My friend has brought her 3 year old a TV to have in his bedroom as a present. I think this is terrible! AIBU?

No, Sam. He prefers Coke in his JD.Grin

He has a mini fridge too. In fact I don't think he will ever move out Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 02/03/2015 21:52

Grin Bifs. It's always educational, at some point someone might say something new. Shock

usualsuspect333 · 02/03/2015 21:53

I thought the OP might be looking for advice as to which TV to buy.

Only1scoop · 02/03/2015 21:54

Usual x post

Great minds and all that

Samcro · 02/03/2015 21:55

see mine does't do alcohol (yep really)

Sparklingbrook · 02/03/2015 21:55

For a 3 year old I would go for a 55" one nailed to the wall opposite the bed.

Only1scoop · 02/03/2015 21:57

Spark.... I prefer the leatherette sleigh bed with the integrated 56 inch which rises out the end at the flick of a switch Blush

usualsuspect333 · 02/03/2015 21:58

I'd love one of them, Scoop.

When I win the lottery I'm buying one of those.

BloodyDogHairs · 02/03/2015 21:59

I quite often put my 2yr old in my room after dinner and let him watch cartoons, sometime I need a hour to myself and it's pure bliss. He isn't glued to it as I usually hear him annoying his 16yr old sister.

bingobingo · 02/03/2015 22:00

It is next to (and pointed at) his bed, and he sleeps terribly and demands to watch things at 2am (and they let him).

then thats a parenting problem, not a 'tv in the room' problem.

RocketInMyPocket · 02/03/2015 22:04

Poor child, only 3 years old and already has square eyes!

Seriously, my two are 3 and 5, share a room and have a TV in it.

We also play lots of games, read lots of stories, sing lots of songs etc.

I don't think it's a big deal.

bingobingo · 02/03/2015 22:05

Maybe more people have a tv in their room/multipe tvs than I imagined... I was surprised by the 3.5 hours a day average figure.

OP posts:
ObsidianEagle · 02/03/2015 22:14

both of my kids have tvs in their rooms, so they will sit quietly and watch it in the morning rather than making me get up at 6am when they're awake.

i can't think of a single occasion when either of them have asked to have it on in the middle of the night, because (Shock horror) i've never let them!

LaLyra · 02/03/2015 22:33

Does the child sleep badly and this is a last resort/sanity saver?

My DS doesn't need a lot of sleep. He's been poked and prodded by doctors galore and they are happy with his lack of sleep.

I can't function on 4/5 hours a night sleep long term. So he has a tv. He's 7 now and has had it for years. It's on a timer so that he can put it on at 6am when he's usually been awake for half an hour or so.

I'd rather be the shit parent whose kid has a tv in their room than the parent who crashed her car because she was exhausted.

What works for one family doesn't necessarily work for another.

DakotaFanny · 02/03/2015 22:38

Generally for kids- totally up to individual parents

Age 3- totally wrong!

ShadowSpiral · 02/03/2015 22:48

Personally I don't really approve of anyone having TVs in their bedrooms, regardless of their age.

Bedrooms are for sleeping and TVs disrupt sleep.

Plus, there's a lot of stuff on TV that's unsuitable for small children. Lots of unsuitable DVDs too if they get curious and help themselves to the parents DVDs. Our TV is downstairs in the living room so we can easily keep an eye on what the DC are watching.

Well, I'm 52 and I'm going to be buying a tv for my bedroom any day now. Cannot wait! Haven't had a tv in my bedroom since I moved to this house 11 years ago and I've really missed it.

Disapprove away until smoke comes out of your ears ShadowSpiral

TheFairyCaravan · 02/03/2015 23:02

I bloody love having a TV in my room, I wouldn't be without it. I had my first TV way back in 1984 when I was 13.

My kids have had teles in their rooms since they were about 5. They were connected to aerials so they could watch actual programmes. They've had laptops connected to the Internet for years and iPads for around 4 years.

TV is not a bad thing imo

dragdownthemoon · 03/03/2015 08:01

I'm not sure I follow why it is a bad thing. A tv in a 3yr old room is not a problem in itself. Shutting said 3yr old in their room with DVDs for 8 hours a day might be more of an issue. I don't understand why people assume the worst in these situations. Guns don't kill people and all that...

Morelikeguidelines · 03/03/2015 11:42

Ltb.

Clockingoff · 03/03/2015 12:47

YANBU. 3 year olds should not be sitting upstairs on their own watching telly. If they're watching with others surely downstairs telly will do?

kbbeanie · 03/03/2015 13:14

Ive learnt not to judge on this topic. I always vowed that ds (almost 3) would never have a tv in his room

That was until we realised he doesnt sleep ! Spent 6 months of which i was getting up with him at 6.30am....looking after him all day going to work at 5pm coming home at midnight and he still wasnt settling for sleep ....kept doing controlled crying and there was one night i sat the whole night and he did not close his eyes.

so we got a tv and dvd player....he now goes to bed at 7pm....picks his dvd and lies in bed and watches it and he falls asleep watching it usually before 7.30 latest 8pm and sleeps all night on any occassion he wakes in the night he presses the button to turn it on and hes asleep again within 5-10 mins

He still gets bedtime story etc read all before the tv goes on in his room it just seems he needs a bit of background noise to get him to sleep. We always used white noise when he was a baby because it worked and perhaps thats what he needs.

So for us the tv has totally saved my sanity

3 year olds should not be sitting upstairs on their own watching telly.

so what is it exactly you object to ?
Them:-

  1. being up stairs 2)being on their own
  2. watching TV
