To be so furious with amazon

I rarely shop online but wanted to get dd1 an art set for her birthday, so used dh's account to buy one. While comparing items it popped up asking me if I would like a month's free trial with amazon prime. I didn't know what this meant so asked dh and he said to avoid it since a free trial will lead to ongoing hassle from them, so I immediately closed what i was looking at and avoided anything that had a prime logo against it.

The next day dh was annoyed because he got an email welcoming him to a free trial with amazon prime and wanted to know why I'd done it. But I didn't, it literally popped up when I clicked on one item and then I closed it a few minutes later without clicking on anything. We read the email in detail which just said about the free month and mentioned nothing of signing up properly, so he just said that he'd have to deal with any pestering correspondence when it came.

I have now discovered, a month later, that £79 has been taken from our bank account and dh has an email welcoming him to a year's worth of amazon prime. Seriously I feel like I've been mugged in the street! We did not agree to this at all. Can I do anything to stop it? I can't afford this at all and basically means the art set I bought cost £100!

If you haven't used Prime since the money was taken you can claim it back - pretty easy to do through Amazon - don't panic!

Walkingonsunshine00 · 24/02/2015 07:22

Sounds like your accounts been hacked, change passwords, contact Amazon/your bank

sandgrown · 24/02/2015 07:23

This has happened to.lots of people.Have a look on the Martin Lewis MSE website or just contact Amazon and ask them to cancel the membership.

Norfolknway · 24/02/2015 07:23

I think you can. I did something similar.

I changed it to the monthly version 6.99 pm then cancelled that - they refunded the 79 quid too.

that Was in January, within a few days of noticing mind.

they are buggers for it, aren't they?!

LordEmsworth · 24/02/2015 07:23

See here for how to cancel

TTTatty · 24/02/2015 07:23

I don't think it has - you probably had signed up, you could have searched through Amazon and cancelled Prime but as I said if you haven't used it you can cancel now and get a refund

WD41 · 24/02/2015 07:23

You haven't been hacked, you've inadvertently signed up for a trial.

Ring them and they will refund

SoupDragon · 24/02/2015 07:23

If you have not used it since the trial ended, they will refund you the money.

I suspect that you chose "free next day delivery" at checkout and didn't read the part that said this was Amazon Prime.

TBH, I always take the free trial. In my experience, it is clear that yet will automatically be renewed at the end for a fee and it is very clear that you can cancel this right now and still have your free month. I have used the free trial many many times and have not had a single hassling email or any trouble whatsoever.

SEmyarse · 24/02/2015 07:23

Thankyou so much

You do need to follow a couple of steps to join, i took my 40 day trial in nov/dec to get free delivery for christmas, it was a very straightforward process and cancelling was easy too (i set a reminder on my calendar)

Either the time you speak of wasn't the actual time one of you signed up for it or there has been a mistake at amazon's end. Either way I would have been contacting them at the time but you need to contact amazon.

CrazyRainbowLady · 24/02/2015 07:23

Phone them up and get them to cancel it. Same thing happened to me and I got my refund within a couple of minutes.

RandomNPC · 24/02/2015 07:24

Amazon are quite clear about T&Cs, so YABU. That said, here's what to about it:

SoupDragon · 24/02/2015 07:25

avoided anything that had a prime logo against it

You don't need to do this. All that means is that the Prime next day delivery is available on that item, not that you need to be a Prime member or anything.

GoofyIsACow · 24/02/2015 07:25

30 day obviously and cross post x 1million!

gamerchick · 24/02/2015 07:26

Amazon prime is also dead crap.

Do you have a card hooked up? I took mine off and just use the prepaid gift cards. It's saved me a fortune.

BestZebbie · 24/02/2015 07:27

For future reference, you may have accidentally done it during checkout if the delivery option came preselected as something like 'Free, with a trial of Amazon Prime' and you didn't deselect that and pick some other option.

MissDuke · 24/02/2015 07:29

I have read this on here before so you are not alone - although I honestly don't understand how it can be done by accident! Also, in the email it clearly states that you can immediately cancel it so that you get the free month, and it stops then with out charge. Did you not do this? I have used the trial several times and always found the instructions on doing this very clear, and have always cancelled the day I took out the trial.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/02/2015 07:30

Also, have your own account in your own name, not your husabands.

YouTheCat · 24/02/2015 07:31

It will have been something that you had to 'untick' rather than tick. Don't worry, you can cancel and get your money back.

I got accidentally signed up to Prime and didn't notice for 6 months and they still refunded me.

SEmyarse · 24/02/2015 07:32

Soupdragon, after my husband made me aware of the prime thing I was ridiculously careful to avoid anything that said prime on it. I literally read every tiny word I could find. The only contact I had with prime was the first item I clicked on and then closed which had a logo against it.

I feel very shaken, which is absurd! I discovered this at midnight last night, and to try and calm down I went for a walk around our town. It struck me as ludicrous that I'm 100% confident going anywhere alone at night, but what feels like a silent mugging unseen in my own front room has made me feel so vulnerable.

i'm aware this is a massive overreaction, but I'm a bit of an odd one anyway.

They did this to me, £79 the week before Christmas! Ouch Confused
Amazon are buggers for this but are great for cancelling and refunding straight away.

VeryStressedMum · 24/02/2015 07:35

I signed up for the free trial and Amazon immediately took £79 out but they refunded me when I called them.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/02/2015 07:36

Maybe it wasn't you?

LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/02/2015 07:38

I'm a prime member and you do have to sign up, or at least you did last year. I suggest maybe your husband made the mistake?

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 24/02/2015 07:38

I did the same click-click- SHIIIIT- though luckily I noticed and cancelled straight away. Used the free month to order loads of little bits n bobs Grin
