To think this is a bit dodgy and if so what do I do?

We have a CoOP near us and both DH and I use it separately for a variety of things...top ups on the shopping mainly.

Anyway...there's a lot of part time staff and one, relatively new guy in his 20s seems ok...not that friendly but whatever....last week I asked for cash back and he failed to give me the cash. I realised as I was getting ready to leave the till so said "Oh...you didn't give me the cash." he immediately gave it to me....didn't think anything of it and forgot all about it until just now when DH came back from there and the same guy had done it to him...

Dh had asked for cash back and then as he was ready to go, realised he'd not been given the money...so said "Can I have the money?" and the guy reached down and just produced it...he didn't have to open the drawer thing where they keep notes.

It was as though he'd got it out and then stashed it...ready to keep it himself.

AIBU to be suspicious now?

It's up to his employers to suss out whether he's guilty or not OP. If he's not guilty of anything then he won't get sacked.

No point reporting it if you don't say who it is. They won't be able to comb through hundreds of hours of CCTV of every member of staff.

McKayz · 20/02/2015 06:21

I used to work in co-op. It's company policy to initial the receipt.

You need to report him. If he's forgetful he won't lose his job. But it wouldn't be fair to other people if you don't say something.

ftmsoon · 20/02/2015 06:33

Fire Our Coop doesn't get receipts initialed. But I agree with PPs, report him.

coolaschmoola · 20/02/2015 06:38

It's called skimming, and there are a variety of well known methods. This is one of them. Report him.

ILovePud · 20/02/2015 06:46

I can understand why you are hesitant to report him in-case it was an honest mistake (frankly I doubt it, the money was put to one side and it happened to both you and DH) and he loses his job. However please think about the other people he might scam from this point on, how would you feel if someone (or lots of someones) who desperately needed that money had it stolen?

SuggestmeaUsername · 20/02/2015 07:18

Contact their head office on 0161 834 1212 and get them to investigate.

Icimoi · 20/02/2015 07:22

Can you get a friend to go in and check him out? If it happens three times it's definitely beyond a simple mistake.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 20/02/2015 07:33

Report it. This is the lowest form of skimming as its stealing directly from customers.

MojaveWanderer123 · 20/02/2015 08:41

They don't get you to sign the receipts in my one or my mums one either.
Definitely report it though.
You remembered, someone else might not.

RudeBarbandCustard · 20/02/2015 08:52

Just realised that in doing this, he's actually potentially stealing from the customer rather than the Co-Op isn't he? Because you've paid for it and he's hoping you'll forget to collect it. (sorry that was me being dim)

In that case, it's even more important to report it, like others have said, he could be stealing from people who can't afford it.

Don't feel bad about reporting. Don't be accusatory, just said you and your DH both had incidents and you're concerned about a potential problem. Like pp have said, they'll investigate and if he's doing nothing wrong he'll be fine.

OnBlueDolphinStreet · 20/02/2015 08:56

Just think of vulnerable shoppers such as OAP's with memory problems.

Please tell the Co-OP what happened.

AmserGwin · 20/02/2015 09:46

Yes I would report it too

MrsTawdry · 20/02/2015 10:25

Now the receipt signing has been mentioned I've remembered that I have been asked to do that in the past...but not by him.

Cash back scams snopes.com/fraud/atm/cashback.asp

seaoflove · 20/02/2015 10:37

The receipt signing is just to prove that you've received the money though; so you can't return and say "I forgot my cashback!" and claim double. In this scenario it's kind of irrelevant, because it's the employee stealing from the customer, instead of the customer stealing from the shop.

bettyboop1970 · 20/02/2015 10:39

Sainsburys had a spate of cash back scams a couple of years ago.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 20/02/2015 10:39

Do report it!
Similar thing happened in our 7 - 11 store.... Woman almost got away with it with an old chap in front of me... Didn't have to open til... I prompted him... My she looked fed up... Then she was being really unpleasant about old folk... I reported her.. Cctv.. Sacked..

TwinkieTwinkle · 20/02/2015 10:40

For those saying Co-op make you initial receipts when getting cash back, I don't think that's a nation wide rule. I use three separate co-ops and have never been asked to do that.

DeliciousMonster · 20/02/2015 10:45

Whereas I always have been.

OP - it can't be just forgetfulness if it happened to both you and your partner. Report it and do it before he scams some old ladies out of their weekend spends.

0x530x610x750x630x79 · 20/02/2015 11:12

if he doesn't have to open the till, he is keeping it.

MrsTawdry · 20/02/2015 11:54

Thank you all I will email their head office now.

OP posts:
MrsTawdry · 20/02/2015 12:00

Done. I said that I was aware there could be an innocent explanation but thought it best I let them know in case there had been any concerns about him raised already.

HoldingtheFortress · 20/02/2015 12:01

Well done OP. They can look into it now and it won't be your fault if he gets fired.

RedSoloCup · 20/02/2015 16:10

Hi, as an employee I would definitely call the manager and have a chat, a cashier should not even be able to open the till without calling someone to do so, something isn't right, please phone and speak to the manager and air your concerns, my store would appreciate this.
