To have gone back to sainsburys with a broken bottle.

On the way home from work on Friday, I popped into my local Sainsbury's only need 1 or 2 things, I bought a bottle of wine and some bread and a couple of other items, I split the items into 2 of there carrier bags 1 bottle of wine and the bread in one and the other items in the other.
On the way home the bag with the wine and bread split and the wine dropped to the floor and smashed.
I had not the best day and I think usually I would have left it but I was angry and I cant afford to waste a £6 (It was a good one on offer) So I went back to Sainsbury's with the broken bottle and split bag and asked for a new bottle. The lady on customer services didn't agree and thought that I should have doubled up the bag and said it was my fault. I explained that I had not overloaded the bags and they shouldn't split with just 2 items in.
I called for the duty manager and explained again what had happened he replaced the wine as a one off. I know the bags our flimsy but they should at least hold 2 items.
My friend thinks that it was my fault and that I shouldn't have gone back to Sainsbury's.
When I do a shop I usually take reusable bags with me, but this was a spur of the moment thing.

Not going to address your AIBU, but will say that the thread title is a little ambiguous Shock

Bailey101 · 02/03/2015 17:04

I would have done the same - if the bag they sold you split, they should be replacing the damaged goods.

youngestisapyscho · 02/03/2015 17:05

And always double bag in Sainsburys... Their bags are utter shit!

MartinJD · 02/03/2015 17:05

So you got your way and your still pondering on this? Be glad your wine bottle was replaced, stop wingeing and move on with your life.

Cheers!

DontOpenDeadInside · 02/03/2015 17:09

I keep wondering whether, once we have to pay for bags from October, they will still be as flimsy?
I don't think i would have had the guts to go back, but glad you did and got a new bottle.

livedtotellthetale · 02/03/2015 17:09

Martin JD I was asking if I was being AIBU, you don't have to be rude.

I would have gone back as well. In Scotland you have to pay for bags now and they're a bit more heavy duty than the old ones, but a bag should be strong enough to hold 2 items without splitting. You did the right thing, £6 is a lot of money to go down the drain.

RedSoloCup · 02/03/2015 17:16

The Sainsbury bags are terrible, I had one split on me when coming in from the car last week and there was hardly anything in it!!

YANBU!!!

MrsPresley · 02/03/2015 17:20

dontopen

Here in Scorland, Sainsburys have changed the bags. They're a Lot stronger and actually worth 5p.

More like the thickness you get when buying clothes.

YANBU - their bags should be able to hold a bottle of wine and a loaf of bread - this bag was defective so it's their fault it was broken.

RandomNPC · 02/03/2015 17:24

I think you were fully in your rights. One if the posters above is a proper wanker. I won't say which one, that'd be against MN policy I'm sure.

Cheers!

Fluffyears · 02/03/2015 17:25

The 5pence bags are better. Best carriers are the ones you buy from waitrose. Also you can pretend you usually shop in waitrose but are slumming it Grin

Horseradishes · 02/03/2015 17:25

Yabu. The reason the bags are so thin is to encourage people to use long life bags, which are much better for the environment. I wouldn't have put anything heavy like wine in a thin bag, I'd have carried by hand or spent 10p on a bag for life.

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/03/2015 17:28

Yanbu. A bag should he able to hold two fairly light items. maybe if enough people complain and did I what you did they may well start using a supplier that makes bags that at least make it to the car park.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 02/03/2015 17:28

There bags are awful. I now being my own. I once had one rip with one loaf of bread and a packet of bagels, it ripped as I picked it off the end of the thing to place into the trolley, the lady said the bread had sharp edges.

mousmous · 02/03/2015 17:28

yabu
just take canvas bags with you when you shop. no bursting bags and broken bottles and better for the environment too

Mousefinkle · 02/03/2015 17:31

Carrier bags are notoriously flimsy and shit. You should ALWAYS double bag if you have anything remotely heavy or breakable in them, definitely.

Personally I'd have bought a bag for life and if not definitely would have double bagged. Wine is heavy, carrier bags are shit so I'd say yabu.

I made a comment after going to sainsburys yesterday that the bags had gone crap, yanbu

YouAreAngryyyyyyyy · 02/03/2015 17:37

YANBU - I would have done the same.

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/03/2015 17:42

Are people really meant to carry re usable bags with them. on the off chance they fancy a bottle of wine on the way home from work.

I take them. With me for the weekly shop but it's not unreasonable to use bags provided if your just passing through surely Confused

SonnyJimBob · 02/03/2015 17:45

The see through Tesco bags are also shit. I have some from a decade ago, wrapped up holding bits and bobs that are still going strong. But the ones these days seem to disintegrate as you're walking home.
