Apparently, my son's school does rugby as part of PE at age 7. I think children should have a choice about participating in contact sports...AIBU?

It'll be non-contact at that age.

Welshmaenad · 19/02/2015 20:31

Touch rugby, non contact. My 4 year old plays it. He'll be fine.

26Point2Miles · 19/02/2015 20:31

It's not going to be dangerous! Give the schools some credit

Lazaretto · 19/02/2015 20:31

Really? ! Ha ha now I feel stupid. How can you have non contact rugby?

Tag Rugby Smile

Lazaretto · 19/02/2015 20:32

So when does it become contact based? Do they have a choice then?

Yabu. It will be touch rugby. Very safe sport. It's fun and an interesting team game.

Lazaretto · 19/02/2015 20:33

I'm reassured...Thank you :)

They have a band attached or threaded through somehow and that gets pulled off. He will be ok; my son survived despite dreading it ( a bit of a wuss at that age)

Lazaretto · 19/02/2015 20:34

I guess I'm thinking back to when I was at school...

primary kids where I am don't ever do proper contact rugby. It's not even an option.

Monroe · 19/02/2015 20:35

My DS plays for our local rugby club. It was non contact until they turned 8.

He now plays full contact with head gear and mouth guard and he absolutely loves it.

At 7 they are concentrating more on learning the rules of the game and basic skills like how to throw and catch the ball.

colleysmill · 19/02/2015 20:35

Dh reckons it's non contact til age 10 if not 12 - ds plays (5) and loves it.

Lazaretto · 19/02/2015 20:36

Do the girls play it too?

OP posts:
colleysmill · 19/02/2015 20:36

Or 8 even!!! Grin

Sparklingbrook · 19/02/2015 20:36

My two loved Tag rugby, hated the full contact version later on though.

PippiLicious · 19/02/2015 20:36

Tag rugby at 7. It's great to watch and they love it.

They build up to contact rugby with tackles, scrums etc but it's done really well. My dses (9 and 10) both play rugby at school. They wear scrum caps and armour (ds1 especially) and love it.

Lottiedoubtie · 19/02/2015 20:37

Depends on the school, but at primary generally yes.

Lazaretto · 19/02/2015 20:37

My ds is very very passive...but I guess you never know.

OP posts:
Lazaretto · 19/02/2015 20:38

So they get a choice when it becomes the contact version?

MrsPnut · 19/02/2015 20:39

My dd plays contact rugby for a club now she is 8 but she started playing tag at just turned 4.

At school they play tag rugby right through to year 6 and at some schools into year 7 as well before learning contact. Mini rugby is mixed until they reach 12 and then they separate into boys and girls.

partialderivative · 19/02/2015 20:39

Why didn't you check this out with the school before posting on AIBU?

18yearstooold · 19/02/2015 20:41

Dd's primary play contact from yr 5 but they are very strict on where they can tackle, only one person can be in contact with the player carrying the ball and they can only play with their yr group

PE lessons are all about skills, games take place in a voluntary after school club

Sparklingbrook · 19/02/2015 20:42

It's half term partial. OP wanted some opinions, nothing wrong with that. Confused

edwinbear · 19/02/2015 20:42

My ds has been playing tag rugby since he was 2, he is now 5. It is a brilliant sport for team work, throwing, catching, tactics and he has become a very fast runner through it. Most importantly, he loves it.
