to restyle my magnolia IKEA house with the theme russian opulence even though I'm planning to move in 5ish years

lexiepix · 28/02/2015 12:59

So I did my whole house up to be neutral and appealing to a wide audience but I'm staying here longer than I expected. Still plan to move but many years later.

I really want to do a Russian theme as I'm addicted to gold leaf, faberge eggs and all that style. Everyone says I'm barking as it will put people off but I just can't stand this magnolia hell anymore, have been inside all day today and its driving me crazy, not quite like fight club..yet.

Surely people will see past any decoration and not be put off?

Do you want gold leaf on architraves and ceiling roses? How much are we talking?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 28/02/2015 13:05

Photograph it now while its boring so you can use the photos in advertising later.

UptheChimney · 28/02/2015 13:07

What sort of house? If it's a suburban bungalow -- well, I suppose people have their own taste, and there's no accounting for it. If it's a 10 bedroom villa, and the gold leaf and Fabergé eggs are real, knock yourself out.

Summerisle1 · 28/02/2015 13:12

Russian Opulence? Are you an oligarch with a property to match? Only it'll look bonkers in a 3 bed suburban semi. Not that there's anything wrong with bonkers, of course. It just depends on how much you are going to want to sell it and how quickly.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 28/02/2015 13:15

YANBU. I'm sick to the back teeth of tasteful neutrals and pale wood.

I hope you get a samovar and a bear skin rug.

MrsTawdry · 28/02/2015 13:19

YANBU you never know what the future holds. I'm only here in my current home for the next 6 months...doesn't mean I'm not always improving the decor.

juneau · 28/02/2015 13:21

YANBU to want to personalise your home, no. However, you might want to stick to changes that will be easy enough to reverse when it comes to selling it. So why not put up some fancy wallpaper, get some blinging cushions, curtains that you could take with you (or put the bland ones back up at sale time), etc.

attheendoftheday · 28/02/2015 13:38

5 years is a fair chunk of time to live somewhere, certainly long enough for it to be worth doing the decor to your taste. Just keep half a mind on how you can make it saleable again.

I'm all for bonkers decor btw. Bland decor is joyless.

engeika · 28/02/2015 13:53

Do what you love - it is your home - but keep an eye to how easily it could be changed back. Fabrics, walls, soft furnishing, colour - all easy to change back to neutral. A huge black sunken bath with gold taps and mirrored ceiling - not so easy.

ElsaLitcha · 28/02/2015 14:01

You might as well. You might get hit by a bus any day anyway. Might as well enjoy your time in your house.

wowfudge · 28/02/2015 14:04

Dacha 'chic' in suburbia: go for it. All the red, gold and marble will really add to the value. Buy a balalaika and hang it in the wall too.

KatieMorag · 28/02/2015 14:10

We have a balalaika and we are very boring and normal

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/02/2015 14:12

Don't forget the rocket launcher in the corner Grin

I'll get me coat ...

ssd · 28/02/2015 14:15

send me some pics when its done, sounds fab

countessmarkyabitch · 28/02/2015 14:17

No, people won't see past any decoration and buy it anyway. But you can get rid of all your gold stuff when you put it on the market.
In the meantime, do what you like. Sounds hideous to me but who cares?

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 28/02/2015 14:19

Other than the house I grew up in, I've only lived in one other house for five years. Five years is ages! It's your home so knock yourself out.

Naoko · 28/02/2015 14:25

Five years is a long time! If all else fails spend a week painting it white before you put it on the market. Small price to pay for not putting up with decor you hate for half a decade.

JoanHickson · 28/02/2015 14:41

Op can you please link some pictures of the type of decor you have in mind?

wowfudge · 28/02/2015 14:44

I'm not for one moment suggesting the Russian thing makes the OP interesting Wink. I'd be more impressed if someone could play a balalaika - perhaps a piano accordion too?

How about a home vodka bar?

ghostyslovesheep · 28/02/2015 14:46

I'm considering selling my house this year but I'm still decorating my bed room Like Ellie's house on Cougar Town - go for it

mupperoon · 28/02/2015 14:55

YANBU. I am stuck in beigetopia at the moment waiting for the day when we have enough money to redecorate. Our house is currently all the colours of the shitbow. I long for burnt oranges, deep blues and malachite greens.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 28/02/2015 15:47

Magnolia? Shock

Any true Ikea minimalist knows it needs to be Apple White.

Anyway, I say go for it. Just accept that you might need a job lot of white paint at some point in the future

MrsJuice · 28/02/2015 16:02

Ha ha!
We are very Swedish/minimalist throughout the house.
Somehow we have ended up with a mirrored, scarlet and black boudoir. It started as a joke, but we even have a mirrored chest of drawers now.
Also, anyone witnessing our garage conversion would be very scared. For H&S reasons we cannot allow the children in there. All surfaces are non-porous and can we steam cleaned.
We have no affiliations with sex clubs of any kind. Grin

Here's some ideas for your bedroom, sitting room and hallway Smile

hope this works, haven't attached pics before

Go for it - 5 years is a long time to live with vanilla walls!
