To say that people who put their tomato sauce/ketchup in the fridge are plain wrong.

They just are.

There is no need.

Similarly, the deluded people who put eggs in the fridge are wrong.

Eggs are best left at room temperature.

Fact.

And don't get me started on butter...

summerhouse I like your spirit, sister!

No-one's going to pull the wool over your eyes, that's clear.

mooth · 03/03/2015 20:13

I'm not worrying about butter. Fuck that.

There, I said it.

SummerHouse · 03/03/2015 21:12

mooth that's how I felt about the sauce! Until someone mentioned.... The bubbling.... Yes bubbling when they opened an old fogotten sauce bottle in the cupboard....

SummerHouse · 03/03/2015 21:17

Right, that's the subject matter for my nightmare sorted for tonight..

mooth · 03/03/2015 21:50

It takes more than sauce stored at room temperature to scare me. Or butter.

Bring it on.

mooth · 03/03/2015 21:52

I keep mango chutney in the cupboard! So bollocks to the lot of you!

SummerHouse · 03/03/2015 22:08
Shock

Does it ever taste.... fizzy

mooth · 03/03/2015 22:15

Fizzy, no.

Furry.... Yes!

(Laughs scarily whilst throwing head back)

SoleSource · 03/03/2015 22:55

YABU and fridge frigid.

Salmotrutta · 03/03/2015 23:16

Isn't ketchup storage interesting!

By the way... I have made a speeadsheet

And I'm adding in the information I gathered last year about Toilet Roll Consumption per Week.

Could you cross reference that with the Intel gathered from the making from scratch thread?

SummerHouse · 04/03/2015 10:17

May I add that my sauce has been in the cupboard for 20 years. (Not same bottle of course). But is now in the fridge!

Even thinking of freezing it in handy portion sized cubes....

ouryve · 04/03/2015 10:23

Room temperature ketchup is revolting.

And they took the preservatives out of it at the end of the 80s.

ouryve · 04/03/2015 10:28

Also, we have a poorly insulated south facing kitchen. It varies between greenhouse and ice box. Butter and eggs stay in the fridge, apart from a small ramekin of butter, usually enough to last a day or two.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 04/03/2015 10:40

I like the idea of a small ramekin for the butter at last! A use for ramekins! We keep it out of the fridge but it takes a few days to use a pack and it gets that annoying convex section in the middle. And of course the odd crumb or streak of Marmite.

Agree that ketchup/jam/chutney now goes in fridge as additives have been reduced or removed. Eggs go in my larder which is cool but in my last house were in fridge as we had an Aga so the kitchen was always warm.

lostincumbria · 04/03/2015 10:52

Another one who has recently moved to the fridge, against all that is good and right.

Lweji · 04/03/2015 11:00

It depends, really.
If you go through a bottle in a week, it will probably be fine.
Mine last a few months, so they go in the fridge.

The same goes for food.
It is usually fine if I leave cooked food outside the fridge from one day to the next, but not if I want it to last one week or longer.

LabradorMama · 04/03/2015 11:16

Mine's in the fridge. Kitchen is sunny, South facing and hit because I have an Aga. Get me, a working class Aga owner, don't see many of those on MN Grin

LabradorMama · 04/03/2015 11:16

*hot. Clearly my working class education let me down there.

squoosh · 04/03/2015 11:21

Working class? You've got an Aga and a labrador, you ain't foolin' no one lady! Bet you're currently wearing a decades old Barbour jacket.

Jacana · 04/03/2015 11:22

In our house ketchup is called 'blood sauce'. In hospitals blood is kept in fridges, ergo the fridge is the only right and proper place for blood sauce. Except in our house. No-one likes it so it stays, unopened, on the shop shelf.

LabradorMama · 04/03/2015 17:11

Yes Squoosh over my Joules/Boden stripy regalia Wink

I just noticed on the back of a bottle of Ribena instructions to keep in the fridge after opening. Who knew?
