To think these beauty experts are deluding themselves

NurseNancyatToyHospital · 26/02/2015 23:39

Sali Hughes and India Knight and two other beauty experts discussing "ageing gracefully".

India and the woman on the right are very overweight. The skin care expert's blusher is clown like and the woman next to her appears to have a face full of fillers. They earn their living - in part - advising woman on how to look good but, with the exception of Sali Hughes, they don't! It just makes me think about what a farce the whole beauty industry is.

Any thoughts?

OP posts:
madmomma · 27/02/2015 09:14

I think Sali looks fabulous. Not sure why India is putting trainers with a floral dress but each to their own.

OttiliaVonBCup · 27/02/2015 09:16

Caroline Hirons does have a fair bit of makeup on, but at least they have women with experience of ageing themselves talking about it.

Nancy66 · 27/02/2015 09:26

Sali looks good. I think the American woman looks ok for her age.

India and the other bird look a mess.

Chiggers · 27/02/2015 09:38

Watched the video and Sali Hughes voice was so irritating, it made me want to grind my teeth on my fridge door. I don't think I could watch her again TBH, so will stick to reading about her instead.

Bambambini · 27/02/2015 09:39

I think India looks the best amongst them. Out of the 4, she stands outs and looks interesting. And I like her dress.

ragged · 27/02/2015 09:42

i find it rather sad that they and others care so much how they look. That anyone defines self-esteem by what they see in the mirror.

I want to start an anti-beauty movement.

giantpurplepeopleeater · 27/02/2015 09:53

Shock since when has it been a prerequisite that you have to be skinny in order to be beautiful and talk about beauty? For that bit YABU, very U.

Beauty comes in many different shapes, sizes, amount of make-up, looks that people like. Isn't it better that a panel discussing these things represents a wide range of people instead of focussing on some media stereotyping of the 'ideal beauty'?

Also - isn't it less about how they look and more about what they say? Their own experiences of ageing, and their knowledge of the industry, the products on offer, and the science behind them.

AFAIK one of them is considered a 'skin care expert' I'm sure this has as much, if not more, to do with science than with beauty. I don't see why her looks would be a detriment to her doing her job.

velourvoyageur · 27/02/2015 09:54

lovely thread Hmm

KissyBoo · 27/02/2015 09:55

Perhaps this is an attempt at an ironic anti-beauty stance.

Flambola · 27/02/2015 10:21

I'm quite enjoying the chat - they're very honest. Not a huge fan of Caroline Hirons but she said herself she's lucky not to need any fillers at the moment because she's a 'chubster'. They're well aware of their 'flaws'.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/02/2015 10:25

They're perfectly normal women with normal figures who happento know quite a bit about the beauty and skincare market.

How on earth does being overweight count them out of that Confused

SaucyJack · 27/02/2015 10:29

Isn't it rather the point that they've picked women to talk about ageing who quite clearly understand what it's like to no longer be a size 6 eighteen year old?

Must admit tho that I CBA to watch the video.

PureMorning · 27/02/2015 10:33

So caring about ones skin is only for thin teens now?

LabradorMama · 27/02/2015 10:38

For goodness sake, regardless of your opinion on how they look, they have decades of industry experience between them - Caroline Hirons in particular really knows her stuff. I assume you found the video because you wanted advice/information in this area so why not soak it up rather than being catty about their appearances?

McFox · 27/02/2015 10:40

No wonder we all give ourselves a hard time when we know that other women are so bitchy. OP you are being so unreasonable and nasty, and it's sad that some pp are agreeing.

Beauty is nothing to do with weight, age, or how utterly flawless your skin is. You don't seem like a beautiful person to me right now, and I couldn't care less what you look like. Grow up.

SukieTuesday · 27/02/2015 10:44

You're a little ray of sunshine aren't you.

If your surgeon is shit hot at cutting and your GP knows the best treatment regimes does it matter if one smokes and the other has a high BMI?

Listen to your clip. It took a few minutes to hear 'skin care expert's (whose) blusher is clown like' say that she advises people to throw away magnifying mirrors because so many of her clients obsess over flaws that are barely noticeable to others. That's positive and helpful advice.

The 'the woman ... (who) appears to have a face full of fillers' talks about how she's taken years to be more accepting of herself but still uses a magnifying mirror and feels bad at the impact two glasses of wine have on her face the next day. Sail Hughes says she wants the wine and India Knight says she does too and sugar does the damage so really we should drink champagne! That's very good advice.

Skincare and beauty is about having fun with makeup and making the best of what you have. It doesn't exclude you on weight, age or looks. That's the fashion industry.

KissyBoo · 27/02/2015 10:47

I do think the OP has a point. If you put yourself out there as an expert on all things beautifying and yet look like a bag lady- you aren't a good example for what you preach.

It would be a bit like taking beauty advice from Ann Widecombe or a healthy diet from someone morbidly obese- are you really going to trust what they say when there is little evidence of it working?

OttiliaVonBCup · 27/02/2015 10:53

I think the poster who said CH was overweight might have meant it in a way that sometimes extra weight keeps your skin plumper looking.
I think...

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 27/02/2015 10:54

India Knight is the only one who looks comfortable in her own skin. The others look very awkward.

proteins · 27/02/2015 10:56

It would be a bit like taking beauty advice from Ann Widecombe or a healthy diet from someone morbidly obese- are you really going to trust what they say when there is little evidence of it working?

Yes I would, if Ann Widecombe had a particularly good eye for lines, colours and lots of experience with beauty products. Just because she was not born with Gisele-looks doesn't mean that she doesn't have good advice to give.

And there are any number of reasons why someone is morbidly obese, and the fact that they're struggling themselves does not mean that they don't have anything to teach, or an enlightening viewpoint to impart.

proteins · 27/02/2015 10:58

The others look very awkward.

Again, they may not be natural performers. But they are sitting on a discussion panel about ageing naturally, and to put them down about this seems unnecessary.

Does anyone actually disagree with their views on the topic of discussion?

dejarderoncar · 27/02/2015 11:17

does anyone know where I could get a dress like the one India is wearing? I think she looks great - and I love the trainers with it too!

SukieTuesday · 27/02/2015 11:26

You could tweet her and ask?

I've found the perfect person for the OP to get skincare and beauty advice from. They have great skin, good makeup and live what they preach. If they're interested in a refreshing change ...

RudefromBude · 27/02/2015 12:11

I really enjoyed that and didn't find them deluded or irritating. I think Caroline was the victim of shite camera angle and lighting the woman is seriously cute.
Blimey- some of you are so miserable Grin

FrenchJunebug · 27/02/2015 12:17

YABU as the lighting is horrible for a start and the background would make anybody look clownish. Even the young one look horrible.

the two overweight are not, they are probably size 16 which is the UK average.

Finally should only skinny beautiful supermodel talk about 'aging gracefully' which in my book aging feeling confident on how you look without the need to go all out with plastic surgery?!
