To let ds take a bottle taped to an egg box into school as his 'art homework'

Ds is 5.
Homework was to make something with a plastic bottle and other recycled objects. I gave him a bottle and a variety of boxes and junk and left him to it.

He has created a 'tank' by sticking the bottle to half an egg box so it looks like the tank's tracks. He's put some stickers on the tank for the controls and had a very poor attempt at colouring the egg box. Oh and shoved some red tissue paper in the front of the bottle which is meant to be what the tank is firing.

It looks truly shit. However after being at work all day Monday - Friday I just haven't got it in me to create a junk modelling masterpiece. I know I will regret this tomorrow when all the other parents show up with awesome creations.

Aibu to let him get on with it?

It's a really good project, it does show a 5 year old has done it/taken the lead.
One of my boys had a volcano project, build a volcano type thing. Off we went to lidls to get some card, and (ok I helped) build a cardboard rocky mountain face, then covered it with torn up news paper. Then painted it and used painted sponges for trees. My son also had the idea to put an old red bike light in the top to make it look like lava under the sweet wrappers.
Soooo we get to school... 2 had volcanos made out of concrete, 1 had a squirting lava one and several were very professional. Put our card board/ papier mache creation to shame!

Yes you should absolutely let him take it in. You can see he's put a lot of thought and effort into that, I think its bloody brilliant!!
Like others said its his homework, to be completed by him and that's exactly what he's done. You should be proud

I wish that schools would stop encouraging all this competitive parenting shit with projects and competitions.
DD's old primary were especially bad for it. Year after year the golden girl "won" every fecking thing going (helped along by the fact her mother was a TA/Dinner monitor/Head PTA member/chief arse licker upper Etc)

Every Year I let my dd take in her own creations. Every year GG "parents" made them for her. DD was so disappointed after the Easter comp one year when yet again her hat didn't even get a look in. I didn't need to ask who had won.

The following year it came to the Easter egg comp, DD declared "What's the point? "GG" is going to win" and refused point blank to even try.
I though fuck it two can play at this game. Unashamedly I made the whole thing with minimal input from dd, it took me hours (luckily I am quite creative)...it was more than obvious that a 9 year old hadn't completed it but I actually didn't give a shit. I proudly sent dd in with "her" project.

She came out of school that day with a face like a slapped arse and solemnly said "Guess who won?" in a tone that suggested "yep,GG again".
I was ready to give her a great big hug when she gave me the biggest grin ever and squealed "Mum we did it!!"

I am not proud of the fact that I had taken away the chance from someone else and I hated that the school encouraged it, but it was clear that parents models always won (in all year groups) so to have my dd win just once in the whole 7 years at that school and to see that smile on her face was worth it!!

BlackeyedSusan · 26/02/2015 22:28

that sound a brilliant model.

there have been competitions in school where it is obvious that the winner has had massive parental input. one teacher got all her class to do the competition in school. I was thrilled as it saved me from sitting on my hands and biting my lips trying not to get too involved.

Lizzie487 · 26/02/2015 22:33

I LOVE it!!!

TheresACatInMeKitchen · 26/02/2015 22:43

Oh I wish dd's school would have done that susan. It would have made the whole thing a lot fairer and teachers would know exactly the time and effort put in.
I would also save a lot of upset for the children when the ones that have entered their own work are competing against others that have been completed by adults. I don't know how schools can justify this as learning or even fun!!

I am just glad that primary is no more, I will never have the school project/comp angst again!

MrsBojingles · 26/02/2015 22:43

YANBU. There's a glass of water in the Tate Modern. Just give it a pretentious name and you're golden.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 26/02/2015 22:51

I'm one of those parents who do it all, I learnt that if I did the project then they will win something.

I think it's gives them the message that it's ok to delegate tasks.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 26/02/2015 22:52

Btw great tank, you should be proud.

GetSober · 26/02/2015 23:09

Can't see the photo (am on the app) but your description sounds adorable! He should definitely take it in!

Our primary school had an Easter Egg decorating competition. The first year, my brother won as Mum had made his. The second year, she scrupulously made him do it all himself and it was the shittest thing you've ever seen. It was even cracked down both sides - once where he'd dropped it, and they other where Mum had deliberately cracked it "so it'll match at least".

You guessed it. He won again. Blatant sympathy vote, but he won.

The next year, he was banned from entering.

nickelbarapasaurus · 26/02/2015 23:18

When I popped the picture up, my honest first, gut opinion was "that's bloody brilliant!"
It's perfect for a 5 year old's model of a tank - he thought of thr idea and he orchestrated it.
He has done it really well, and it looks just like a tank

Definitely send it in and proudly boast he did it all by himself!

nocoolnamesleft · 27/02/2015 00:02

I think that's a pretty cool tank, and extremely good for a 5 year old!

SwirlyThingAlert · 27/02/2015 00:22

YADDDNBU, i can't stand the alpha mummy shit culture that completely takes over what their child's supposed to do. Back off people, it's supposed to your child's work, not a mummy competition! Hmm
Notmymuse if that's your 5 year's old work, (at 5! did that all by himself? Really? Really, really?!) it's bloody brilliant. Leave him to it. It's HIS homework, not yours and if he truly has done that himself then I'm impressed.

TheIronGnome · 27/02/2015 00:23

Seriously piper?? Hmm

SwirlyThingAlert · 27/02/2015 00:26

Oh god. Apparently it's a competition. Ds is all 'mine might win!' Er no. It won't.

Wow, just seen this. Hope you're not passing that attitude onto your child. I'd be even more proud of him for making it himself.
Kids who have made stuff themselves should get awarded more credit and have more chance of winning against all the little supreme darlings who have mum barging in and doing their work for them. Just what is the point in that?!

SwirlyThingAlert · 27/02/2015 00:27

Definitely send it in and proudly boast he did it all by himself!

This with bells on. Any proud parent would - I know I would if mine did that!
