Sometimes there is a genuine reason not to pick up dog poo...

AIBU in thinking this? But it did occur to me the other day as I was walking to work and narrowly avoided a dog turd, that sometimes some people might not actually be able to pick up dog poo. What if they are blind or partially sighed for instance or a wheel chair user with a severe disability and physically therefore unable to do it? I feel really bad now for inwardly cursing all the irresponsible dog owners when really some of the dog poos might have been left because of these kind of owners. Opinions please!

Then they shouldn't own a dog. Part of the responsibility of owning a dog is cleaning up after it.

Also you can get scoopy poo stick things for old people who can't bend over or train your dog to poo on command in your own garden.

OttiliaVonBCup · 02/03/2015 16:05

Of course blind people can have dogs.

Guide dogs for example.

InfinitySeven · 02/03/2015 16:06

Guide Dogs, for example, are trained to defecate in the garden and a helper comes frequently to clean up after the dog. This occurs so that Guide Dogs don't mess up all the streets, as the owners won't be able to clean up after them.

When I was in the running for a physical disability dog (whole lot less catchy than Guide Dog!) the same was true.

Justwhy · 02/03/2015 16:06

Telling blind people they shouldn't own dogs is interesting...

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 02/03/2015 16:07

YABU. If you can't pick up dog shit, don't have a dog. There is a woman living on my street who uses an electric buggy and manages to pick up her dog's poo.

There was a thread on here about seeing dogs - I think they are trained to poo in certain places. Or something.

Plonkysaurus · 02/03/2015 16:07

Guide dogs for the blind though, need.

NeedABumChange · 02/03/2015 16:07

Poo on command as in when he needs to go, so twice a day at the roughly the right times if you say "ginger" to my dog he will produce a turd. It was easy to teach him this than it was to teach him to lie down. And he was a completely nutty 5 yr old rescue dog.

He will also cock his leg to the word "toilet". Very useful to get him to wee before he is being left alone.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 02/03/2015 16:07

Needabum, what if it's a guide dog for someone registered blind? Or a guide dog for someone with a disability which means lack of physical ability. There are very (very) few reasons not to, but there are a couple.

Griffineater · 02/03/2015 16:07

That's what I thought Ottilla and of course one of the main reasons for having a guide dog is to give you independence and do solo trips etc.

NeedABumChange Then they shouldn't own a dog. Part of the responsibility of owning a dog is cleaning up after it.

I think you will find a lot of blind people own a dog, as do people with disabilities.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2015 16:08

The only exception Id ever make is if a guide dog got a bad Attack of the runs. Normally they will only poo in their garden.

NeedABumChange · 02/03/2015 16:08

Sorry didn't mean guide dogs they are trained to poo in their gardens like my dog. Thought most people knew this.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/03/2015 16:08

Enjoy the tools you can get.

Guide dogs are trained.

finnbarrcar · 02/03/2015 16:09

There's no legal requirement for a blind person to pick up after their dog. They would NOT be fined by their local authority if they were unable to clean it up.

Griffineater · 02/03/2015 16:09

Wow, interesting Needabum

The only reason for not picking up Dog poo is if its not your Dogs. If it is you pick it up.

Plonkysaurus · 02/03/2015 16:10

Nope I had no idea. They're the only ones I wouldn't be bothered by if they pooed in the street. Noone else has an excuse to shun the responsibility.

calmexterior · 02/03/2015 16:16

YABVU
Don't blame guide dogs etc, it's not incapable people, I don't believe that for one second. It is selfish people who don't care if someone else gets covered in stinking shit.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 02/03/2015 16:17

I work with a Blind person [Visually Impaired is the correct description though I think these days] and they take their guide dog to a quiet gutter daily to defecate. Same spot every day and it is straight down the drain.

On that basis, I don't ever assume anything in the street is the product of a guide dog. With the runs or otherwise. What are the chances !

Every day is indeed a school day on MN though - poo on command when you say Ginger! Who knew !!

TheWitTank · 02/03/2015 16:18

You can get long handled poop scoops which you attach a bag into. Very handy for people with mobility issues. Guide dogs are trained to go on command or in a certain place. The only reason I haven't picked up behind my dog before is an extreme runny bum episode-there wasn't a chance that was going in a bag!

TattyDevine · 02/03/2015 16:19

I agree with calmexteriror, I'd imagine its generally people who don't give a shit (so to speak, ironically!) that generally leave it.

Samcro · 02/03/2015 16:21

we manage to train our staff to shit in the garden,
thats what you do.
if you cant pick up dog shit or train a dog when to do it. no dog. simple

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2015 16:22

It's people like my mother who are the problem.

Walking with her yesterday. Out of a car park I to some woods. My dog poos and I pick it up. Her dog poos and she's like "oh I don't need to pick it up in the woods do I". Errr, yes you do. As I pointed out to her if every dog owner had that attitude the woods would be knee deep in shit.

If I hadn't been there she wouldn't have picked it up.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 02/03/2015 16:22

Makes you wonder why more people don't teach this.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2015 16:23

samcro, I thought you meant your gardener and au pair for a minute! Maybe a maid and butler. Grin
