They just are.

There is no need.

Similarly, the deluded people who put eggs in the fridge are wrong.

Eggs are best left at room temperature.

Fact.

And don't get me started on butter...

Supermarket eggs aren't stored in fridges so why do it at home?

broomy123 · 01/03/2015 04:06

I grew up in hot country so I put everything in the fridge. I just hate things out as we have a hot kitchen. It drives my DH mad and the ketchup/brown sauce/mustard etc are constantly being moved back and forth.

I love the working class comment. It seems everything you do has to reflect on your class and not on a personal preference. Madness! Grin

Brown sauce in the cupboard, ketchup and mustard in the fridge. As it should be.

TheChickenSituation · 01/03/2015 04:56

Wow. It occurs to people to care about this sort of thing....?

If you live in a cold country, you don't put your ketchup in the fridge. If you live in a hot country, you do.

TheSkiingGardener · 01/03/2015 06:19

We put the ketchup in the fridge as a bottle can easily last 6-9 months in this house. Brown sauce is in the cupboard though as there's no way that fucker can go off.

Moniker1 · 01/03/2015 06:33

Eggs are best left at room temperature

Americans generally tend to store their eggs in the refrigerator to increase shelf life and to prevent bacterial contamination. On the other hand, overseas, the British are the least likely people in Europe to store their eggs in the fridge.
In the U.S., hens are not required to be vaccinated against Salmonella, with only one-third of farmers choosing to immunize their flocks.

Because of these immunization policies and practices, it is imperative to keep eggs refrigerated
British laws require that all egg hens be vaccinated for Salmonella. Since the UK eggs scare in 1988, the Department of Health has taken precautionary measures to prevent a Salmonella outbreak.

The above is from a DM article which might explain the confusion

I get eggs from a neighbor so I think that means I should keep mine in the fridge.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 01/03/2015 06:34

Microbiologist says we should keep ketchup in the fridge.

Stinkersmum · 01/03/2015 06:36

Ketchup is the devils food. Why the hell any adult would want to it eat it, or offer it to their child is beyond me.

JassyRadlett · 01/03/2015 06:37

Tidiness! I have more fridge space than cupboard or countertop space (which already have enough clutter). Being in the fridge does them no harm.

squoosh, what advice are you looking at?

I have trained myself not to care where the ketchup is stored in this country. That said, I prefer it chilled.

fatlazymummy · 01/03/2015 06:58

I keep mine in the fridge. I'm going to carry on doing so. I never eat it myself but my kids do and they've never complained about the temperature.

londonrach · 01/03/2015 07:11

In fridge as goes off otherwise. Read the labels! Yabu. Also it fits nicely in the door.

cashewnutty · 01/03/2015 07:12

I keep mine in the fridge as I like it cold. Ditto mayonnaise, pickles etc. I just like them like that. No other reason.

SaltySeaBird · 01/03/2015 07:13

Ketchup is in the fridge. A bottle tends to last over a year and seeing as the label says refrigerate why wouldn't we? Brown sauce gets eaten quicker and is left in the cupboard.

Eggs are left in the fridge, it came with a little plastic egg holder thing and we just have more room in the fridge.

Sirzy · 01/03/2015 07:21

Easy solution to the ketchup debate. Ban the horrid stuff!

SummerHouse · 01/03/2015 07:26

COLD crisps. They are the future. I've tasted them.

This was due to the mixed vending practice at my work. Crisps were in with cans so they came chilled. Taste sensation!

Now on to ketchup.... My mind is blown. I have what you might call a problem. I buy the largest you can buy. 1.35kg. I NEVER knew you were supposed to keep in in the fridge.

I am not going to though. This is a conspiracy designed to control the masses.

WhispersOfWickedness · 01/03/2015 07:36

Ketchup in fridge here. Not particularly for any health related reason, we just have more space in the fridge.
Am with you on the butter and eggs though.
I think I read something that said that they wash eggs in the US before they go on sale, so theirs need to be kept in the fridge as the washing removes a protective layer that means that bacteria can get in through the shell. They are not washed in Europe, so safe to leave out of the fridge Smile

SummerHouse · 01/03/2015 07:43

.... Some people put bread in the fridge...

Noodledoodledoo · 01/03/2015 07:46

Well as DH and I can't agree on this one ketchup is kept in fridge brown sauce in cupboard!

Fairylea · 01/03/2015 07:47

Well I've worked in restaurant management and catering for most of my life and have numerous food hygiene certificates etc and I would always keep both ketchup (as per the label) and eggs in the fridge. Why wouldn't you? The main aim of the fridge is to prolong food life by keeping bacteria to a minimum. I don't think it impairs the flavour at all by using it for things like ketchup and it can lengthen the shelf life so why not? All the restaurants I have worked in, including some big chains, have all stored it in the fridge.

meglet · 01/03/2015 07:50

ketchup in the fridge here. We hardly use the stuff, I probably buy a bottle once a year max. so I totally ignore the 'once opened consume within 6 weeks' advice but at least it's refrigerated.

PiratePanda · 01/03/2015 07:53

My husband used breadcrumbs the other day that were five years old. They were totally fine.

Grin

PS don't see how ketchup can be a class issue - surely the truly posh have it freshly made by Cook?

Mehitabel6 · 01/03/2015 07:53

I keep ketchup, eggs, jam , marmalade, pickles, chutneys in the fridge.
Sorry if OP thinks it wrong or it upsets her but I have absolutely no intention of changing! I don't find that it makes any difference to flavour. I would agree that they weren't in the past but then people didn't have fridges.
