To think this is a bit dodgy and if so what do I do?

We have a CoOP near us and both DH and I use it separately for a variety of things...top ups on the shopping mainly.

Anyway...there's a lot of part time staff and one, relatively new guy in his 20s seems ok...not that friendly but whatever....last week I asked for cash back and he failed to give me the cash. I realised as I was getting ready to leave the till so said "Oh...you didn't give me the cash." he immediately gave it to me....didn't think anything of it and forgot all about it until just now when DH came back from there and the same guy had done it to him...

Dh had asked for cash back and then as he was ready to go, realised he'd not been given the money...so said "Can I have the money?" and the guy reached down and just produced it...he didn't have to open the drawer thing where they keep notes.

It was as though he'd got it out and then stashed it...ready to keep it himself.

AIBU to be suspicious now?

Report it to the manager, there will be cctv on the till.

Firesidetreat · 19/02/2015 20:44

The tills will have CCTV.

scratchandsniff · 19/02/2015 20:46

I'd report it, sounds suss to me.

MrsAlexanderSkarsgard · 19/02/2015 20:53

You must report it

RabbitSaysWoof · 19/02/2015 20:54

I would report.
I bought fish and chips once and the cashier just pushed one button which opened the till, blatantly just changed my note up and put the amount for the meal at the side of the till and me the change.
I felt too shy to confront, was going to call the shop and report him steeling from them but obviously could have been him answering the phone then forgot about it, but I do wish I'd said something customers usually end up paying towards losses in the long run.

RandomMess · 19/02/2015 20:54

Yes please report it.

Where are you OP? I'm in West Yorks. Same thing happened to me at my local Co-op. I reported it to the manager but I don't know if anything came of it, it was only a week or so ago...

Charlesroi · 19/02/2015 21:04

Absolutely report it as you'd have had no come back if you'd actually left the shop. He may just be forgetful in which case there's no harm done, or he may have done this to others.

ilovesooty · 19/02/2015 21:59

I'd also report it but as Derek said I don't see why his age is relevant.

MrsTawdry · 19/02/2015 22:08

Derek because he could be considered to be young and inexperienced. ...and I'm old and bitter or something. Wink

The manager of my local CoOp is only 24 , I think you can be young and experienced Wink

It does work both ways Derek - agreed.

Ijustworemytrenchcoat · 19/02/2015 23:30

Doesn't sound like he is just forgetful from the way you've described it. More opportunistic, hoping people will walk off and not realise. He didn't need to open the till to get the money/call a supervisor to get them to correct the error.

RudeBarbandCustard · 19/02/2015 23:39

Definitely sounds like he's nicking the money.

You really ought to report it.

seaoflove · 19/02/2015 23:42

That's very dodgy indeed. If he'd genuinely forgotten the cash would be in the till drawer. It's the perfect way to steal money, because when they count the cash at the end of the day his till will still balance.

When I was a student working at Sainsburys a young colleague was sacked for swiping his own Nectar card. This is way more serious.

MrsTawdry · 19/02/2015 23:51

If I say something and he's not...that could reflect badly on him though. SO I feel unsure about it really. What if I report, then they're all "Oh....yes...he's not been great so far...no proof of theft but even the customers don't like him..." and he gets the sack?

Can't I just wait a bit longer in case he does it again? Then maybe report him? Won't they catch him at it anyway? Cameras and all that.

OP posts:
RudeBarbandCustard · 20/02/2015 00:08

Hmm couldn't you report it without saying which member of staff you suspect?

Something like you and your DH have both had incidents with cashback, but you're unable to remember which member of staff it was, but suggest they take a look at their CCTV.

That way, all you're doing is alerting them. If they then find something when they look into it, it's not your fault.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 20/02/2015 00:09

You could raise it with the manager in a 'does he need more till training?' sort of way. Might ring some alarm bells if others have noted concerns.

Chippednailvarnish · 20/02/2015 00:14

The cameras in the supermarket I worked in were so sophisticated that they could read the serial numbers on bank notes.

If there were suspicions about a member of staff they would check the serial numbers of the notes in the till, film them and then if they saw anything dodgy, search them. Having notes that they could prove were in the till was apparently good evidence for a conviction...
Report him OP, if he is stealing the cameras will catch him.

Justmuddlingalong · 20/02/2015 00:17

Report him. Someone who can ill afford to lose money could be out of pocket. If he's guilty or innocent it will be investigated.

Firesidetreat · 20/02/2015 05:04

All CoOps get the receipts initialed. Seems odd yours doesn't.

FishWithABicycle · 20/02/2015 05:26

Definitely sounds dodgy, yes. As pp said report it without naming/describing the person so they are more vigilant and everyone gets the training /supervision to ensure all is well.
