To wonder how long it took you to conceive if you have PCOS?

I have been diagnosed with Pcos. Been trying to conceive since November 2013. No luck so far. Was just wondering how long it took for anyone else with Pcos to conceive and was that naturally or with the aid of fertility medicines/treatment? Would've posted on Infertility boards, but there's never much traffic on there.

Metformin and low GI diet are a good starting point - I have to do this with exercise daily to lose any weight - a day off the exercise and I put weight on.

I did conceive naturally but seems I have to stay on met till 17 weeks as high risk of mc which is due to pcos (risk is 45-50% with pcos). If you feel much better on met it sounds like the insulin resistance does really impact you so I would stick with that imo.

2 months for DD, one well-timed shag for DS (it was entirely deliberate but still took us by surprise!). I was on Metformin both times.

ILoveMyMonkey · 28/02/2015 18:46

2 years to conceive first naturally. Still trying for second, now at 2 years, just been given metformin to try - but waiting till after a stressful event at work, hoping it will help as currently on CD 54 with no end in sight - sigh!

I have PCOS, BMI of 23 and do have periods (about a 35 day cycle). Took three years to conceive DC1 still trying after 19 months to conceive DC2. Fed up and depressed with TTC at the moment, really affecting my mental health. Two miscarriages haven't helped.

BowiesJumper · 28/02/2015 18:57

I conceived on the second cycle. But I did lose 8 and a half stone before trying so I'd say that helped a lot.

Good luck!

4 years. I had 2 mc but then had metformin and lost some weight and got pg - was put on 75mg of aspirin straightaway and lb is asleep upstairs now!! have you got a good consultant? I found that was the best thing. good luck with everything.

minipie · 28/02/2015 19:01

11 months for DD1, 3 months for DD2. However I have a normal BMI and regular-ish cycles so I guess my PCOS is on the mild end.

PCOS is often linked to thyroid issues - I believe TTC DD1 took 11 months because I was undiagnosed hypothyroid - I conceived 6 weeks after being put on thyroxine. So do get thyroid checked if you haven't already.

Diagnosed in 2007 I think. Had two failed rounds of ivf but conceived naturally three years after diagnosis, and again since (took about 18 months of not trying that hard).

The difference for me, I think, was that I lost weight and got fitter than I'd been before or since. Running far and fast; spinning; weights.

DirtyDancing · 28/02/2015 19:16

It took 1 year after diagnosis, we were trying for 3 years in total as it took so long for the doctor to refer me to a fertility clinic. I had to have an op to remove a polyp before they would start me on clomid. I then took Clomid for 7 months and fell pregnant.

PinkParsnips · 28/02/2015 19:19

It took 18 months , that was with one early miscarriage the first month after stopping the pill. I still had regular-ish periods and didn't need any treatment to fall pg with DD.
I took agnus castus which I know isn't always recommended but it seemed to work for me.

zobey · 28/02/2015 19:26

5 years.

stopgap · 28/02/2015 19:39

First time both times. But:

I am atypical PCOS (5'7 and started out before first pregnancy at 8.5 stone)

I cut out sugar completely for three months before even trying, went on Vitex, and my periods went from every 38 days to every 34.

I developed Hashimoto's after the first pregnancy, and had gestational diabetes in the second pregnancy. The two conditions are closely linked to PCOS.

Dd1 born 3 yrs ttc icsi (due to mfi)
Dd2? Tbc probablydue after 2 yrs ttc icsi again.
I also have underactive thyroid like a pp.
I was on metformin for all ivf cycles. (No mc Fx)
I would definitely get back on it, but i didnt find any weight loss, but then my bmi was 20-22.
The main benefit is to reduce mc risks. Certainly it never made me bleed, if anything improved regularity of cycles a little.
The best thing though is low gi- brown bread, rice, pasta., no or very little orange juice.
Before last ivf i moved to eating from a side plate, especially for rice/pasta etc.
Get your tsh measured under 2.5 is best for conception.
You may find you get refused clomid/ivf etc due to a bmi over 30. And its worth reducing anyway as success rates are higher under 25 (ivf at least i would think clomid too) probably lower mc rate and also if you only get x clomid cycles to maximise the chances on those.

Naty1 · 28/02/2015 20:56

Meant to say definitely get a sperm analysis done too, as despite you having an issue it may not be the cause - we wasted 9m testing my ovulation to find it was unlikely to be that

GertrudePerkins · 28/02/2015 21:01

we tried for about 12mo for dd1 before going for medical advice
got PCOS diagnosis about 3 months on
went onto Clomid, conceived on second cycle

2 years later, utterly unplanned, I got pregnant with dd2 Grin.

i wasn't overweight with either PG (am now though, by about 1st). haven't even been on metformin

sdaisy26 · 28/02/2015 21:06

2 yrs & 6 cycles of clomid plus metformin (even though I was a healthy bmi drs thought this may help prevent mc) for dc1 (I got pg first clomid cycle but miscarried).

When dc1 was 10 months old I had a surprise (in that we never imagined it could happen naturally - we weren't using contraception so it wasn't completely unexpected) bfp, but mc. However, dc2 conceived the following month. He's 11 months now & we have been a lot less relaxed about not using contraception this time round!

Good luck, I remember very well how awful dtc was. I hope you get some good news soon x

Julietee · 28/02/2015 21:19

Not long at all for DS, but I had lost a lot of weight (about 2-3 stone) on a v low carb diet for my wedding and was very healthy. I was also on metformin.

I conceived without trying recently but had a missed miscarriage. My doc won't investigate how bad the PCOS is now (it was last assessed when diagnosed about 8 years ago) because I haven't had 3 miscarriages, which I think is unfair - I just want to know where I stand with my condition, not a series of miscarriage investigations. I think to conceive successfully again and stay pregnant I'll have to lose weight again and eat a lot healthier.

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 28/02/2015 21:40

I had my eldest naturally at 36. I've been sexually active (not always safely, because I was stupid!) since I was 15.

... got pregnant again 6months later (lost that one), had my second at 38, and I'm due my 3rd in April. I was told I would never have children.

I was also told my other medical problems meant I was ineligible for assistance to get pregnant.

WineIsMyMainVice · 28/02/2015 22:37

7 years. 9 rounds of chlomid. 3 IUI cycles. 3rd ivf we conceived DD1. 18 months later decided to try again and conceived DS in 6 weeks - naturally!!
Good luck!
