To not want to take Metronidazole

Have been given this by my GP under strict instructions not to drink alcohol (she suggested to start taking if after the weekend) as it can cause you to vomit violently.

Stupidly I have Googled and the side effects do not look good at all Shock

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Can I go back and ask for something else?

Is it for bv? in which case I'd give balance activ a go first. Just guessing I may be wrong Grin

This anti bio absolutely floored me. I was nauseous and dizzy and spent the course in bed, but they did the job.

AntiHop · 19/02/2015 19:52

I was prescribed this and another antibiotic for about 10 days after giving birth. I had no side effects. Is that the one you're supposed to take with food? If that's what it says on the label make sure you do that.

Emetophobe here, had absolutely no nausea when I took a course of Metronidazole a few weeks ago. Just make sure to take your tablet after food Smile

I took it for tooth abscess more than once. The only bad thing I noticed was violent diarrhoea.

PrimalLass · 19/02/2015 20:58

Give it to me. It gave me the shits and I lost loads of weight.

PrimalLass · 19/02/2015 21:01

3 courses in 6 months got rid of my baby weight

I took it three weeks ago for a tooth infection - felt a bit grotty for a day but that may have been the infection? No nausea or vomiting at all.

wanttosqueezeyou · 19/02/2015 21:13

It made me feel very sick for 24 hours then absolutely fine for the duration.

I drank alcohol 24 hours after the last tablet. No problems at all.

I don't think they give it if there's an alternative.

I finished a course this week for dental issues. I'm allergic to penicillin so was offered metronidazole or erythromycin. Erythromycin makes me feel like I have flu so I opted for metronidazole as it's not given me trouble before, though my dentist was surprised.

I felt fine on it but did avoid alcohol including the 48 hours after the last dose. I did quite like the instruction on not driving if I started hearing or seeing things though!

I've had it twice, it made me feel so ill both times that they changed to a different antibiotic. The anti sickness drugs I already have didn't stop the nausea and dry wretching.

WellThatsLife · 19/02/2015 22:50

had to take dd1 off a course today as it was making her feel so ill, severe headache, nausea to the pint of retching, dizziness and neck pain. Still on amoxicillin so hoping that settle things down. She had an accident when she was 8 and badly damaged her front teeth, she now has a chronic infection behind one of them for which she going to need hospital treatment and unfortunately some root canal work she had to have done last week caused the infection to flare up

trixymalixy · 19/02/2015 22:55

I had no side effects when I took it. I could have done with a bit of weight loss too!
