would you allow a human blood contaminated dishwasher back in your kitchen

I recently had a 6 month old dishwasher repaired under warranty. The contracted repairer returned the dishwasher one week later covered with bloody hand prints. There is also a small amount of blood inside the dishwasher. We were not home when the dishwasher was returned. The repairer does not remember specifically bleeding on our appliance but said he could have because he "cuts himself all the time". When we went to the store we bought the dishwasher from they were quite dismissive of our concerns about blood borne disease. Is it unreasonable not to want to use a kitchen appliance contaminated with a strangers blood?

Tbh I'd just put a glove on and clean it up. Think you are being a bit paranoid. A bleach wipe would solve all bbv concerns and running the dishwasher would strikes the I side and contents.

kissmyheathenass · 20/02/2015 10:43

Yuk, no, I couldn't. But I am very squeamish. I'm sure from a h&s POV, a hot wash would sort it.

TheIronGnome · 20/02/2015 10:45

I'm not a fussy person in terms of general cleanliness etc but I do find that pretty grim tbh.

dementedpixie · 20/02/2015 10:46

clean the outside and run an empty hot wash to clean the inside. What do you want them to do about it?

BarbarianMum · 20/02/2015 10:47

Wouldn't bother me, id just wipe it and let it run a cycle to clean inside.

AnnieMorel · 20/02/2015 10:47

I'd be a bit pissed off that it was returned in that state, but I wouldn't be worried about using it, once wiped down.

Quiero · 20/02/2015 10:48

That is grim. I wouldn't be concerned about disease to be fair but it's just a bit yucky isn't it? And just poor service on their behalf really.

seaoflove · 20/02/2015 10:49

I wouldn't be concerned about hygiene per se, but it's totally unacceptable to dump a dishwasher covered in blood on your doorstep and expect you to be fine with it!

Silvercatowner · 20/02/2015 10:49

Germs don't leap out at you. Put on a pair of gloves and blast it with Domestos and boiling water.

StockingFullOfCoal · 20/02/2015 10:51

Thats grim, I'd be furious.

Camolips · 20/02/2015 10:52

Using the dishwasher after a good clean wouldn't bother me but the story of 'always cutting himself' sounds dodgy! If it was actually covered in bloody handprints then his hands must have been touching an awful lot of blood! Are you sure he hadn't just murdered someone? Grin I'm surprised he didn't attempt to clean it up if the prints were obvious. And have you checked your floors? There could be blood everywhere!

EnlightenedOwl · 20/02/2015 10:53

When the guy was fitting our bathroom he must have cut himself badly as I found one or two bloody handprints on the wall!!
I cleaned them off with Dettol but he was mortified when I mentioned it to him and in turn I was mortified as I wasn't complaining I was just worried about what damage he had done to himself - a very severe cut as it turned out. Nasty.
Anyway. Stick it on a hot cycle wipe down the outsides with a bit of Dettol job done. Not ideal but these things happen.

Nomama · 20/02/2015 10:55

The metal on those machines can be lethally sharp - dad was always slicing his hands and arms. You can't feel it and it bleeds like a scalp wound - think really big papercut without the sting.

So it is possible he didn't know he had cut himself.

Just clean it... it will be fine!

pinkrocker · 20/02/2015 10:57

This needs to be on the EE thread so the scriptwriters see it for potential murdering scenarios. Grin
Do a hot wash on it. Wipe the outsides with Dettol. It will be fine, although I agree it's grim that the engineer didn't even notice he'd bled everywhere.

Well I'd have been grossed out by that too op and would have called them to complain about the state it was returned. Who the hell would think its OK to return it to you with bloody handprints on it and blood inside??? ( apart from your repairer ) I'd bleach it to within an inch of its life and run a couple of cycles through it for sure.

Royalsighness · 20/02/2015 11:02

That's disgusting. You wouldn't accept a top back from a tailors covered in blood and just wash it would you? It can be washed away but he should have done that himself. Really rank.

Jacana · 20/02/2015 11:05

Lots of blood in hospitals, you going to refuse treatments?

Clean the front, hot wash the inside, job done.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 20/02/2015 11:22

Your concern about disease, though I do understand it, you should wipe from your brain. Disinfect the front, put it on a cleaning cycle for the inside. Operating theatres get loads of blood everywhere but once cleaned, are perfectly safe enough to open up a new person inside of.

Wouldn't be impressed about it being returned in that state though.

Cornettoninja · 20/02/2015 12:16

I didn't think blood borne diseases lasted very long outside the body?

I would have cleaned it off tbh and just done the hottest cycle before using it but can see why you'd be miffed.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/02/2015 12:19

I would just clean it, and strongly recommend to the company that they require their employees to wear appropriate PPE at all times...

JudgeRinderSays · 20/02/2015 13:35

Am I the only one feeling sorry for this poor guy who has butchered himself fixing your machine.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/02/2015 13:37

I would complain, totally unacceptable. It has been returned to you in a dirty condition and it has blood which can carry all sorts of disease. Did you take photos?

FiveLittlePeas · 20/02/2015 13:39

YABU, Just wipe with a cloth with bleach asnd get on with life.

Stinkylinky · 20/02/2015 13:41

It is grim and I would be a bit pissed that it was returned to me that way but a good clean would sort it
