To wonder how long it took you to conceive if you have PCOS?

I have been diagnosed with Pcos. Been trying to conceive since November 2013. No luck so far. Was just wondering how long it took for anyone else with Pcos to conceive and was that naturally or with the aid of fertility medicines/treatment? Would've posted on Infertility boards, but there's never much traffic on there.

I had a 6 month course of clomid 18 years ago before becoming pregnant with DC1 - tried for a few months without any intervention, but when PCOS was diagnosed I was prescribed clomid.

Runnaway · 28/02/2015 17:00

Two years - not one single period in that time. Took metformin for six months, then became pregnant after one round of clomid. Ironically I am actually quite fertile when I actually do ovulate!!!

mygrandchildrenrock · 28/02/2015 17:01

It was 4 yrs after diagnosis, with Clomid, then 2 1/2 yrs after that birth also with Clomid. I was quite old, almost 40 then almost 43.
Good luck.

mrsm16 · 28/02/2015 17:01

conceived first month trying with ds but had just lost a bit of weight which can kick start ovulation in pcos.
tried for 7 months for number 2, conceived on 2nd month on clomid and currently 29 weeks pregnant with twins!
definitely recommend clomid if you have pcos I wasn't ovulating at all without it this time!

durhamgirl · 28/02/2015 17:03

DS took 2 cycles of clomid plus a couple years trying naturally
DD took 18 months of Clomid
Bump was completely unexpected and conceived naturally.

GP can refer you for further investigation/treatment and IME the waiting times can be quite long so better to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later. Good luck :)

LePetitMarseillais · 28/02/2015 17:18

7 years.Had Chlomid then IVF/ICSI.They were frozen embryos.

LePetitMarseillais · 28/02/2015 17:19

Conceived naturally with a third after.

glasgowlass · 28/02/2015 17:24

DS1 8 years with 12 cycles of clomid and 3 failed IUI cycles due to ovaries over stimulated. Eventually fell pregnant naturally.
DS2 4 years with no fertility treatment.
Best of luck.

Six weeks with DC1 and probably on the first go with DC2.

I was diagnosed at 17 and had only ever used condoms for contraception. Our decision to ditch contraception coincided roughly with a 4-stone weight loss using a low-carb diet. There seems to be some evidence that conceiving the first can reset ovulation for some women, making subsequent natural conceptions easier (and surprising!)

JoffreyBaratheon · 28/02/2015 17:27

When undiagnosed - 8 years.

Once diagnosed and given a round of Clomid - a few months.

Subsequent pregnancies were all 'mistakes'. Apparently sometimes the first pregnancy or so opens the floodgates.

JoffreyBaratheon · 28/02/2015 17:29

Forgot, during that 8 years I had 2 miscarriages. So I mean 8 years to a live baby. One of those miscarriages was particularly horrendous - miscarried the non identical twin of my first son at 12 weeks.

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 28/02/2015 17:32

2 months of trying followed by a month of metformin and I now have a 14 week old. I had started juicing and I wonder if that helped too.

annabanana30 · 28/02/2015 17:47

Thanks all for your replies. It's sad some of you had to wait so long, but it happened for you all, so there's hope! To go on Clomid, do you have to be a certain weight? I'm currently in the process of losing weight but far from a perfect BMI.

I'm 31 and just over 21 stone.

My history summarised is;

Feb 2010 - started prolonged, heavy bleeding with clots. Had to change sanitary pad every half hour.

Feb 2010 - jan 2011 - constant back and forth to docs... Them just telling me I need to lose weight. No medication given.

Jan 2011 - referred to hospital for ultrasound and tests. Couldn't find anything so only thing they could suggest was mirena coil so in it went! No bleeding at all while it was in.

Nov 2013 - mirena taken out as was making me moody and dp and I want to start family.

2 weeks later - heavy bleeding returns bad as ever so back to drs.

July 2014 - referred to hospital again. This time Pcos and immature fibroids on uterus are discovered. Only thing offered is mirena coil to stop bleeding (I declined) and they say nothing can be done until I lose weight (I'm trying!!!)

Jan 2015 - I go on hols so norethisterone given to halt the bleeding. Been given this before but when I come off it, the bleeding returns and doesn't stop. This time I bleed for a week and have pain (which is supposed to happen) and then bleeding stops. Dp and I are shagging like rabbits in hope that bleeding stopping means I have a chance of conceiving.

I was also given metformin in November last year to help with weight loss. They didn't seem to be doing much so in January day before my hols I came off them. Don't know if they could've been making me bleed but I've read metformin has helped loads of Pcos patients to conceive. I don't know what to do now! Should I go back on them or not! I am losing weight without them, but if they can help me conceive then I don't mind taking them at all, but if they're contributing to me bleeding....arrghh! But then I think that I was bleeding in 2011 - last year apart from when I had coil in, so the metformin must be ok to take without causing me to bleed! Arghhhh I just don't know!!!

15 years. 3 rounds of chlomid, 2 iui and 1 ivf all failed. Stopped trying at age 37 and fell pregnant naturally at age 39 and again at age 41

Good luck to you

CruCru · 28/02/2015 17:55

I tried (and failed) to get pregnant for a couple of years (including 3 rounds of IUI) before having IVF. My first round of IVF worked and I had ten frozen embryos left over. My second pregnancy was one of those frozen embryos.

IsItIorAreTheOthersCrazy · 28/02/2015 17:59

Your weight shouldn't effect suitability for clomid. I started trying naturally in June 2012. Was diagnosed with PCOS in June 2013 and started metformin. It has helped shift a load of weight and kick start my cycles (they were 90+ days!) and I've just done my first round of Clomid. I was prescribed it 4 months after starting Metformin and had to wait for my cycle to start before taking it. I'm 16 stone 7 (was 18stone 6) when I started metformin. Diet can really help Pcos so I would definately work on that.
Good luck!

Koalafications · 28/02/2015 18:07

1 shag during ovulation. We weren't even trying.

Koalafications · 28/02/2015 18:13

Sorry, I didn't mean for that to sound so flippant. I'm just still surprised that we conceived so quickly considering I have PCOD and I know that we are very lucky.

Koalafications · 28/02/2015 18:13

*PCOS

ColdFeetWarmHeart · 28/02/2015 18:16

Just short of 6months. Came off pill in July. no period until September. Was put on metformin in mid October. Had another period soon after. Conceived over Christmas and new year.
We are due to start trying for no2 soon. Just trying to lose a bit of weight soon

annabanana30 · 28/02/2015 18:16

Thanks for your replies again. Do you think I should start again on the metformin then? I just don't want the never ending months of bleeding back, ever! I did feel really energised on the met, just came off all my vitamins and the metformin in January before my hols because I was so frustrated with the bleeding spoiling my life and my clothes and my bed and my sofa but I'm really wondering whether I should go back on it.

Claireshh · 28/02/2015 18:28

Being being diagnosed with PCOS I had a miscarriage and then had trouble conceiving again.

Once diagnosed with PCOS I was prescribed Metformin. I followed the Deanna plan (Google for details - basically tons of sex around ovulation) and conceived one month later.

I continued metformin throughout pregnancy.

I used the same approach to conceive our second child.

It's definitely worth asking your gp about it. Good luck x

mummyrunnerbean · 28/02/2015 18:33

3 months after DP and I stopped using condoms because I'd had a copper coil put in Hmm.

IsItIorAreTheOthersCrazy · 28/02/2015 18:34

I haven't found the metformin & vitamins really effect my day-to-day living - I def don't bleed often on them, but when I do have a period its quite heavy (although I've always had that so hadnt attributed it to any medication). I think pcos is a nightmare of a condition because it effects everyone so differently. Have you asked your gp for advice? Have you been referred to a specialist yet?

IamSlave · 28/02/2015 18:37

Op without doubt go back on metformin, its a wonder drug for pcos, loose weight and eat well, follow low gi diet and you shld be fine, but unless your super fit and excersie all time, go back on metformin
