I have not exercised for 20 years.
1 month ago I started doing 30 mins swimming and 30 mins walking on treadmill at 4 miles an hour for 30 mins.
I have lost..... NO WEIGHT
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4cm off each thigh
4cm off my tummy
5cm off my boobs
6 cm off my waist
6cm off my bum

YIIPPPPPPPEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Sorry had to post on here as am trying to do it in secret as I have talked the talk about weight loss too many times with my friends and not followed through so thought being secret about it was the best way)

Fantastic OP, well done! This is just the kind of motivational thread that I needed to read as well, I've been dawdling about a gym membership (next week... next week, etc) since November, but I've decided to join this weekend. Hopefully I'll be like you in a month or two.

RachelHRD · 26/02/2015 19:53

Brilliant! I wish I had measured myself before I got back into exercise in September for the first time in around 10 years!
I'm doing Aquafit classes plus a 500m swim 2-3 times a week and I feel fitter and a bit more toned but no major difference in the scales and as I tend to wear leggings and jersey dress/tops it's hard to tell if clothes are much looser - but it has to be doing some good as I'm generally knackered after!!

HeisenbergsBlueMeth · 26/02/2015 19:56

Fantastic, well done you Smile
Keep up the good work

Mocheenee · 26/02/2015 20:15

Thanks to your inspiring post I managed 20 mins on the treadmill tonight.
Hope to build up to 30 mins like yourself, and build up on the speed too.
Go Strumpers!!

StrumpersPlunkett · 26/02/2015 22:33

Yay moch. That is great!! 20 mins must be good surely got your heart working a bit more.
Thanks again. It is such a lovely suprise to be enjoying exercise.

Hi folks just checking back in been going to the gym and swim still 3 times a week. Feel achey for 12-24 hours after.
Trying not to
Measure myself until another month has passed. Now have to do my jeans belt up one notch tighter though so hope things still going in the right direction! Eek it is not knowing. The scales are now at 14st 6 lb so that is half a stone loss in 6 weeks so not much. I hope the tape measure will give me better news on the 22nd
How is anyone else doing? Moch??

Strumpers, afaik slow weight loss is far better for your health and much more sustainable over the long term.
You are doing it the right way, you'll have lost body fat and gained muscle so the actual fat loss will be more than the half a stone you see on the scales.

bear in mind that muscle is nearly twice as dense as fat, so you could add one 'cup' of muscle (ie a measure of volume rather than weight) and shed 2 cups of fat and still be pretty much the same weight

StrumpersPlunkett · 10/03/2015 06:58

Thank you Suzanne. I know I am just being impatient.

DamsonInDistress · 10/03/2015 08:38

Building muscle takes some serious exercise and decent weight lifting so I'd actually day that nearly all of the weight loss will be fat loss at this stage. And a steady as rocks pound a week is a fabulous achievement and very sustainable. You should be hugely proud!

Lovemycatsandkids · 10/03/2015 08:42

Well done you. That's a real achievement. Flowers

Suzannewithaplan · 10/03/2015 08:50

Building muscle to any extent tends to require resistance training but cardio exercise will help to maintain existing lean mass while you are shedding fat.

It's quite natural to be impatient OP, but healthier afaik to make gradual changes to body composition. ?

DecaffTastesWeird · 10/03/2015 08:54

Yay! Amazing result OP! YANBU at all to be excited. Smile

DecaffTastesWeird · 10/03/2015 08:55

Oh and YY to Suzanne - better to make gradual changes

MrsMook · 10/03/2015 09:05

That's a fantastic, healthy fat loss and muscle gain, and will have long term benefits.

Another good motivator and progress check is selfie photos to compare over time.

I'm the same weight that I was 6 months ago, but can now zip up my wedding dress, which was gaping by at least an inch. Again because of changes to fat and muscle levels. The irony is that I weighed more when I got married.

Latara · 10/03/2015 10:24

Well done.

This reminds me I must get back to the gym.

RE: weight loss - when I went to the gym and didn't count calories I didn't lose weight but I did tone up nicely.
The weight loss only came when I counted calories.

So I have started counting calories again and will be back at the gym soon.

Latara · 10/03/2015 10:27

Also try doing the weights at the gym - it tones up, burns fat even after you have stopped working out and also it's fun to see how strong you can get!

Good for you sticking at it for a month - I find it very hard to stick at exercise because I'm not a naturally sporty person. But I enjoy weights and the rowing machine.

SummerHouse · 10/03/2015 10:57

Awesome! Good work. If ever you think you can't be bothered just read you op again and remember the excitement. Grin

I am doing a 10 k in two weeks and I can't wait for my run tonight.

HormonalHeap · 10/03/2015 12:41

Am on week 6 of doing similar to you, 3 times a week. What I've learnt is not to let it affect my overall plan if I occasionally pig out. I just think 'that was yummy/worth every mouthful', then carry on as before. And I've still lost a stone.

loopymoomoo · 10/03/2015 12:53

Well done everyone!

I was had really low body confidence before Christmas as I had let the pounds creep on, everyone said I looked good but I think I must carry weight well as I'm tall? Anyway... I decided that I was going to eat and drink over Christmas without worrying about it and on January 5th (back to work day) I was going to hit the gym and eat healthily.

Since then I have lost 5 pounds, which isn't that much but have dropped a dress size and the wobbly bits have disappeared and are now starting to tone up!

All I have done is eat healthily (no fad diet for a change!) Monday - Friday with no snacks/chocolate/cake/crisps, no second helpings etc... but on a weekend I can have what I want although I'm still good with portion size as I think I have got used to it, I won't go without something if I fancy it.

The other change I have made is to go to the gym for a class on Monday and Wednesday evening and a pt session on a Friday afternoon, I have also started walking whenever possible instead of jumping in the car.

I feel so much better about myself and I like Hormonalheap I don't stress out if I have something that isn't particularly healthy I just enjoy it and carry on as before.

Good Luck everyone, I honestly think that eating a little less each day and moving a little more is the way forward!

loopymoomoo · 10/03/2015 12:55

MrsMook I wish that I had taken before photos, I was discussing this with my trainer last week and she said that visual proof is such a great motivational tool to keep people going!

frumpet · 10/03/2015 13:02

Strumpers you have given me the incentive to book in for an induction at my local gym tomorrow morning .
I have also measured myself and only needed the one tape which made me feel quite good , and taking a hideous selfie of myself in lycra Grin

StrumpersPlunkett · 10/03/2015 15:45

Yay well done everyone sounds like you are all superstars! It is great to hear positive stories.
I have a couple of pics from my sisters birthday in January to keep me motivated.
Have wondered about venturing to the weights section of the gym but was a bit scared. Am loving my Aqua aerobics bits. Are there weight things I can use in the pool?
