To not want to take Metronidazole

Weathergames · 19/02/2015 14:25

Have been given this by my GP under strict instructions not to drink alcohol (she suggested to start taking if after the weekend) as it can cause you to vomit violently.

Stupidly I have Googled and the side effects do not look good at all Shock

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Can I go back and ask for something else?

I've taken it several times due to crippling dental infections and never had any side effects.

I've also drunk alcohol on it without any effects either. The first time because I forgot I wasn't supposed to and the second time because I didn't have any problems the first time.

Weathergames · 19/02/2015 16:24

Thanks To the GP Smile

And moorbahtwat hahaha!!!!! Grin

I am really really scared of feeling sick/being sick think that's why I am panicking and everyone who has written a "review" said they were ill/felt ill but then I guess I have to ask the question what kind of person writes a review about medication!!

peggyundercrackers · 19/02/2015 16:30

ive taken it a few times and never had any side effects, they cleared up my issues very quickly though and as such were very good.

IMeanReally · 19/02/2015 16:36

I'm allergic to penecillin so I've had metronidazole twice I think for tooth problems. It was fine. I mean I felt lousy the first day or so - sore and tired and out of it but I'd been feeling like that before I started the metronidazole and that was no different. I suspect it was the codeine I was taking for pain.

ratspeaker · 19/02/2015 16:52

You have to remember that some of the people writing the reviews may have been feeling sick/nauseous due to the infection anyway.

Avoid anything containing alcohol, that includes liqueur chocolates and mouth wash as well as alcoholic drinks.

Weathergames · 19/02/2015 16:55

Even if I spit the mouthwash out?! Gawd I hadn't thought about that!!!

I've had to take this for a gum infection as I'm allergic to penicillin, I found that I got an upset stomach and furry tongue. Recommend eating pro-biotic yogurts for the latter!

123Jump · 19/02/2015 17:43

I had these for a tooth abscess once. I had two sips of alcohol and thought I was having a heart attack.
Don't drink any alcohol.
Otherwise I was fine on them.

Miracularity · 19/02/2015 17:46

Hrtft but - I've had it a few times and each time it was the only anti-b that would have worked. I was absolutely fine but you really cannot drink alcohol.

BUT - did you know that it's possible to take one huge dose of it rather than a course? It's slightly less effective but that's what I generally do. I do make sure that I'm alcohol-clear for 24 hours before and after

IsabeauMichelle · 19/02/2015 17:46

All drugs have side effects. If anyone has ever had one side effect, ever, they have to list it. That doesn't mean everyone will have the same ones, it's luck of the draw tbh.

However - do NOT drink any alcohol whatsoever, you will seriously regret it.

ThingummyJigg · 19/02/2015 17:47

Ah.

It seems that a number of people have taken metronidazole for dental reasons. This leads me to conclude that the biscuit experiment might be never ending due to an AB/biscuit/cavity/AB cycle. This will only be broken once all teeth have fallen though, joyfully, the experiment could still continue as biscuits can still be eaten toothless, though a good tea-dunking might be necessary.

Garibaldi. Will add to list. Also fig rolls. I love a fig roll.

Serious point to OP : ask a pharmacist if you can take an anti emetic with the ABs. There is one called Buccastem available over the counter, meant for migraines but it might be OK to take with mitronidazole. Must ask pharmacist first, and possibly only use short term for when at work.

Mrsmorton · 19/02/2015 17:48

You shouldn't use mouthwash that's got alcohol in. It's a poor choice and I don't think it will be long before they ban it all together. Swilling alcohol around your mouth increases your risk of oral cancer, just like drinking alcohol does.

Hope you get on ok with the metronidazole.

wowfudge · 19/02/2015 17:48

First time I had these I felt rough as well as having to avoid alcohol and it took a few days afterwards to feel back to normal. Second time I got some probiotic capsules from Holland & Barrett. Not sure if it was placebo effect, but I didn't feel half as ropey.

Penguinsaresmall · 19/02/2015 17:52

I had them for a tooth abscess too - I was told by the pharmacist not to drink, but then a few days later it was Friday and I forgot. I had a large G&T (or two) and was absolutely fine - not sure what that says about me Blush

I remembered the next morning and felt a bit Shock but assumed if it was going to do anything bad to me it would have happened by then!

TweedAddict · 19/02/2015 17:52

No side effects that I've noticed and ive been on them for 6months at a high dose. Great thing is they are working!

Iggity · 19/02/2015 17:54

i've had metronidazole a few times for dental infections and never had any nausea. In fact, it wouldn't even occur to me to check the side effects section and I'm a pharmacologist so ought to be more interested! I would expect most drugs to cause nausea, not necessarily commonly but there are always certain people who are more sensitive.

laughingmyarseoff · 19/02/2015 18:02

I've taken them and no issues. I've known a few people to also take with no problem, the only one who had an issue-projectile vomiting- drank on them despite being advised not to.

Maybe start taking and if any issue then stop? They don't stay in your system long and unless you are allergic any side effect will be temporary. Don't drink on them though.

SocialMediaAddict · 19/02/2015 18:03

They cleared the worst dental infection I've ever had. I was close to being hospitalised.

I didn't drink for 36 hours after the last tablet and I was fine.

SocialMediaAddict · 19/02/2015 18:03

Don't have it on an empty stomach and drink a large glass of water with it.

Roussette · 19/02/2015 18:14

Likewise Social. I had worst dental infection ever. Huge swollen face like a one sided hamster, pain like I have never experienced in my life. It was the only thing to clear it up and no side effects.

I have taken it more than once too with problems. I don't drink alcohol while on it but did after. You can google anything and find horror stories, just don't google!

Roussette · 19/02/2015 18:15

*with no problems!

OhFlippityBolax · 19/02/2015 18:29

I've had the via IV and they made me incredibly ill and left me with cdiff BUT they saved my life so I'd say take them

PunkrockerGirl · 19/02/2015 18:34

Ds2 had to take it a few months ago for a gum infection. He was fine, no side effects.

pepperfish · 19/02/2015 18:43

Yes, I've taken it for a case of giardiasis. Lordy, was I glad I took it! Worked within 24 hours, felt fine throughout entire course.

World war 3 was going on in my stomach - I couldn't have cared less about the very small chance of side effects!!

Your doctors know what they are doing :-)

tshirtsuntan · 19/02/2015 18:44

I took it for a dental issue, no alcohol, it was fine.
