would you allow a human blood contaminated dishwasher back in your kitchen

I recently had a 6 month old dishwasher repaired under warranty. The contracted repairer returned the dishwasher one week later covered with bloody hand prints. There is also a small amount of blood inside the dishwasher. We were not home when the dishwasher was returned. The repairer does not remember specifically bleeding on our appliance but said he could have because he "cuts himself all the time". When we went to the store we bought the dishwasher from they were quite dismissive of our concerns about blood borne disease. Is it unreasonable not to want to use a kitchen appliance contaminated with a strangers blood?

I would just clean it and use it. It'll be fine and much less hassle then complaining!

MadisonMontgomery · 20/02/2015 13:44

Bit bizarre but I'd just get the dettol out tbh

Um yes there is blood in hospitals. But I would expect hospital equipment to be sterilised properly in an autoclave.

It is quite grim of them.

CookieMonsterCrumbs · 20/02/2015 14:56

The equipment is but the operating table, floor and other in theatre equipment is just wiped down between cases. I work in operating theatres. They actually aren't that messy tbh.

Due to this I would just wipe it down and use it with appropriate cleaning solutions. But I practice advanced infection control every day.

Did you take any photographs of the bloody handprints? If so I would email them to the managing director of the company and tell him/her it's unacceptable. I would not be happy about this at all, personally. You shouldn't have to have a stranger's blood on your stuff regardless of whether it's a health hazard. It's beyond terrible customer service.

If you've been a hospital inpatient you're lying on a bed that's been shat, urinated, and bled all over. They get washed with normal detergent, and get bleached all over. The pillowcase and sheet, the same - washed with bleach. For the blood to harm you, you'd need an open and bleeding cut and you'd need to be actively be rubbing the blood from the dishwasher in. It's unhygienic, and poor presentation but it isn't dangerous and I wouldn't refuse to have it.

If they'd noticed it before they left it, and cleaned it off themselves, you'd have been none the wiser and would be using the dishwasher as normal now. Yes it is a bit gross to have to clean up blood from an unknown source but it won't kill you.

Report it to the company as returned in need of a clean, but yes, I'd wipe down and use it.

Stealthpolarbear · 20/02/2015 17:21

if it had been mixed with general grime youd never have known
