Astrology in Healthcare

SweetValentine · 24/02/2015 21:01

"A Tory MP has has claimed NHS over-crowding could be solved by doctors using astrology to treat patients.

"Astrology is a useful diagnostic tool enabling us to see strengths and weaknesses via the birth chart.

"People who oppose what I say are usually bullies who have never studied astrology.

Bizarrely, Tredinnick, 65, who is chairman of the All-Party Group for Integrated Healthcare, went on to say people who opposed astrology were "racist".

Tredinnick, who was born under the Capricorn star sign, claims his own astrological chart suggests he was destined to be a "servant of the people." He said: "I have a strong 6th house which suggests an emphasis on being a servant of the people - and this is quite a strong indication of health and healing. My Moon-Venus-Jupiter planets (in Aquarius) sit opposite Pluto in the 12th house."

I'm not even going to ask if AIBU to think it's a load of bollocks, because it is a load of bollocks.

??Can't wait for work tomorrow. I'll look up their star sign and tell them it's in their stars. I might have more luck with a few patients?sigh?

anyway to those of us that work in the nhs and have to put up with the bullocks spouted and implemented by out political masters this isn't a huge shock.

It's our own fault we get what we vote for.

LurkingHusband · 25/02/2015 17:12

The funniest thing is I have met at least 2 healthcare professionals (one studied with me Smile) who studied and used astrology. However, not quite like this guy. And they also thought it was bollocks Smile.

PausingFlatly · 25/02/2015 17:19

Perhaps Jeremy Hunt could have offered this presenter a homeopathic remedy for his Grin

Enormouse · 25/02/2015 17:21

Love the Dara O'Briain clip.

I'm a pisces. Does that mean I should get the coil fitted? Or should water signs avoid all IUD/IUS contraceptives.

No. It means your birthday is between 21st Feb and 20th March (or somesuch similar) Smile.

Enormouse · 25/02/2015 17:31

Said like typical, pragmatic earth sign lurking Grin

geekymommy · 25/02/2015 17:53

Nice to see that we in the US don't have a monopoly on whackaloons in the government trying to interfere with the health care system.

Dawndonnaagain · 25/02/2015 18:11

Pausing I was on the school run when Naughtie did that, nearly crashed the bloody car. Brilliant it was, bloody brilliant!

PausingFlatly · 25/02/2015 18:23

Grin It just never gets old...

PacificDogwood · 25/02/2015 18:48

No, it never does get old - thanks for posting, Pausing.
I was in the car too when he made that… blunder and thought it was funny, but what really cracked me up to the point where I had to pull over and wipe the tears off my face, was how HE was clearly trying to suppress The Hysterics whilst on live radio Grin
Made my day

Springheeled · 25/02/2015 19:04

Alright, I'll stick my head over the parapet... I think that it might not be completely crazy to use birth charts (not star signs) in some cases for preventative health guidance. Because they can indicate potential problems and pre dispositions.
There!Blush
I am not usually woo at all, but I do kind of believe in astrology.

iklboo · 25/02/2015 19:06

What about us poor bastards born on the cusp?? (Swoon)

ErrolTheDragon · 25/02/2015 19:13

MaidOfStars - I've got more science degrees in my marital bed than the 'science and technology' comittee (and we manage to fit an MBA in too). Grin

Remarkable. An MP whose grip on matters scientific seems to be on a par with his grip on the English language. He's like Humpty in Alice - thinks he can make words mean what he wants them to (racism, superstition, ignorance, prejudice).

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 25/02/2015 19:18

I'm not sure if I'm going to regret asking this, but here goes. What potential problems and predispositions can be predicted by birth charts?

Dawndonnaagain · 25/02/2015 19:21

Spring I'm sorry. Absolutely no scientific evidence of this at all. Stars are great for mapping where you are in the world, for looking pretty but as a diagnostic tool, not useful in any way whatsoever.

iklboo · 25/02/2015 19:25

If there's around 4 births every second in the world, does that (health being able to be extrapolated from birth charts) mean those 4 babies will have the EXACT same health issues? Irregardless of life circumstances & choices?

TheCatAteMyTaxReturn · 25/02/2015 19:33

Like all Virgos, I'm skeptical about astronomy.

I forgot to take my homeopathy tablets once, and nearly died of an overdose.

TheCatAteMyTaxReturn · 25/02/2015 19:35

lets try that one again

Like all Virgos, I'm skeptical about astrology.

I forgot to take my homeopathy tablets once, and nearly died of an overdose.

I've got a skeptical iPhone, as well, it seems Smile

PacificDogwood · 25/02/2015 19:38

Oh, I got you the first time, TheCat Grin

Like all Taurus I stubbornly disbelieve in astronomy.

Springheeled, I would genuinely like to know in what way astrology could help with preventative medicine.

Andrewofgg · 25/02/2015 19:38

Spring I've asked Matron to come and see to you.

The astro-loons believe that the Sun is in a particular constellation at a particular time. Now the only way you can see the sun and the stars at the same time is to be present at a total solar eclipse. And if you do, you will find that the Sun is not in the constellation where they say it is.

And whichever constellation the Sun or any planet is "in" that's an illusion - they are just in the same general direction, the very nearest star being more than a quarter of a million times as far away as the Sun. If you go up the Shard you see Wembley Stadium behind Regent's Park but that doesn't mean the Stadium is in the Park.

I could go on but I won't - you get the idea which is that there is nothing in it. It's bollocks. Total and utter bollocks. Bollocks of the largest and hairiest variety. High grade BULLSHIT!

TheCatAteMyTaxReturn · 25/02/2015 19:48

Pacific all the people born between June 22 - July 22 probably need chemo

PacificDogwood · 25/02/2015 19:58

Oh crap, we'll run out

And that includes my dad, but not my mum who was born within 3 days of him Confused

Springheeled · 25/02/2015 19:58

I knew I would regret it- I'm off back to the Middle Ages Smile

PacificDogwood · 25/02/2015 20:00

No, please don't go.

I am genuinely interested to know more Smile
I am not being sarky, honest.

PacificDogwood · 25/02/2015 20:00

I won't pretend that you will be able to convince me, but I'd like to know where this idea comes from that 'the stars' can influence things like health.
Honest interest.
