for parking" is a far more reasonable position.

Stinkle · 06/03/2015 12:33

My mum lives right next to an airport and the local council have clamped right down on parking.

She lives in a residential street, that doesn't have any parking restrictions, but the amount of people dumping their cars for 2 weeks got ridiculous and quite frankly, dangerous - emergency vehicles couldn't get up the road, etc

They have a special number to phone and the council come and tow them away. Taxi companies won't pick you up without an address and if the driver doesn't see you actually coming out of the house they won't take you.

There's a country lane that leads into the back of the airport with lots of lay-by sand cars are towed if they're left there too.

I wouldn't assume that just because it's a public road, you'll come back to your car after 2 weeks away

The demographic on mumsnet seems largely very wealthy. To a small part of the population £50 is not much. To most people, it is a lot of money.

Andrewofgg · 06/03/2015 12:40

GratefulHead I put my family ahead of my neighbours and that is wrong because . . . do tell.

I had the keys in case the alarm went, but if there had been nobody at home that would have been JTB till one of us got home. Same as on our own car.

SirChenjin · 06/03/2015 12:41

Ironic last post there Countess. Does "holier than thou spouters who love to spend their time telling other people what's wrong with them" extend to people who tell others to get a fucking life or a hobby - or only people who disagree with you?

I cannot for the life of me imagine going to this effort just to save £50 over the course of two weeks, which adds up to the princely sum of approx £3.50 a day

A two mile walk each way isn't much effort for a lot of people. It's only 20-30 minutes each way. If you were being paid minimum wage you would have to work most of a day to earn £50

SirChenjin · 06/03/2015 12:43

I don't believe your claim that slashed tyres/bent windscreens wouldn't bother you suzzie - to replace them would cost you a hell of a lot more than the 50 quid you say you can't afford.

ilovesooty · 06/03/2015 12:43

caryam what about the poster who's so wealthy she thinks it's ok to criticise people for being "too tight" to buy a house with off road parking?

anotherdayanothersquabble · 06/03/2015 12:52

I am still stuck on the street full of Terrorists.... ??

GratefulHead · 06/03/2015 12:52

As I said, it wasn't a go at you per se, just that your comment which came across as very selfish and inconsiderate....lime many others on this thread. Yes you could at least have moved it if needed.

Just too bad if you are at work ...and no doubt if YOU are inconvenienced by the neighbours in the same way you will equally suck it up.

Two mile walk with baggage, though! Anyway, she's already booked flights - don't most people factor in the cost of transport to/from the airport when they're doing that? She's no doubt perfectly entitled to park wherever she wishes legally, just seems an awful faff and wouldn't occur to me. Fortunately we're all different Smile

AvonCallingBarksdale · 06/03/2015 12:56

bold failure tsk

stubbornstains · 06/03/2015 13:04

Thinking more of parking in Bristol and just getting the expensive airport bus.

I'd do that. Less pearl clutchers and territorial sniffing, TBH. Plus, you can park miles away from the airport, so there won't be many others doing it....Like I said, many of the neighbourhoods between the airport and the centre on that side are a little bit scuzzy, but on the plus side it means that nobody will give a toss. Just give yourself plenty of time to cruise around and find the perfect parkup (yess, not immediately in front of someone's terraced house, yadda yadda).

suzzieanneba46 · 06/03/2015 13:07

No I would mind the tires being slashed, I wouldn't mind the keying.

50 quid tax free for ah hours walk with a medium sized bag is alot of money for me.

I have just had a look on streetview. There are places to park close by where you wouldn't be causing any problems and are really close. What about Oatfield?

ilovesooty · 06/03/2015 13:23

Since the OP has made her mind up, doesn't give a shit about any inconvenience she causes and has even received validation from similarly minded people I'd like to know what more she wants from this thread?

suzzieanneba46 · 06/03/2015 13:25

Can you post the street view cow? Thanks

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 06/03/2015 13:34

Explain the logic behind that suzzie. You can't afford 50 quid for a taxi but you can afford the cost of 4 new tyres and a 2 new wipers?

ilove - I quite agree. OP - what exactly do you want from this thread now?

Faithless · 06/03/2015 13:36

If it's Manchester Airport, you can park at mine, I won't mind!

SnottyCowbag · 06/03/2015 13:39

Here is a streetview screenshot. The houses have parking and are only on one side of the street. It's not like a terraced street at all. I don't think it would selfish to park there at all. I can't see how it would impact on the resident at all.

I wouldn't worry about damage to the car. Its not impossible that it might happen but It's unlikely.

to park my car on a residential street for two weeks and walk two miles to the airport
SirChenjin · 06/03/2015 13:43

That would absolutely piss those residents off. It's a quiet estate with driveways - anyone who wakes up to a strange car parked up outside their house with no explanation as to why or how long is going to feel pretty ticked off, I should imagine.

If you are going to treat their street like a car park, at least make sure it's not outside someone's property.

caryam · 06/03/2015 13:46

I find that attitude really strange. I get strange cars parking outside of my house. An inconvenience yes, but they have a right to park there. People are wierd

atomich01 · 06/03/2015 13:46

My sister lives near an airport, and yes there's a is a special number for residents to phone for cars that are just left outside their houses.

I'm assuming as you'd happily do it to someone else (when you don't know whether they have problems parking, multiple kids to ferry round, physical problems thmselves etc etc) You'd be happy to have my car dumped outside your house for 2 weeks?? VERY unreasonable imo.

SirChenjin · 06/03/2015 13:51

Here's a novel idea.

Presuming that the OP isn't one of those people who simply cries "my rights, my rights" and actually thinks to consider the residents of the houses in the street she plans to use as a free car park for 2 weeks, perhaps she could knock on a few doors and find out if anyone is happy for her to dump her car outside their house for a fortnight?

That way there will be no more uncertainty or second guessing.

SnottyCowbag · 06/03/2015 13:52

I get thst people shouldn't park dangerously so as to prevent emergency vehicles etc and I can understand that it would be irritating not to be able to find a parking spot outside your own house but I don't get that people would be irritated just because they can SEE a parked car?
