To be so furious with amazon

I rarely shop online but wanted to get dd1 an art set for her birthday, so used dh's account to buy one. While comparing items it popped up asking me if I would like a month's free trial with amazon prime. I didn't know what this meant so asked dh and he said to avoid it since a free trial will lead to ongoing hassle from them, so I immediately closed what i was looking at and avoided anything that had a prime logo against it.

The next day dh was annoyed because he got an email welcoming him to a free trial with amazon prime and wanted to know why I'd done it. But I didn't, it literally popped up when I clicked on one item and then I closed it a few minutes later without clicking on anything. We read the email in detail which just said about the free month and mentioned nothing of signing up properly, so he just said that he'd have to deal with any pestering correspondence when it came.

I have now discovered, a month later, that £79 has been taken from our bank account and dh has an email welcoming him to a year's worth of amazon prime. Seriously I feel like I've been mugged in the street! We did not agree to this at all. Can I do anything to stop it? I can't afford this at all and basically means the art set I bought cost £100!

I get that you signed up accidentally, but when you husband got the email about the free trial, why didn't he cancel it right away? I'd blame him. Smile He got the email, he knew you'd be charged if you didn't cancel.

Amazon Prime is worth every penny, IMO. For us it would be a bargain if it was twice the price.

Have you phoned up Amazon SEmyarse? You might get a pleasant surprise that this mess can be sorted out without much fuss and also, if that's done, that using Amazon is a more straightforward and reliable experience than you currently think.

Looking at the thread in general I'm not sure what benefit there is in other posters looking down their noses at someone who has an anxiety-based problem.

I've done as you (collectively) said, and it says it's refunding me. Thankyou everyone. How long will that take?

It's not security that stresses me about computers generally, it's the fact that there seems to be stuff that i can't see or define that screws up my thought processes so badly that i can't function. I have learnt to use mums net in the form of a book. it's fairly predictable and I can click on things I can see and read them, but I really struggle with concepts of other things and I don't know what they are or whether I'm supposed to do anything about them.

It's not just computers. I've given up watching TV completely because I cannot fathom why there are 2 remotes despite it being explained to me 80 billion times, and I find it so stressful to operate that I can't concentrate on the programme. I'm also very bad with phones. People think it's hysterical that I've memorised everyone's phone numbers because I can't work out how to do the name thing and I can't text at all although I can read them.

So I think a lot of the stress is knowing how bloody thick I must be since everyone else can do this stuff.

I agree with nauticant, just phone Amazon and get the refund sorted. You'll feel so much better.

I was told 2-3 business days SEmyarse so you should know by the end of the week. I'll post back here when I get my money back since we cancelled on the same day Smile.

Have you thought about doing a European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) course? They have beginner up to advanced levels of training in all sorts of digital skills. It might help - I know a number of people who've found them really useful. I had a look online and The Chartered Institute for IT has a listings page where you can find a course in your area.

Oh and you're not thick by the way. You just haven't learned this yet!

Thanks for you op

You are just old fashioned ;)

Shame we are kind of forced these days to use a computer/phone.

Sorry, OP, but I have to say that giving up watching TV completely, because there are 2 remotes, does seem to be a bit unusual. Have you always felt like this or has it got worse?
