To ask if you have a carbon monoxide alarm and if no, why not?

Would Ibu to ask if any of you have gas but don't have an alarm? Saw a poster on here whose daughter died from carbon monoxide and our alarm saved our families life (we hadnt always had one, we used to have the colour changing dots which wouldn't of notified us like the alarm did). Ours was £20 but you can get them cheaper

The charity the MNer set up
Katie Haines trust.
Seen sad stories too of families dying on holiday from faulty boilers or smouldering bbq's

We have one. It was bought as the boiler we had was fitted with the house, and had work done on it. Also, the arrival of dd1 had me paranoid a bit. It didn't cost much, I think similar to a smoke alarm.

summerlovingliz · 18/02/2015 19:19

We also have one and would not be without!

HelenaDove · 18/02/2015 19:21

We bought one too. Essential

Kittymautz · 18/02/2015 19:22

A friend works in a department that sends out emergency gas engineers. She has told me some truly dreadful stories about CM. She says she dreads it when there's a CM callout, gas escapes are generally much less dangerous.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 18/02/2015 19:22

Also bought one after reading threads on Mumsnet...

SomeSortOfDeliciousBiscuit · 18/02/2015 19:23

We have one. We had a carbon monoxide leak in our first house and the previous tenant had left their alarm. I was heavily pregnant at the time, our landlord was a complete cock and I shudder to think what could have happened.

After that, we've had a new one for every house we've lived in. I have one that has an unchangeable battery which will expire in seven years, which is when you're supposed to replace the alarm.

londonrach · 18/02/2015 19:23

No gas!!!

Flossiechops · 18/02/2015 19:23

We have one too. We moved house last June - that and smoke alarms were the first things we did the day after we moved in. Friends of ours had a house fire last year & were saved by the smoke alarm. It's a no brainer!

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/02/2015 19:23

We have one and I bought DD one when she went away to uni.

HamishBamish · 18/02/2015 19:24

We have one and always take one on holiday too, even when camping. It wasn't something we thought about before having children, but we wouldn't be without one now. As important as a smoke alarm imo.

sadcasetoday · 18/02/2015 19:24

We have 2. I know a woman who lost several close family members to CO2. Horrible.

ilovechristmas1 · 18/02/2015 19:24

i have one (open fire) cost me £13 from argos

we have them colour changing tabs for the boiler, once the tabs run out i can move the proper monitor to the boiler as we wont be using the fire in the summer

Koalafications · 18/02/2015 19:25

We ad one in our flat before as there was a carbon monoxide leak in one of the nearby flats.

Thanks for reminding me, I need to get one for my new house.

Kundry · 18/02/2015 19:25

Always had one - cheap, no brainer to have, just like a smoke alarm.

Now have a woodburner - it's the law that one must be fitted with your woodburner.

Briefly didn't have one but only because I don't have gas!

patienceisvirtuous · 18/02/2015 19:27

Yes we do. Just moved. The flueless gas fire made me paranoid.

Sallystyle · 18/02/2015 19:29

I had one but lost it. Will now buy one.

charliebandana · 18/02/2015 19:32

We have one (20 pounds from Tesco) but haven't checked the battery for ages- thanks for the reminder OP, will do now.

HelenaDove · 18/02/2015 19:32

SomeSort its even more of an essential because of landlords like yours and/or ones who insist on using the cheapest option for gas safety checks or other works to do with the gas.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/02/2015 19:33

We have one on each floor, just replaced them as they were around 10 years old.

Even if you don't have gas, you need one if you have an open fire or wood burner, or if you are semi detached or terraced if your neighbours have them, it can seep through.

Pinkje · 18/02/2015 19:34

You've just reminded me to put mine on after our house move. Thank you.

charliebandana · 18/02/2015 19:35

It still works, and it woke the baby Smile

SaucyJack · 18/02/2015 19:36

No we don't. I assumed gas safety checks were enough tbh.

WhatismyLife · 18/02/2015 19:37

Never really thought about having one but i will buy one after reading this thread. Thank you op.

MissDuke · 18/02/2015 19:37

We don't. We don't have gas, just oil fired central heating and the boiler is in the garage which is separate to the house. Do we need one?
