to think I will never be free from this person

NC for this as it will totally out me.

For the last eight years we have been getting calls for a Mr , these calls have been made by women, men, english and foreign but they never disclose which company they are calling from or show a number. Despite telling these people that Mr has never lived in our house and being promised to have this name removed from their records, the calls continued.

Now we have moved 300 hundred miles away and have a completely different area code and number we breathed a sigh of relief that we would no longer be bothered by these calls.

Imagine my horror when two days after our phone line going live I received a call for Mr *** followed by another one the next day.

How the feck can this be happening?

That's creepy.

Rinoachicken · 03/03/2015 18:50

Identity theft?

angelohsodelight · 03/03/2015 18:51

Get a whistle to hand when they call. Sounds like someone doesn't like you.

OttiliaVonBCup · 03/03/2015 18:51

Are you getting the calls on your landline?
Despite moving and changing it, I presume?

This is very odd.

Rinoachicken · 03/03/2015 18:52

Have you tried googling the persons name?

angelohsodelight · 03/03/2015 18:54

Tell them that phone is being monitored and wil have been keeping a diary of these calls and they can expect an invoice in due course

LadyFlumpalot · 03/03/2015 18:54

Ooooh, I don't like that. Very creepy sounds like someone who has your number is giving it out.

Mrscherrycake · 03/03/2015 18:55

Yes, its our landline.

Not tried googling it as they never give a first name, its always Mr ***.

So far we have only given the number to friends and family and every time we get a call its a different person.

Mrscherrycake · 03/03/2015 18:56

Good idea Angel I will try anything!

I would go along with it, get Dh/p to pretend to be Mr* to try to discover more.

How very unsettling though Confused

Fabulassie · 03/03/2015 18:57

I'm marking my place on this thread because it's fascinating... I wish I had some insight to what is going on.

SaucyJack · 03/03/2015 18:59

It's probably something really boring like an automatic update to your number going to his account as well.

AwfulBeryl · 03/03/2015 18:59

Is it for Mr White ?
I think it's a scam, possibly fishing ? Phishing ?
I have lots of calls for a Mr White, occasionally they ask if we would be interested in a loan, they manage to slip it In to conversation.
I also get loads of texts from loan companies for a Racheal, they're from different companies so it looks like it's just a default name they use to try and wheel you in.

APlaceInTheWinter · 03/03/2015 18:59

I'm guessing you've tried asking for a supervisor or pretending you are going to get the person they are asking for to see if you can find out more? If so, then next time they call say you're keeping a diary of all the calls and will report them for harrassment. Confused

OrinocoTheWomble · 03/03/2015 19:00

Could it be one of your friends or family making the calls...?

But agree with ChocolateCherry about going along with it.

Rinoachicken · 03/03/2015 19:00

I'd be tempted to google 'nuisance calls for Mr xyz' just to see if it's a know scam - abit like the 'whose calling me from 123456789' where you can find out what spammy company keeps calling you 598 times a day!

BalloonSlayer · 03/03/2015 19:01

I expect one of your family or one of your friends is doing this as a joke. Every so often they get someone at their work or a friend to "ring this number and ask for Mr xx."

Far fetched? Check out the Christmas "Janet and Roy" threads. It's not all that different.

AwfulBeryl · 03/03/2015 19:02

Oh and we have changed numbers, but still got the Mr White calls.

Mrscherrycake · 03/03/2015 19:02

Not Mr White, its a fairly unusual name though.

I got quite angry at the last call so maybe there wont be anymore as if. If I find out anymore I'll let you know.

Royalsighness · 03/03/2015 19:05

What are the Janet and Roy threads?

AwfulBeryl · 03/03/2015 19:07

I now answer the phone with "Berryls crematorium, you Kill em, we grill em"
It works, they usually hang up Grin

TidyDancer · 03/03/2015 19:08

I get texts making dentists appointments for someone but I think it's because it was a number previously assigned to someone else. This is just plain weird though.

Mrscherrycake · 03/03/2015 19:09

No results on google and I dont think it would be any of our family or friends as we only told a couple of people, we just assumed the calls would stop when we moved. Although it was a nuisance it never really upset us but its just making me angry now.

BalloonSlayer · 03/03/2015 19:11

They are when someone sends a Christmas card to someone else (usually their parents) from "Janet and Roy" sometimes with a round robin letter attached, for the purposes of being amused by watching the recipients trying to remember who the hell Janet and Roy are.

This practice is popular on Mumset at Christmas, with Mumsnetters offering to send "Janet and Roy" cards to other Mumsnetters' parents so that the handwriting/postmark doesn't give the game away.

All fun and fairly harmless, I guess (unless you suspect you are in the early stages of dementia, have told no one and are very worried and embarrassed and analysing your every memory lapse with great anxiety). I could see that someone could think something like this was just as funny.

taxi4ballet · 03/03/2015 19:12

I know a real, genuine bona-fide couple called Janet and Roy!
