NC for this as it will totally out me.

For the last eight years we have been getting calls for a Mr , these calls have been made by women, men, english and foreign but they never disclose which company they are calling from or show a number. Despite telling these people that Mr has never lived in our house and being promised to have this name removed from their records, the calls continued.

Now we have moved 300 hundred miles away and have a completely different area code and number we breathed a sigh of relief that we would no longer be bothered by these calls.

Imagine my horror when two days after our phone line going live I received a call for Mr *** followed by another one the next day.

How the feck can this be happening?

sorry

You can bar the number, even if is has been withheld

Mrscherrycake · 03/03/2015 20:12

Oldraver can they just bar this number or will it bar all withheld numbers?

Actress with initials DW used to be in eastenders

PurpleCrazyHorse · 03/03/2015 20:59

Just a word of caution, some hospitals dial out using a withheld number which can mean you don't get calls you want. We had a number of problems with this and not many staff have NHS mobiles to call patients on either, in these cases the patients missed being called about appointments.

If you're going to block withheld numbers on your landline, make sure the important people/services also have an up-to-date mobile number (that doesn't have these numbers blocked) so you can be contacted.

Musicaltheatremum · 03/03/2015 21:03

As a GP we withhold our number but if you dial 1470 in front of the number you are dialling it lets it through.

ihatethecold · 03/03/2015 21:03

Cheers bruffin.
I don't watch eastenders. Never mind!

Galvanized · 03/03/2015 21:04

Balloon's post above is the only one that makes sense, sorry OP. I hope BT can help.

Change numbers again?

ZebraLovesKnitting · 03/03/2015 21:12

We used to get calls all the time for a Mr Wildgoose. I eventually got it out of them that they were chasing somebody for debt. I then realised that they were basically on a "Wild goose chase", and told them so the next time they called. Haven't had another call since!

ptumbi · 03/03/2015 21:24

I once got nuisance calls from some zero who would phone in the morning, mumbling about 'what are you wearing' and suchlike. After a week of putting the phone on the side so he could mumble himself out, I phoned BT and they give you a code (IIRC) which you can input when the arse phoned again. This would enable them to stop the phonecall at the exchange - even though they didn't know the number it came from.

No more problem.
Don't know if they would do this for cold calling.

kittensinmydinner · 03/03/2015 21:24

BT have a nuisance call line. You have more than enough evidence to contact them. They will get to the bottom of this and SORT IT !!!

BlinkAndMiss · 03/03/2015 21:31

Change your number again, give it out to friends over a period of time. When the calls start back up then you'll have your suspect.

MsVestibule · 03/03/2015 21:36

This sounds creepy, I would be quite freaked out by it. If you're with BT, have you contacted their nuisance call department for advice? I guess the other line providers have similar depts.

trashcanjunkie · 03/03/2015 21:52

Can you change your number to a premium rate line? That way you will make money every time they call. Somebody has actually really done it. I'm sure somebody more clever than me will be able to find a link online....

LadyFlumpalot · 03/03/2015 22:44

It could be someone you know signing up to a website like MyOffers or competition websites with your details and entering all the competitions. The caveat on these is that you are signing up to receive zillions of cold calls about services.

maddening · 03/03/2015 22:46

Say he is out and ask for a number for him to call back on- my dfiance can find out a number origin or trace it back to a company - if you get a number I could ask him to?

You haven't arranged for any call forwarding rom your old number or is it part of a switch over service perhaps?

Oceanpurple1 · 03/03/2015 23:04

Eight years? That would have driven me to insanity by now...
Sorry I can't suggest anything that hasn't been previously suggested by other posters. Sad I really hope you get to the bottom of this - it has gone on far too long.

SoleSource · 03/03/2015 23:12

Years ago I had a nuisance caller. Male voice, impersonating an Indian accent ad fake Indian language. This went on for weeks. Was creepy.

Fairenuff · 03/03/2015 23:13

Alternatively OP, just say "Yes, he's here, I'll just get him" then walk away and leave them hanging on the line. It's their money they are wasting, not yours.

QuintessentiallyInShade · 03/03/2015 23:17

Our Nemesis is Mr MacArthur.

Mrscherrycake · 04/03/2015 00:02

Glad I'm not the only one getting these calls although I sympathise with those that are. I just couldn't believe it when we got more of the same within two days of getting a new number and asking for the same person.

Thank you for all your helpful suggestions, will let you know if we get any more calls and if we get a resolution.

We were getting these calls asking for a certain woman. All different people some were even getting angry. This went on for years One call was from a man and I was a bit short with him until he said he was Sgt from the fraud squad. Some one was selling Tupperware fraudulently using my phone number. The calls did stop though.
Another was was the silence on the other end. I thought it might be kids so I told the the phone provider gave me there details and I had passed them on to the police ( not true). No More calls after that.

Mrscherrycake · 05/03/2015 13:25

An update!

Just had another call for Mr, this time from a lady with a foreign accent (this always make me think call centre), she kept asking if I had ever worked in a noisy environment which I thought was a bit odd as the call was for Mr and I am female!

Anyway, after the call ended I checked 1471 and there was a number which I googled and it was a hearing centre and has had several complaints surprise.

It must be coincidence that they are asking for the same name when they ring or maybe it is just a generic name they use.

So, mystery solved and I will now be asking BT to block calls from this number.

Did you pay for call divert when you moved?

I did this as i used the number for my business so could not take it with me, all calls to the old number were automatically diverted to the new number.
