To think that Aldi/Lidl are just not that cheap?

I'm always hearing people rave about how cheap these supermarkets are.

I've given them a try over the last couple of weeks, and yes some things are cheaper, and some things were just really nice but a bit more expensive.

I did an online shop and then when directly to Aldi/Lidl to price compare and there was nothing that was a lot cheaper, some of their stuff was a complete rip off. I only buy a lot of things such as cheese and beans when they're on offer anyway.

Are people just kidding themselves? I'd go again as I say some of their items were just really good quality but I wouldn't go out of my way as the few pence I save would be swallowed in petrol.

I'm finding Aldi are creeping up in price and not too far removed from sainsburys since they made over our local store

strawberryangel · 01/03/2015 17:17

What specifically was more expensive? I always save an absolute fortune in Aldi compared with Asda or Tesco.

SwirlyThingAlert · 01/03/2015 17:19

I'm another one who saves an absolute fortune shopping at Aldi. How is it as expensive as Sainsbury's etc? What is it you're buying?

mrsminiverscharlady · 01/03/2015 17:20

Depends what you're comparing with. They're no different in price to the main supermarkets' value ranges but they're significantly nicer most of the time.

Pyjamaface · 01/03/2015 17:20

I've swapped to Aldi and find it loads cheaper. £50 a week with loads of fresh fruit & veg, compared to £75 with much less fresh stuff because I couldn't afford it.

Plus it takes me less than half an hour to get in and out so it doesn't take up so bloody much of my day Grin

fredfredgeorgejnr · 01/03/2015 17:21

strawberryangel Instant coffee, for example, never as cheaper as an "on offer" price in a supermarket. Other "permanent offer" type products like crisps they are generally more expensive on too.

The main difference is the products which are better quality but similar price - generally meat, ham etc. where they are (so far) much less free with the injecting water than the UK supermarkets. The prices are also consistent, so if you cannot afford to bulk buy the offer stuff due to cash or storage space - you'll likely be spending less.

Shopping there alone is certainly not the cheapest way to go.

countessmarkyabitch · 01/03/2015 17:22

Are people just kidding themselves...or perhaps you simply didn't find it cheaper but millions of other people do? What an odd perspective to start from, you didn't find something other people did, they must be lying or delusional.
Weird.

confusedandemployed · 01/03/2015 17:22

Hells bells I find them both miles cheaper. Unless you just buy the luxury stuff, which is priced at a premium there just as it is everywhere.

ahbollocks · 01/03/2015 17:22

Yanbu I find asda to besimilar in price and I prefer the variety tbh

duckbilled · 01/03/2015 17:23

I find Aldi much cheaper

Owllady · 01/03/2015 17:23

I find you get better quality stuff for a cheaper price

SwirlyThingAlert · 01/03/2015 17:24

My two main shops are always at Asda or Aldi. Asda's great for price, but Aldi's definitely cheaper.

fluffymouse · 01/03/2015 17:24

We find its nearly half the price of Sainsbury's.

What have you found that is more expensive in Aldi??

NannyR · 01/03/2015 17:24

When I have a spare ten minutes I sometimes check on my supermarket to see how much the equivalent shop would cost in other supermarkets compared to what I spend in Aldi. It's usually between 30% and 50% cheaper. That's on basic ingredients to cook from scratch, no processed stuff, biscuits or treats/snacky stuff.

FantasticRik · 01/03/2015 17:24

I'm not sure about Aldi but I now shop in Lidl and have saved a fortune. Fruit and veg for example is MUCH cheaper than other supermarkets and better quality, eggs, cheese, yoghurts, bread also much cheaper.

I occasionally go to Sainsburys and then remember why I switched to lidl at the till when the bill makes me go Shock

londonrach · 01/03/2015 17:25

Seriously! Lidl is so much cheaper than the others. I think tesco is the most expensive

SpottyTeacakes · 01/03/2015 17:25

I did two weeks worth at lidl for £58 yesterday. Will need to top up with fresh stuff but got loads of fruit and veg for that, loo roll, massive washing powder and loads of biscuits, chocolate bars and cereal bars for dh. I'm off to compare it on that website....I'll be back

DancingDinosaur · 01/03/2015 17:26

It knocks a third off my shopping bill.

SunnyBaudelaire · 01/03/2015 17:29

LIDL is the only place where I can do a budget family shop. I find Sainsbury's a rip off.

confusedandemployed · 01/03/2015 17:29

Me too Spotty. £59 and I got about 2 weeks' worth of meat / fish, this week's fruit and veg, 2 packs nappies and all the usual stuff. How can you go wrong with that?!

Starlightbright1 · 01/03/2015 17:31

I find I get far more for my money when I go to Aldi..Asda as one isn't close I get drawn into other depts.. I did notice on the comparisons on wall when I went yesterday they were comparing their eggs to happy eggs ..

I think it depends how you shop, we buy the chicken when it is on the special 6 or whatever they call it, buy the fruit and veg so long as we like it.

I don't think if you go buying value range everything from local supermarket you will notice much difference.

SwirlyThingAlert · 01/03/2015 17:31

We don't have a Lidl near us, otherwise I'd try that too. Smile I'm a 5 minute walk from an Aldi though, and bloody love it! Grin

missusdaly · 01/03/2015 17:32

DH and I started shopping in Aldi in '04. At the time we'd no car so had to take two buses to the nearest one a few towns away.

We still shop in Aldi but have noticed a dramatic increase in pricing in the last few years along with a drop in quality in some items. The cream crackers are a lot thinner, the cornflakes are coarser, the ham has a lot more bone in it. They recently changed the baby wipes too. I mean we do still like Aldi but they're not as good as they used to be. And it's not like we can 'go elsewhere', Aldi are the cheapest and money is very much an object.

msshapelybottom · 01/03/2015 17:32

I spent 3 months shopping exclusively at Tesco for convenience but last week went back to Lidl. I saved 30% of what I normally spent in Tesco and had a lot more to show for it. It's a no brainer IMO.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 01/03/2015 17:33

I still find a lidl shop about a third cheaper than sainsburys.
