to not feel guilty about calling in sick, despite I probably could of managed it

pigglewiggle · 19/02/2015 08:50

I was just exhausted this morning, couldn't face it. I won't get any money for today, there is no one I will be holding up, I will answer any emails that come to me and need a response.

I've previously been signed off a few years ago when I was totally exhausted.

Depends on your nature. For me calling in sick is a last resort and I would have to be really unwell or able to function.

I have a very decent sickness record and it helped me get my last job as I am rarely off.

TheFecklessFairy · 19/02/2015 10:14

Hope you don't use 'could of' in your work emails Grin

InfinitySeven · 19/02/2015 10:18

It's a personal thing.

I feel racked with guilt if I start feeling better in the afternoon and could have gone in. I very rarely take time off. I do love my job, though, and my clients, and I feel like I'm letting them and my colleagues down if I'm not there - even though it has no direct impact on them.

I don't think my conscience would let me take a day off for exhaustion, but then I have fibromyalgia so I'm often exhausted with nothing left to give, and I've learnt to deal with it. I don't know how I'd be if that wasn't true.

I can't say YABU not to feel guilty, though. It's just a personality thing.

OhMrGove · 19/02/2015 10:19

YANBU to not feel guilty about calling in sick..

YABVU to write 'could of'

zippyandbungle · 19/02/2015 10:23

Sorry op this isn't about you www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2311461-Unashamedly-a-TAAT

Lovemycatsandkids · 19/02/2015 10:23

No op if you feel like that take some time off. Why were you signed off last time?

Ignore the language twats.

Maybe you need to chat to your GP?

SorchaN · 19/02/2015 10:30

If you've been signed off in the past when you've been exhausted, then it's a good thing to be aware that you're becoming exhausted before you get to the point of becoming unable to function. Only you can know whether you're well enough to work, but answering emails is work and could contribute to your exhaustion...

I'm really interested in InfinitySeven's response, because I also have a health condition that leaves me 'with nothing left to give'... How do you deal with it, Infinity? Genuine question - I'm always trying to find new ways to manage this aspect of life...

SweetValentine · 19/02/2015 10:32

Fuck answering emails. You're not being paid and you need to rest Flowers

And fuck the grammar posts too. Why don't you go and be clever dicks somewhere else?

Lovemycatsandkids · 19/02/2015 10:35

Yes drives me mad when all a poster can contribute to a thread, where the op sounds really down, is criticise the language.

Such a stupid pathetic twatty response. Grow up.

TheFecklessFairy · 19/02/2015 10:44

Look on it as a steep learning curve and be thankful someone cares Lovemy !!

Davsmum · 19/02/2015 10:44

No point in feeling guilty - if you feel exhausted and unable to cope today then you need the day off. I think you should try to find out why you feels so exhausted though and try to sort that out.

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/02/2015 10:47

I never go off sick if I'm not, consequently don't feel bad if I do need to take time off.
You're the best judge of how you feel,op.
Get some rest or you'll be wide open to catching all the lurgies around in your run down state.

Groovee · 19/02/2015 10:49

I have fibromyalgia, if I am exhausted then it's not a good combination when you work in nursery. I become too dangerous for my own good and those children deserve better than to have me about.

Knowing how to pace yourself is good. I've recently only been doing 7.5 hours a week but about to double that next week and I am trying hard not to dread it.

Hope you get a good rest.

slightlyworriednc · 19/02/2015 10:55

YANBU. If you don't normally take lots of time off, then you must be feeling pretty low to ring in today. It's hard to see illness as relevant when we can't describe the physical symptoms, but sometimes you need a break.
I've done the same as you before.

Lovemycatsandkids · 19/02/2015 10:56

learning curve

Been here for 8 years and it still annoys me. However you did use a smiley so wasn't really referring to you.

A bit of sensitivity though.

mildlyacquiescent · 19/02/2015 10:59

Doubt OP is a native speaker (using "despite" instead of "even though"- classic ESL mistake) so pulling her up on her language is more than usually shitty.

Get well soon, OP. Flowers

Cantbelievethisishappening · 19/02/2015 11:02

YANBU
I hate that feeling of utter exhaustion. Poor you

YABVU to write 'could of'
ODFOD Hmm

Jackiebrambles · 19/02/2015 11:03

If they aren't paying you, definitely don't answer emails! Rest up.

MetallicBeige · 19/02/2015 11:10

Yanbu op. Hope you're feeling better soon.

I've reported the grammar police for their tedium pa rudeness. :)

OllyBJolly · 19/02/2015 11:16

I think it's much better to have a day off, rebuild your energy and strength and go back to work refreshed and energised. If you're that ill or tired you won't be fully productive anyway, and won't be contributing as much to the team.

This is my beef about "absence management programmes". It would be so much healthier for everyone if people were encouraged to take a day off when they needed it rather than come to work with colds and infect everyone else, or end up with stress, exhaustion etc and need a much longer absence.

Hope you feel better soon.

IonaMumsnet · 19/02/2015 11:18

Morning all. Now then. This pedants' revolt is all getting a bit tedious, isn't it? The OP's off sick, too! Give her a day off, eh? Can we have responses only to the OP's original question from now on and try and drag this thread back on track? Pretty please?

I could proper kiss you iona Grin

OP get yourself back to bed and have a catch up on some sleep. Being tired really sucks.

OhMrGove · 19/02/2015 20:16

Gosh sorry. Didn't mean to be a twat. Was meant tongue in cheek, shall slap my pedantry next time it rears it's hideous head

Hope you feel better op

pointythings · 19/02/2015 21:30

I think there are times when you have to listen to your body. Far better to take time, get better and come back 100% than to soldier on, get iller than you might otherwise have done and need more time off in the end. Only you can make that judgement. I've been on the wrong end of it more than once - last time I was about to get it wrong, my manager told me not to be an idiot and that she would send me home if I came in. I was grateful.

Look after yourself.
