To have gone back to sainsburys with a broken bottle.

On the way home from work on Friday, I popped into my local Sainsbury's only need 1 or 2 things, I bought a bottle of wine and some bread and a couple of other items, I split the items into 2 of there carrier bags 1 bottle of wine and the bread in one and the other items in the other.
On the way home the bag with the wine and bread split and the wine dropped to the floor and smashed.
I had not the best day and I think usually I would have left it but I was angry and I cant afford to waste a £6 (It was a good one on offer) So I went back to Sainsbury's with the broken bottle and split bag and asked for a new bottle. The lady on customer services didn't agree and thought that I should have doubled up the bag and said it was my fault. I explained that I had not overloaded the bags and they shouldn't split with just 2 items in.
I called for the duty manager and explained again what had happened he replaced the wine as a one off. I know the bags our flimsy but they should at least hold 2 items.
My friend thinks that it was my fault and that I shouldn't have gone back to Sainsbury's.
When I do a shop I usually take reusable bags with me, but this was a spur of the moment thing.

Omg I thought you went back in with a broken bottle as in to stab some one ....

having a stabby day myself

DamsonInDistress · 02/03/2015 18:01

Totally your own fault imo. Always double bag bottles of any description, including plastic.

Shinyshoes2 · 02/03/2015 18:06

I've done this . Also in sainsburys , it was literally as I left the store. They didn't dispute it , they just gave me another one. The bag had literally come away by the seam and you could tell it was defective it was big enough for the bottle to go through.
I now ALWAYS double bag wine

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/03/2015 18:28

she had 2 items for heavens sake. One of which was bread and weighs next to nothing. If she'd filled it with cans bottles and cartons I'd agree but a bag should hold a bottle of wine ffs.

londonrach · 02/03/2015 18:30

Yanbu i took a bottle of cava back to asda as when it was opened the whole top came off leaving a jagged end no way i was going to drink glass. Asda says its happens occasional in transit and replaced it.

mousmous · 02/03/2015 18:32

giles that's what those foldable canvass bags are for.

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/03/2015 18:46

But if someone's popping in on the way home as an after thought they aren't going to have one are they. and if like us you have a cupboard full of reusable bags you use for your usual shopping trip then your not going to fork out for another one.

A bag really should hold two items or what's the point of having them at all

Cakeybreakyheart · 02/03/2015 18:46

This happened to me recently, bottle fell through the bottom of the bag and smashed on the kitchen floor. It was the only thing in the bag. Couldn't be arsed to go back though, would have done if the store was closer.

londonrach Asda recalled some cava because of the tops of the bottles coming off recently, I saw a poster up in my local one.

londonrach · 02/03/2015 18:48

Cakey! Really! Its shattered and left a jagged end...

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 02/03/2015 18:54

CtrlAltDelicious I can see the grey highlighting too, have seen a couple of them today but not sure what it means.

PuppyMonkey · 02/03/2015 18:55

I think you should probably have taken more notice of how flimsy the bag was before you put a bottle of wine in. Wine is precious, you must look after it. Grin I think you were being a bit unreasonable but fair do's you got a replacement. His did you carry that one home ? Wink

QueenBean · 02/03/2015 18:56

NBU

That is what carrier bags are for. To carry stuff.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 02/03/2015 18:59

oh god I had one that split and broke a bottle of gin I cried never thought of going back Sad

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 02/03/2015 19:05

See, if you'd have opened it on the way home you would have been fine.

RandomNPC · 02/03/2015 19:59

CtrlAlt, it's because I'm very, very special.

Whippet81 · 02/03/2015 20:28

YANBU. Good on you.

Those bags are shit. My dog jumped up to say hello when I got back the other day - just scraped one of the bags I was carrying and the bloody thing fell to pieces. Unfortunately the washing liquid in it landed on my toe.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 02/03/2015 20:32

Plastic bags are shit, especially the ones from Sainsbods Waitrose double bag for you, you should have gone there. I'd be annoyed at the waste of wine. If I'm efficient laughs as it never happens I'd take a Jute one with me rather than use a free one. They are going to start charging for the free ones soon, aren't they?

Judydreamsofhorses · 02/03/2015 20:38

We have to pay for bags in Scotland now and Sainsbury's add a bag charge to online deliveries as standard, despite the fact most of the stuff comes loose rolling around in a crate. Things like wine, however, are bagged, and those bags are invariably split. The bags are crap. You are totally reasonable to go back to the shop.

I double up supermarket bags as standard, because I'm usually walking home. I don't appreciate getting glowered at by the staff either! If they still made plastic bags the way they used to, they would actually hold things properly.

livedtotellthetale · 02/03/2015 21:35

Thanks everyone, I know the bags are rubbish, thats why I only put two items in it. I used 3 bags on the way home. have now a reusable strong bag in my handbag for the emergency wine on the way home from work.

SgtBlousey · 02/03/2015 21:50

I dropped them an email once when the cardboard wine carrier I'd bought from them collapsed, and two - TWO - bottles of Cava were sacrificed to my front step (I think I actually cried a bit Blush ).

I only wanted to point out that the carriers were defective, but to their credit they not only refunded the cost of the booze, but they threw a few extra quid my way for my emotional trauma trouble.

alleypalley · 02/03/2015 21:51

YANBU. I would have gone back too, well depending on how far away from the shop I was, how lazy I was feeling, and how much I wanted wine.

Years ago I bought a litre bottle of vodka in duty free. I dropped the bag and broke the bottle but it was in one of those netty things so the bottle held together and I didn't notice until I had left a trail of vodka around Dubai airport. When on the plane I was recanting my tale of woe to the stewardess, just being chatty not expecting her to do anything. But a short while later she gave me a bottle free of charge from their duty free stash Smile

TheFairyCaravan · 02/03/2015 21:56

YANBU

I complained to Asda when the bag split and a jar of passatta went all over my kitchen floor. It wasn't in any way my fault because it was part of my online shop and they over packed the bag. IMO the driver shoukd have refunded it and I shouldn't have had to have phoned.

johngrady · 02/03/2015 22:12

I broke my toe when the arse fell out of a tesco bag and the bottle of prosecco landed on my foot.
I was both pleased and pissed off all at once Grin
