to be posed that the council has put up normal gym membership 10% but left all the discounted ones alone leaving mugs like me to sub them

Gym membership has now gone up from 40 to 44. But what really pissed me off is saying in the letter that they are happy that discounted rates will remain unchanged.

I don't mind subing other peoples membership if they need it, but most of the people I know get discounted membership even though they have more money than me. Discounted membership is given to all 60+ that seems a bit strange as this isn't retirement age and not really that old. My parents both get this 25% discount and they don't need it at all. Its also given to professionals in the nearby office as they have some corporate scheme.

Pissed!

Go and join a different gym then. Envy isn't an attractive quality.

londonrach · 04/03/2015 19:47

Yabu join another gym if you worried you find it alot more expensive!

Remind · 04/03/2015 19:55

You're not really subbing them though. The 60+ probably spend more in the café or use the gym less on average. There will be research...

If you're happy with the gym £44 isn't bad. If you think you're not getting value for money cancel.

ilovesooty · 04/03/2015 20:00

Doubt if you'll find a private gym any cheaper. How do you know all about other people's finances and that they have more money than you anyway?

daisychain01 · 04/03/2015 20:01

If you are only talking about a difference of £4, then YABU. Why bother?

suzzieanneba46 · 04/03/2015 20:04

I am subbing them the letter made that clear that the increased price will go towards them not having to raise the discounted price.

There is no other gym in the area to join.

Was talking to people in the sauna about it and people unanimously agreed it was unfair even though the vast majority were 60+.

threepiecesuite · 04/03/2015 20:04

This would piss me off too. Put all the rates up, or none.

suzzieanneba46 · 04/03/2015 20:05

That's almost 50 quid a year post tax, its a lot for some.

Oh I see. Another baby boomer bashing thread.
Just cancel your membership if it bothers you that much.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2015 20:11

YANBU. Think all these discounts should be raised to age 68+.

Remind · 04/03/2015 20:12

If it's really the only gym in the area, you're very fortunate it's so cheap. If I was providing financial advice to the council, I'd be telling them to put their prices up considerably in order to keep the council tax down or spend on other services facing cuts!

PureMorning · 04/03/2015 20:16

Its £4....

Pico2 · 04/03/2015 20:16

The discounts to office workers are probably paid for either by the business/landlord or effectively creating a "off-peak" usage as they won't use it much at weekends.

ilovesooty · 04/03/2015 20:16

Actually expat I agree. I bet the OP would still reckon they had more money than she has though.

ghostyslovesheep · 04/03/2015 20:19

well don't pay then - blimey four whole pounds - go jogging instead

mickeyfartpants · 04/03/2015 20:26

So the over 60's shouldn't get a discount because they aren't retired yet? YABU. Some of them will be going to pilates and other activities that are good for core muscles and joints, just because they aren't retired yet doesn't mean they shouldn't get an incentive to stay active.

Our local gym is £78 a month. Hmm Should I bemoan you for having a local gym that's cheaper than mine?

KittensOnAPlane · 04/03/2015 20:31

78??? Bloody hell

I only go to the work one as it's £10 a month... no pool though

??

VodkaJelly · 04/03/2015 21:05

Bloody hell and I was moaning about paying £28 a month for my council gym, sounds like it is a bargain, but then I used to go to simply gym and it cost me £17 a month, no way would i pay £44.

Mrsstarlord · 04/03/2015 21:15

Bloody hell! £78 per month???

I think £44 is a lot of money. At a push I'd pay £30 but tbh I'd rather go for a run or do some yoga at home.

FWIW I think our council gym is far less. I used to pay £40 for gym membership for me and the 2 kids, choice of about 4 gyms and swimming pools and all the classes for all of us.

daisychain01 · 04/03/2015 22:01

people unanimously agreed it was unfair good, nice to know you reached consensus.

Life isn't fair, I'd get used to it if I were you.

SaucyJack · 04/03/2015 22:06

£44 isn't cheap at all!

mickeyfartpants · 04/03/2015 22:09

Its a Lloyds. I never joined, I phoned to ask the cost and that's just OFF PEAK! Shock

peutetre · 04/03/2015 22:13

Sympathy from me - would definitely be pissed off too. Should be all or nothing.

bigbluestars · 04/03/2015 22:14

It is in the governments interests to keep people active and fit as they age.
The more over 60s at the gym, the less it costs the NHS and ultimately all of us.
