To ask any supermarket workers what I should do now?

I've got home from a supermarket shop and realised that I haven't been charged for an item. If it was a couple of quid discrepancy (either in my favour or against it) I would just ignore it but it's a 10 pound bottle of alcohol. I'm happy to go back in and pay it but only when I am next doing a shop (in a week or two) due to the store's location. So my questions are:

  1. What do I need to do? If I ring/e-mail them now, can they insist that I pay it sooner? Will I need to bring the bottle with me or can I just say that I owe 10 pounds and they'll charge it to my card, no questions asked?

  2. Will the checkout person get in trouble if I raise it? I suppose there's no point bringing in the receipt to demonstrate that I didn't pay for it but, if I use the same store card (which I would prefer to because I get a discount with it) will they trace it back to who last took a payment with the card - or will they not care that much?

Or should I just give 10 pounds to charity and forget about the whole thing?

Just drink the alcohol & forget about it Smile

  1. do a happy dance at the fact that you have a free bottle of booze?
upsetagain · 03/03/2015 21:21

Why don't you phone the head office and ask them?

FuckyNell · 03/03/2015 21:22

Christ just drink it :)

DextersMistress · 03/03/2015 21:23

I'd be too drunk to worry by now Wink

usualsuspect333 · 03/03/2015 21:23

Just drink it. They will think you are bonkers if you go back and pay for it.

WorraLiberty · 03/03/2015 21:26

People only on Mumsnet seem to worry too much about these things.

Think how many bottles get broken across a chain of supermarkets from delivery to the shelves?

Just drink it and be more careful in future to check your receipt.

Swings and roundabouts, what goes around comes around, and all that. Drink the stuff, I am sure you have been overcharged for something in the past somewhere.

Although a few £ in a charity bucket would be an awfully nice gesture!

The store will think you are bonkers if you try to pay.

But if you need to ease your conscience, I would phone the store and tell them first. I very much doubt anyone will get in to trouble if you don't take your original receipt in with you.

Cheesymonster · 03/03/2015 21:31

I did this with a bottle of wine. DH went back later that day to pay and got a bollocking from Tesco for not bringing the bottle back so they could scan the barcode.

Blimey, just drink it and think no more about it.

I am sure you spend enough of your hard earned cash with said supermarket chain, just as most of us do too. Don't feel guilty.

wowfudge · 03/03/2015 22:11

If you ring them to fess up, they will probably thank you for your honesty and tell you to have it on them on this occasion.

youngestisapyscho · 03/03/2015 22:14

Really?!

iknowimcoming · 03/03/2015 22:22

Mate of mine works in v naice supermarket and the stories she tells me about shoplifters would make your hair curl and the store just accepts it as they feel having alarms on the door will ruin the ambience of their stores Confused people literally fill trolleys with booze and then walk out of the shop, staff are not allowed to challenge them if they see it in case of being hurt and they only have security staff occasionally. Ergo this was an honest mistake and the shop won't give a rats even if they knew which they won't so think of it like winning a scratch card and don't give it another thought Wine

Sandybananapants · 03/03/2015 22:23

If it were me, by now I'd be too sozzled to care : )

teenagetantrums · 03/03/2015 22:24

I work in a supermarket please just drink it is far to much hassle
if you being it back.

thatstoast · 03/03/2015 22:27

I have worked in retail. Nobody in the supermarket cares, please don't bother them about it.

catzpyjamas · 03/03/2015 22:33

If you take it back with your receipt, isn't there a chance that the cashier who served you will get into trouble for not charging you? Save a minimum wage worker the grief, drink the bottle and pay it forward the next time someone rattles a collection tin in front of you Daffodil
(Unless you used self scan in which case it's the scale/till thing's fault and you can drink it guilt free as technology isn't subject to disciplinary procedures)

cariadlet · 03/03/2015 22:39

If you'd bought the wine from a small independent shop, then I'd say go back and repay what you owed. But supermarkets make millions in profit every year. They wouldn't miss one bottle. But it shows what a decent person you are to even think about it.
