To think that Aldi/Lidl are just not that cheap?

I'm always hearing people rave about how cheap these supermarkets are.

I've given them a try over the last couple of weeks, and yes some things are cheaper, and some things were just really nice but a bit more expensive.

I did an online shop and then when directly to Aldi/Lidl to price compare and there was nothing that was a lot cheaper, some of their stuff was a complete rip off. I only buy a lot of things such as cheese and beans when they're on offer anyway.

Are people just kidding themselves? I'd go again as I say some of their items were just really good quality but I wouldn't go out of my way as the few pence I save would be swallowed in petrol.

woodhill well part of the cheapness is that they use the same tills as other countries, where people do expect you to bag it at the table - and not just in the discount supermarkets but in all of them.

Hopefully people will learn the joys of the table at the back, or pack quick enough that they can bag it, it might then spill over to other supermarkets too!

Just done my weekly shop today, £62 in Aldi, £43 in Asda for the things I couldn't get in Aldi, I'm practically vegan and cook everything from scratch but DP and the 4 DC are carnivores.

Before when I was shopping at Tesco I was over £140 a week and had to put things back to stay under £140. I find the fruit and veg fine, I do a top up shop in Asda at the weekend for more fruit. Asda is the only supermarket in town.

woodhill · 02/03/2015 21:36

its a pita to have to bag it so quickly and it's not that cheap plus you can't use a credit card. I do pack quickly. our table is more of a narrow counter. its a enough hassle to get it out of the trolley once.

Aldi have proper checkouts.

NannyR · 02/03/2015 21:46

My local aldi has the same "pack at the table" style checkouts as lidl and you can now use credit cards at both aldi and lidl.

sanfairyanne · 02/03/2015 22:05

i like the quick packing thing. i get the rage now in asda etc sooooooooo slow

After watching that programme the other day about Tesco and its unethical practices towards suppliers, I now feel even less inclined to shop there. I also feel like I've been taken in for years by all their marketing tricks - expensive stuff at eye level, bogofs, end of aisle promotions and beautifully laid out, well lit welcoming stores...all designed to make me spend, spend, spend and it bloody worked. Gah, I hate myself for being such a mug. No more! At least with Aldi it feels a bit more basic and honest. Let's hope that doesn't change.

YANBU. I've just taken a look at some of the prices advertised by the nearest Lidl to me (no nearby Aldi) and they have 1kg of potatoes, for 69p
www.lidl.co.uk/en/2486.htm?action=showDetail&id=21326&ar=12

What an absolute rip off! I buy 2 x 56 lb (25kg) bags of spuds per year, fromm the local wholesaler, for £6 each. 25kg of spuds from Lidl would be £0.69 x 25 = £17.25. That's nearly 3 x time the cost. Even the over-the-top-on-price of the organic farm shop is only £9 for 25kg of organic Maris Pipers.

On the same 'offers' page, are cualiflowers at 69p each. Seriously? They's 40p each at the farmers market here.

Our local, independant butcher offers a deli counter, where he sells family-size quiches and flans, for £1 each. Giant sausage rolls for 40p; individual pies for 85p; a selection of cheeses, cut to the size you want at competitive prices. Smoked slamon, that has been line-caught and then smoked by the fisherman in his home-made smoker, for about £3 per packet.

As for buying bread made under the Chorleywood process, dear lord. I'm nearly upchucking at the thought of eating such cardboard dross. I do splash out on my flour, buying organic spelt and rye from Cann Mills www.bigbarn.co.uk/marketplace/vendors/cann-mill#anchor but a 1.5kg of flour makes two decent loaves for a quid apiece.

Nothing cleans window glass as well as vinegar and newspaper; no eggs taste as good as the free-range ones bought by the roadside from the old dear down the road for £1.80 a dozen.

Why are you paying through the nose by going to supermarkets? Find a good family butcher, get the meat cut to the amount to feed your families. 200g of meat/fish per adult and cut according to age/size of child; get things like giblets with your poultry, such you can make more from your Sunday roast chicken. Go to a farmers market for your fruit and veg. Find a potato wholesaler www.google.co.uk/maps/search/potato+wholesalers/@52.6433491,-1.3116742,7z/data=!3m1!4b1

I did a shop at aldi this weekend that came to £35. This included nappies, a box of wipes, 2 lots of meat and enough to make a meal each evening this week and lunches every day. Fresh veg, pasta etc. It would not cost that at asda or morrisons.

sanfairyanne · 02/03/2015 23:10

Grin Norland

sanfairyanne · 02/03/2015 23:10

lidl sell awesome rye flour by the way Smile

Norland · 02/03/2015 23:18

Shhh sanfairy much as I've tried, I can't persuade the OH to go newspaper and vinegar and our Waitrose bill is circa £1500 per month for the 4 of us (and I do make the bread and try and steer things towards the butchers)

Why do peeps driving out of Lidl, always seem to be unaware of the rules of the road?

BlackeyedSusan · 02/03/2015 23:43

the bread is cheaper, than morrisons, as is the milk, and the frozeen sweetcorn. their peas are the same price but nicer. their value chopped tomatoes are as cheap as asda but nicer.

asda smart price beans are the best.

the veggies and fruit are generally cheaper, though red onions are cheaper in morrisons and asda. their supersix are very good value.

aldi do not do redcuce to clear so sometimes you can get cheaper stuff in morrisons.

aldi do not always have the full range of stuff required and sometimes the offers are better value at other supermarkets...

Kikiw123 · 03/03/2015 00:56

I've just recently started shopping in aldi/lidl and took a gamble as I've tried the big supermarkets own brand stuff and didn't like it.
However Aldis range is very good.
I usually shop at m&s and sainsburys 120/130 a week down to about 80!
I know people are saying you can't compare their stuff to the price of a brand in asda BUT I know for a fact some of there stuff is made by bigger brands.
One of my neighbours gets me a bag of goodies from her work shop (it's a food factory & quite a good one) and a lot of the packaging is aldi branded.
I can get a pack of biscuits that asda sells for 1.40 for 49p in aldi for example.
There is big savings to be had. Their fruit and veg is VERY good.
